ABSTRACTObjective: to report early experiencesin teaching resulting from practical classes in the discipline Adult Health I, under the perspective of Mental Health. Method: this is an experience report of three students from the Graduate Program in Nursing of Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) on the participation in the practical classes in mental health, held on June 2009, in the 2nd male infirmary of Hospital Psiquiatrico Dr. João Machado (HJM), Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, with undergraduate students at the 5th semester of the Nursing course. Results: the practical course activities of each subgroup were carried out during four days, where the individuals identified some aspects of the psychiatry history and the psychiatric reform and became responsible for the nursing care of a patient. Conclusion: the wealth of experiences gained from the practice in mental health at this hospital is highlighted, both on the part of the undergraduate students and the graduate students. ABSTRACTComputation has become an increasingly important tool in materials science. Compared to experimental research, which requires facilities that are often beyond the financial capability of primarily-undergraduate institutions, computation provides a more affordable approach. In the Physics Department at Eastern Illinois University (EIU), students have opportunities to participate in computational materials research. In this paper, I will discuss our approach to involving undergraduate students in this area. Specifically, I will discuss (i) how to prepare undergraduate students for computational research, (ii) how to motivate and recruit students to participate in computational research, and (iii) how to select and design undergraduate projects in computational materials science. Suggestions on how similar approaches can be implemented at other institutions are also given.

The manual is intended for students of "Pharmacy", "Pharmaceutical Chemistry" specialties of YSU Institute of Pharmacy. It corresponds to the curriculum of the subject of armtechnology (factory) and is intended for the organization of laboratory work. The educational manual presents the general characteristics of galenic and new galenic medicines, modern methods of industrial production, at the end of each topic are test tasks and situational problems. It will contribute to the strengthening of students' theoretical knowledge and experimental skills on the topic of galenic and new galenic medicines.

For the development of laboratory experiments on the competitive interacitons between freshwater snail populations, special snail rooms were set up in the main building of the Research Center "Aggeu Magalhães". In the current paper, the first of a series on this subject, the general methodology of the laboratory work is described in detail. Using indoor cement channels in which a uniform seminatural environment was created, interactions of freshwater snail populations can be studied with minimal interference of the usual variables. Controlled indoor environmental techniques, as described in the current paper, may also be utilized in different types of experiments in malacology, and represent a substantial technical advance in malacological work.

This chapter explores the principles of experimental research design as well as the issues and problems associated with different aspects of the approach. In particular, it considers the issue of internal and external validity, the common obstacles associated with experimental research, and what can be done to try and avoid or minimize them. The chapter first describes the five steps involved in the classic version of the experimental design before discussing three types of experimental design: laboratory experiments, field experiments, and natural experiments. It also examines the ethical issues that arise from experimental research and concludes by highlighting some of the advantages of experimental research.

The present study investigated the relationship between the laboratory experience of learned helplessness and depressive responses on the Rorschach. 50 undergraduate students were randomly assigned to either a learned-helplessness or nonlearned-helplessness condition. After completion of the experimental conditions, subjects were administered Rorschachs which were scored utilizing the Exner Comprehensive System. Student's t tests indicated significantly higher scores on the sum of all responses involving the use of shading and achromatic features (right-side eb) for the learned-helplessness subjects. According to Rorschach theory, these results suggest that subjects in a learned-helplessness condition experience a more painful affective state and tend to withdraw from their environment more than subjects experiencing a nonlearned-helplessness condition. This can be seen as a defense against experiencing more stress. These conclusions are discussed in the context of learned helplessness and reactive depression.
