Elder abuse is a malicious act prevalent in almost all over the world. In searching for solutions, many theories have been introduced and initiated. Despite numerous approaches and research carried out to find ways to prevent elder abuse case, only a few studies have examined the prevention of elder abuse from an Islamic perspective. The aims of this article are to discuss the status of the elderly and the concept of family life in Islam. The article further explores the concept of prevention of elder abuse in a domestic setting from an Islamic perspective. This article applies a qualitative approach. The verses from al-Quran and the Sunnah/ Hadith of the Prophet (PBUH) were gathered and analyzed using content analysis. Based on the analysis, this article found that Islam has laid down a very clear provision pertaining to managing the family relationship by prescribing every individual member in a family the specific rights and obligations. The strict obedience and adherence to these provisions can prevent the problem of abuse of elderly parents by family members.

This study was undertaken with the aim to validate the assumption in JEM’s Theory on Intergenerational Visits to the Elderly, which states that Intergenerational visits promote socialization, that spirals into family solidarity, quality time shared; that affords the elderly parents more meanings, purposes, significance in their lives, the feeling of successfully aging, and make family relationship tighter everytime it happens. It is also to come up with narrative materials from the experiences of the informant-elderly during intergenerational visits, together with children, grandchildren, friends and relatives, before, during, and after the visitation. The method used is narrative inquiry. Interview schedules were used both in Filipino and English. There were recorded interviews and later transcriptions of them, then a story was woven entitled: “The Elderly and Life’s Channels: The Threads of Life”. There were six parents interviewed equal to six families. The characters in the narrations are representatives from these families. Findings proved that, “intergenerational visits to the elderly”, is a key factor to improve the social relationship between children and parents and between and among parents and children. Other findings were on the smooth and rough (conflicts) events in the family, but the latter mended by the faithful observance of intergenerational visits, which serve as the knot that binds family members together, because the former promotes socialization. It is recommended that Intergenerational visits be included in the yearly activities for the elderly people or the senior citizens, by their respective family members, often or even far in-between.

This is a field research that analyzes the marriage suitability of elderly people in Socah, Bangkalan under the theory of maqasid shari'ah. The elderly marriage is officially conducted at KUA (Religious Affairs Office) of Socah for different reasons, namely: on the basis of coercion to the bride so that the family relationship does not break up, resulting in reluctance, on the basis of family compassion and encouragement. It is because the bride is an old maid and is his own niece on the basis of mutual love, avoid immorality and seek peace of life in old age. All couples can fulfill both material and non-material obligations, although not as perfect as a young couple. Some husbands do not want to have children for fear of not being able to support even though in this case the wife really wants it. Thus, the marriage of the elderly in Socah is sometimes appropriate and not in accordance with the maqasid shari'ah. The suitability in question is in terms of hifz al-din (protecting religion) and hifz al-mal (protecting wealth), while its inadequacies are in terms of hifz al-nasl (protecting offspring), because of their desires to have offspring and in terms of hifz al-nafs (protecting soul), and hifz al-'aql (protecting ratio), because of differences in descent have the negative effect on family disharmony that can interfere with the soul and mind. In this case, an intense dialogue and approach must be made to the couple to be more open and understand each other.

Children with thalassemia must undergo blood transfusions to sustain life and routinely done in periods of continuous lama.Pengobatan will have an impact on psychosocial problems in the family, especially in the elderly. Parents will face a backlash in any care and treatment such as guilt, anxiety, fear, sadness, economic problems and worry about not getting the proper care and treatment.This research is a quantitative descriptive research that aims to describe the level of anxiety of parents of children with thalassemia in Poly Children's Hospital. H. Abdul Manap Jambi City in 2015. The population in this study were all parents whose children suffer from thalassemia as many as 56 people with a total sample of 33 people. This research was conducted on the 26th of June to July 26, 2015 with interview techniques and questionnaires.  Results showed that of the 33 respondents, it is as much as 26 respondents (78.8%) had moderate anxiety level, as many as six respondents (18.2%) had mild anxiety level and 1 respondent (3%) had severe anxiety level. It is expected that nurses need to pay attention to and involve parents in performing nursing care in children with thalassemia, and improve the provision of information about the treatment of children to parents, so as to reduce anxiety.Keywords: Anxiety, Parents, Thalassemia

With the increasing number of elderly people, of course, there will be more and more complex problems that must be faced by these elderly people. Elderly people are no longer independent or dependent on others, unable to carry out activities on their own, need caregivers, have cognitive and functional decline, have complex psychosocial problems, and have multiple diseases. This study aims to provide an overview of the form of support and its impact on the health of the elderly by providing an overview through literature review research. Research data was obtained through literature study and hermeneutics. Family support can provide great hope for elderly people to continue to instill many positive things and reduce the negative possibilities experienced by them. Ways to provide support to the elderly can be: taking family members for walks, hanging out with friends, being with them throughout the day, and respecting one another. The benefits of providing the above are that there is an increasingly close family relationship, trusted by elderly parents, to be asked for any help, not awkward in expressing any opinion. This has an impact on the emotional stability of the elderly in living their lives.

Background and Purpose: Understanding factors which affect the level of family well-being is important as it contributes to effective decision making among the policymakers to improve the family lives as well as to strengthen the family institution. Accordingly, this line of research is gaining attention. This study develops an ordinal regression model which identifies demographic, economic and social factors that are significant in explaining the status of family well-being.    Methodology: Data involving 2,808 respondents from a nationwide survey conducted by the National Population and Family Development Board of Malaysia in 2011 were used in this study. Ordinal regression model was implemented to describe the three levels of family well-being.   Findings: The national survey reported that high level of family well-being was experienced by 76.3 per cent of the respondents, followed by moderate (18.4%) and low (5.3%). The fitted ordinal regression model found that ethnic background, family relationship, community relationship, health and safety levels, economic situation of the family, religious practice, housing, and environment are significantly related to family well-being. Meanwhile, it was found that the level of income is not a significant factor in determining the level of family well-being.     Contributions: There are a limited number of studies on the application of ordinal regression for modelling the level of family well-being, particularly with covariates involving the demographic and social characteristics of the respondents. Purpose In the present era of modernization, the social group members interact with each other with selfish and unselfish intents. However, the unselfish means and ends build a long term relationship among people. On the other hand, selfish ends bud out unethical means such as abuses, violence and fights. The situation becomes tough when the same becomes evident among the family relationship and as a consequence the elderly are being treated unfairly. Out of such cases, some are reported and the majority of them remain unreported, which eventually becomes the cause of concern for the social welfare agencies. Thus, this paper aims to examine the elder abuse (EA) tendency in metro, non-metro and religious cities. Design/methodology/approach For this study, a mixed-method approach is used to develop survey instruments, validate findings using qualitative and quantitative data sources for better generalization of results. The present study explored and confirmed the related factors using exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis for the establishment of a valid scale of EA. Further, the difference of perceptions among the elders for abuse across the metro, non-metro and religious cities was statistically checked using the ANOVA and post hoc techniques. Findings The present study identified the traces of EA and created a comprehensive understanding of it. The present study manifests the prevailing practices of EA in society by discussing the demerits of dependency and modernization. Moreover, the present study assesses the pervasiveness and the repercussion of dependency and the impact of modernization on EA followed by a discussion on how the victim elders may handle the situation. In the present study, a scale is developed to identify EA because of the dependency of the elderly and the modernization of society. Originality/value Some exclaiming thoughts such as the dependency of elders elevate the chances of EA on one side, while modernization of society hampers the social/family bonding leading to EA. The inconsistent development across the region has created modernization as a significant factor for EA. The level and depth of modernization across locations such as metro, non-metro and religious cities are the cause for varying degrees of EA. Based on the literature review, the present study has sensed the presence of EA in society at large by developing a scale for the aforesaid purpose.

The South African Government published the Older Persons Act no. 13 of 2006. The objectives of the Act are inter alia to maintain and promote the status, well-being, safety and security of older persons, to maintain and protect their rights and to combat abuse of older persons. This act is indispensable, as the elderly (people of 65 and older) form a growing segment of the South African population (4.767% in 1996 − 5.019% in 2011). They are in many regards extremely vulnerable, as they often face negative views regarding older people, experience discrimination, abuse, neglect and exploitation. Many atrocities are committed against them and one hears horror stories of older people who are abused and/or neglected by their own children and/or other people. One could almost say that these people, during their so-called ‘golden years’, are treated like ‘human waste’. I will investigate this phenomenon and attempt to interpret it within the South African context. I will then identify certain biblical guidelines to orientate one’s attitude towards old age and the elderly. To conclude, I will propose strategies to prevent elder abuse and restore human dignity to them.

Islam is a religion which has attempted to elevate the status of women so that there should be no discrimination between women and men from the Islamic perspective. However, in some fiqh texts, which are based on selected Qur'an and hadith, there is discrimination against women. On the other side, gender discourse now becomes an important issue and is used to improve the status of women. This article attempts to explore both the jiqh texts and gender discourse on the models of leadership in a family, especially on the role of women and men in the family and on the sexual relations, from the Islamic perspective.

In a society which recognizes the significance of children, giving birth to a child completes womanhood and the family. Thus, being a mother is synonymous with being a woman. The failure, then to become a mother, constitutes not fully achieving the status of a woman. Relatively, the desire for motherhood is inevitable and almost universal. This qualitative study analyzed the beliefs, and experiences of married women focused on their childlessness, health-seeking practices, and effects. Data were gathered through in-depth interview. Results showed that childlessness typified an unanticipated condition among the childless women. Regardless of the current age, age at marriage, marital duration, educational attainment and income, the respondents disclosed that childlessness is a condition which can be treated, provided the woman is still young. Childless women with higher income would likely seek medical help. Length of marriage disclosed to have affected the childless women’s recognition of their incapability to sire. Open communication coupled with trust, love, and understanding between couples would keep the marriage intact. Findings revealed that their self-esteem, marital relationship, relationship with relatives and friends were affected by the absence of children. Almost all of the respondents expressed that the communities they are into neither, in any way, bothered with their condition nor rejected them due to their childlessness.

The changes in the family as the social institution that are described as the second demographic transition revealed the reality of new social links, affected the selection of the strategies and methods of family establishment and led to the family de-institutionalization processes. The changes had also affected the status of formal and informal roles in the family. Those changes catalyzed the greater variety of families and households which can be illustrated by the spread of cohabitation and the increased numbers of children born outside the traditional marriage. The above changes demonstrate the conscious choices to family relationship building. Present research paper aims to find out how does the human happiness which is mostly described by a subjective well-being index depend on the family status.
