Background: Oral health, though an integral part of general health, is accorded low priority and remains an issue of neglect. Women during their reproductive years suffer from various oral problems that warrant timely utilization of care. Understanding factors affecting health-seeking behavior is necessary. The objective of this study was to determine the personal level and system-level factors that affect utilization of oral health care among 18-34 year-old women visiting a dental health care facility. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted among 18-34 year old women. Participants were recruited using convenience sampling from a tertiary dental health care facility. A Chi-square test was used to determine the association of sociodemographic variables on factors affecting the utilization of oral care. Results: A total of 194 responses were obtained. The mean age of study participants was 27.1±5.2 years. Around 62% of women suffered from multiple dental problems in the past year of which tooth decay and swelling of gums were most common. About 68% of them sought treatment with a dentist. Half of the respondents were themselves responsible for making health care decisions. 55% of the participants reported barriers in availing dental care. The cost of dental treatment, fear of pain, and lack of time were the most commonly reported barriers. Conclusions: Oral health-seeking behaviour among women was found to be good with regard to dental attendance. Personal level barriers were greater than system-level barriers in availing dental care.

Background: Infection control is an imperative issue in the dental practice. Almost all of the dental procedures involve dealing with the saliva, blood and oral fluids which may have sufficient pathogens and cause cross infection through contaminated instruments, materials and surfaces. Therefore the dental health care workers must be aware of the possible contamination and should follow the measures to prevent it. The aim of the study is to assess the knowledge of dental health care professionals regarding infection control and modes of infection control employed by them during one of the dental procedure i.e. impression making. Methods: A self-assessment questionnaire based survey was carried out among dental health care professionals to assess the knowledge and practice of infection control in dental clinics. Survey instruments containing 14 questions were randomly distributed to 113 dental health care professionals regarding knowledge of infection control methods and infection control practice during impression making in dental clinics and hospitals. Data was collected and analyzed. Results: Though most of the health care professionals (88.6 %) think an impression taken from patient mouth will have enough pathogens to cause cross infection, our study showed that only 52.3 % of them disinfect all the impression and washing impression under running water was the method used for disinfection by the majority (78.9 %). Conclusions: The knowledge about infection control during impression making is better among the dental health care professionals. But there is a need to improve the practice to minimize cross infection in dental set up and reduce the associated morbidity and mortality rates for both dental practitioners themselves and patients. ABSTRACTDental care unit waterlines (DCUWs) consist of complex networks of thin tubes that facilitate the formation of microbial biofilms. Due to the predilection toward a wet environment, strong adhesion, biofilm formation, and resistance to biocides,Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a major human opportunistic pathogen, is adapted to DCUW colonization. Other nonfermentative Gram-negative bacilli, such as members of the genusAchromobacter, are emerging pathogens found in water networks. We reported the 6.5-year dynamics of bacterial contamination of waterlines in a dental health care center with 61 dental care units (DCUs) connected to the same water supply system. The conditions allowed the selection and the emergence of clones ofAchromobactersp. andP. aeruginosacharacterized by multilocus sequence typing, multiplex repetitive elements-based PCR, and restriction fragment length polymorphism in pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, biofilm formation, and antimicrobial susceptibility. One clone ofP. aeruginosaand 2 clones ofAchromobactersp. colonized successively all of the DCUWs: the last colonization byP. aeruginosaST309 led to the closing of the dental care center. Successive dominance of species and clones was linked to biocide treatments.Achromobacterstrains were weak biofilm producers compared toP. aeruginosaST309, but the coculture ofP. aeruginosaandAchromobacterenhancedP. aeruginosaST309 biofilm formation. Intraclonal genomic microevolution was observed in the isolates ofP. aeruginosaST309 collected chronologically and inAchromobactersp. clone A. The contamination control was achieved by a complete reorganization of the dental health care center by removing the connecting tubes between DCUs.

This paper reports on the pattern of tooth loss in a random sample of 1131 adults aged from 15 to 65 years in a rural area of Kenya in which access to formal dental care is minimal. We found that the majority of the population retained most of their dentition in a functional state even up to the age of 65 years: In all age groups, more than 50% had at least 26 teeth present, and more than 90% had at least 16 teeth present. The prevalence of edentulousness was less than 0.3%. The principal cause of tooth loss in all age groups was caries, and this was true for all tooth-types except incisors, for which periodontal disease was the main cause of tooth loss. The cultural practice of removing lower central incisors was observed only in those over 40 years of age. More teeth were lost due to caries among women than among men, while the reverse was true for teeth lost due to periodontal diseases. In view of the fact that most people retain most of their teeth throughout life, it is suggested that the most appropriate strategies for dental health care in this population should be those promoting self care, rather than the introduction of a formal treatment-oriented approach provided by dentists.

Abstract. In modern conditions dental treatment is one of the most common types of medical care in Ukraine, only 7.00 % of the young population are dentally healthy. During 2015–2019 the general practice of using 3.91 % of the consolidated state budget for health care for dental care was determined, mainly such funds were used for the maintenance of dental health care establishments. Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine «Some issues of implementation of the program of state guarantees of medical care in 2020» from February 5, 2020 for № 65 provides the calculation of the tariff for dental services in the amount of UAH 9.19 per unit. Preliminary calculations indicate that comparing to 2019 during 2020 the state financial support of dental care will be reduced by 3444.20 million UAH (68.60 %). There are reasonable doubts about the rationality of the design of the Medical Guarantee Program in terms of treatment of dental diseases which carries the risk of further increase in dental morbidity and reduced availability of dental care for population. Key words: dentistry, treatment, financing, reform, accessibility, discussion.

Abstract Background Although receiving dental care is recommended for women during pregnancy, getting such care remains low. This study will identify the level of dental care received during pregnancy and factors associated with care for a group of pregnant women in Utah. Methods Analyses were based on 2793 pregnant women completing the 2014–2015 Utah PRAMS survey. Descriptive and bivariate techniques were used. Results Approximately 91.2% knew it was important to care for their teeth and gums during pregnancy, yet only 58.8% had their teeth cleaned during pregnancy. Those who knew such care was important were 1.4 (95% CI 1.1–2.0) times more likely to have their teeth cleaned during pregnancy. Although 18.8% needed to see a dentist for a problem, only 74.5% of them received treatment for the problem during pregnancy. Approximately 76.0% had dental insurance during pregnancy. Those with dental insurance were 1.9 (95% CI 1.5–2.4) times more likely to have their teeth cleaned and 1.6 (95% CI 1.2–2.2) times more likely to go to a dentist for needed treatment during pregnancy. Approximately 51.4% had a dental/health care worker talk with them about how to care for their teeth and gums. These women were more likely to know it was important to care for their teeth and gums during pregnancy (97.4% vs 87.6%, p < 0.0001). For women who received care for a problem during pregnancy, 70.0% had a dental/health care worker talk with them about how to care for their teeth and gums. These women were more likely to know it was important to care for their teeth and gums during pregnancy (95.2% vs 82.8%, p < 0.0001). Women who had their teeth cleaned the year prior to pregnancy were more likely to have their teeth cleaned during pregnancy (78.5% vs 21.5%, p < 0.0001). Conclusions A large proportion of women knowing of the importance of dental care during pregnancy did not receive care. Knowledge of its importance during pregnancy, having a dental/health care worker talk with them about how to care for their teeth and gums, and having dental insurance during pregnancy are positively associated with dental care during pregnancy.

Biomedical waste management is one of the emerging causes for Hospital Acquired Infection, which is very important to deal with due to its significant impact on the health and environment. Biomedical waste generated in dental clinics and hospitals if not managed properly, can create various health hazards to dental professionals, dental auxiliaries, patients and other dental health care service providers who work in dental office. Each dental health care provider should have knowledge about handling and disposal of biomedical waste. In this article different methods of handling and disposal of biomedical waste during the unprecedented times of COVID-19 are elaborated. Revised guidelines are provided by central pollution control board (Govt of India), American dental association, Centre for disease control, world health organization and other organizations dealing with waste management are discussed in this article.
