The integration of literature and literary works has always played an undeniable role in language education. Despite the existence of a wealth of literature in non-native English-speaking countries, in the majority of the coursebooks, the entire attention is devoted to literary works of the native English-speaking countries. In this study, five coursebooks claiming to be based on English as an international language (EIL) were randomly selected and analysed to investigate to what extent they have incorporated the literatures of native and non-native English-speaking countries. The criteria for the content analysis of the claimed EIL-based coursebooks were based on Kachru’s Tri-Partide Model to categorise the countries, and culture with a small c and Culture with a capital C dichotomy. Results indicated that although the chosen coursebook purports to be based on EIL, less or nearly no attention is given to the literary works of the non-native speakers of English.   Keywords: ELT coursebooks, English as an international language, Kachru’s Tri-Partide model, literature in English

The article talks about Habbacum (in Rus. — Avvakum) Petrov (1620–82), a prominent figure in the Russian Old Believers who opposed church reforms that were undertaken by Patriarch Nikon in the middle of the 17th century. They particularly opposed the introduction of the three fingers sign of the cross instead of the centuries-old two fingers sign and the editing of ancient liturgical books, using new printed Greek editions. The author traces the tragic fate of the rebellious archpriest, who was brutally persecuted by the authorities and finally burned alive by their order in a wooden log house. Considerable attention in the article is paid to the literary works of the sufferer, including his autobiography, the first in the history of Russian literature.

The objective of the article is to consider the travesty motif in the works by Lesia Ukrainka in comparison with the corresponding European tradition, to define the specificity of its transformation and functionality. The research analyzes typological convergences and differentiates travesty-related cliché plots inherent in the European culture in Lesia Ukrainka’s literary works, such as “Osinnia Kazka” (“The Autumn Fairy Tale”), “Kaminnyi Hospodar” (“The Stone Host”), “Lisova Pisnia” (“The Forest Song”), and “Vila-Posestra” (“Vila Sister”). It has been proved that the abovementioned motif in the writer’s works is significative and serves to convey the author’s message while its interpretation enables deeper understanding of the ideas implied: cross-dressing points out the changes that take place in the characters’ inner world, their symbolic death (rejection of their own Self) or rebirth. The female cross-dressing is connected with self-sacrifice for the man’s sake and spiritualizes the heroine whereas the male one indicates weakness and “submissiveness”. Keywords: motif, travesty, transformation, literary tradition.
