Salivary gland tumours account for 2-6.5% of all the neoplasms of the Head and Neck. Histopathology is most important in diagnosis of salivary gland tumors. AIMS and OBJECTIVES : To study age,sex and site distribution of various salivary gland lesions, to study the histomorphologic (gross &microscopic) aspect of these lesions to correlate clinical diagnosis with that of histopathologic features. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study is conducted in the RAINBOW CLINICAL LABORATORY AND RESEARCH CENTRE, SIDDIPET during the period of September2018 to September 2020. Formalin fixed ,paraffin embedded sections and stained with hematoxylin and eosin slides were studied. RESULTS: Total number of specimens were 54. Out of these 39 were neoplastic (benign 70%,malignant 30%) and 15 were non neoplastic. Among the benign tumors majority are pleomorphic adenoma.Among the malignant tumors, mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common. Among the non neoplastic lesions chronic sialadenitis is most common. CONCLUSION: Histopathological examination of salivary gland lesions stands out to be the most important method in establishing the final diagnosis. It helps in differentiating non neoplastic and neoplastic lesions.

ABSTRACT Background: Histopathology is the most important means in diagnosis of salivary gland lesions. The objective of this study is, to study occurrence of salivary lesions during a period of one year from January 2019 to December 2019, to study age, sex and site distribution of various salivary gland lesions, to study histo-morphological aspect of these lesions.Methods: Surgically resected salivary gland specimens received at Department of Pathology, Government Stanley Medical College, Chennai were subjected to histopathological examination. Specimens were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin, processed, embedded, sections cut and stained with hematoxylin and eosin stain.Results: There were a total of 30 salivary gland specimens. Out of thirty, 25 were neoplastic and 5 were non-neoplastic. Pleomorphic adenoma was the commonest of all benign tumors. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the most common malignant tumor. Among the 21 benign tumors, 16 cases of pleomorphic adenoma and a case each of myoepithelioma, benign metastasising pleomorphic adenoma, basal cell adenoma, warthins tumor and schwannoma were found. Among the 4 malignant tumors, 2 cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma, a case of carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma and a case of myoepithelial carcinoma were found. Among the 5 non neoplastic lesions a case each of chronic sialadenitis, Sjogren’s syndrome, inflammatory myofibroblastioc tumor, parotid abscess and lymphoepithelial cyst were found.Conclusions: The diagnosis of salivary gland lesions by histopathological examination is the most important method in diagnosis and differentiating benign and malignant lesions and to predict prognosis by typing, staging and grading of malignant neoplasms.

Objective: To describe the demographic and histological features of salivary gland pathologies at tertiary care hospital. Study Design: Retrospective Descriptive. Setting: Shalamar Institute of Health Sciences, Lahore. Period: February 2012 to February 2017. Material & Method: 17548 surgical specimens were received during this period. Among these, 50 cases were diagnosed as salivary gland disorders. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS version 22. Results: 50 cases were diagnosed as salivary gland disorders out of 17548 surgical resections. Salivary gland disorders were divided into non-neoplastic group (n= 15) and neoplastic group (n = 35), which was further divided into: (i) Benign tumors, (n= 26) and (ii) Malignant tumors, (n= 9). Conclusion: Salivary gland disorders are rare diseases to be encountered clinically. Chronic sialadenitis among non-neoplastic disorders, pleomorphic adenoma among benign tumor and mucoepidermoid carcinoma among malignant tumors were the commonest.

INTRODUCTION: With a probability of 50% malignancy, salivary gland tumors are not too commonly noticed in children and adolescents. Most of these have idiopathic etiology but a few pre-disposing factors have been reported in literature. We hereby report eighteen cases of paediatric salivary gland tumors in a study conducted from September 2013 to August 2018 at department of Oral and maxillofacial surgery at Tatyasaheb Kore Dental college and Research Centre, Kohlapur, Maharashtra, India..AIM & OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to inspect the distribution, clinical and histopathological features of salivary gland tumours in children and adolescents.MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 18 cases of salivary gland tumors encountered in paediatric age group were studied and explored for age, gender, site proneness and for histopathological nature.RESULTS: Female gender had a predominance over males. Parotid tumors were more common (77.78%) as compared to tumors of submandibular glands. Six cases were diagnosed with benign tumors (pleomorphic adenoma) and rest had malignant tumors (mucoepidermoid in nature). Majority of the cases did not report undergoing any prior treatment.CONCLUSION Present study revealed that salivary gland tumors in paediatric age group are quite rare with female gender being more prone. With majority of cases being mucoepidermoid in nature, parotid gland is most commonly affected.

Background: There is a wide spectrum of salivary gland lesions with morphological and clinical diversity which makes it a difficult task for histopathological interpretation. Tumours of salivary glands are uncommon accounting for 3-10% of the total tumors of head and neck region and less than one percent of all tumours. The aim of this study was to recognize various histomorphological patterns of salivary gland lesions, their frequency, age, gender and site wise distribution.Methods: This study was carried out from June 2015 to May 2018 in the department of Pathology, JLN Medical College and associated Group of Hospitals, Ajmer. Total 121 cases of salivary gland lesions were included. Specimens were processed and stained by Hematoxylin and Eosin stain followed by histopathological examination.Results: Out of total 121 cases, 43.8% were non-neoplastic and 56.2% were neoplastic. In non-neoplastic lesions predominant was chronic sialadenitis (50.9%) followed by mucocele (28.3%) which commonly seen in submandibular gland (47.17%). Among neoplastic cases, 79.4% were benign and 20.6% were malignant lesions. Neoplastic lesions commonly were seen in parotid (75%). Pleomorphic adenoma was the commonest benign tumour (81.4%). Mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the most common malignant salivary tumour. Benign tumours were common in third and fourth decades, whereas malignant tumours were more common in fifth and sixth decades. Male predominance was seen in overall salivary gland lesions.Conclusions: Histopathological examination is mandatory in the diagnosis of salivary gland lesions because of their wide spectrum of histomorphology.

Abstract Background Focal lesions of the kidney comprise a spectrum of entities that can be broadly classified as malignant tumors, benign tumors, and non-neoplastic lesions. Malignant tumors include renal cell carcinoma subtypes, urothelial carcinoma, lymphoma, post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease, metastases to the kidney, and rare malignant lesions. Benign tumors include angiomyolipoma (fat-rich and fat-poor) and oncocytoma. Non-neoplastic lesions include infective, inflammatory, and vascular entities. Anatomical variants can also mimic focal masses. Main body of the abstract A range of imaging modalities are available to facilitate characterization; ultrasound (US), contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and positron emission tomography (PET), each with their own strengths and limitations. Renal lesions are being detected with increasing frequency due to escalating imaging volumes. Accurate diagnosis is central to guiding clinical management and determining prognosis. Certain lesions require intervention, whereas others may be managed conservatively or deemed clinically insignificant. Challenging cases often benefit from a multimodality imaging approach combining the morphology, enhancement and metabolic features. Short conclusion Knowledge of the relevant clinical details and key imaging features is crucial for accurate characterization and differentiation of renal lesions.

Background: With increasing usage of endoscopic procedures, gastrointestinal polypoidal lesions are commonly encountered specimens. Histopathological examination is crucial as biological behavior is dependent on its pathological nature. Materials and Methods: A retrospective descriptive study performed in Pathology department, Om Hospital and Research Centre from January 2017 to June 2019. The study included lesions received as polyp or polypoidal lesions of gastrointestinal tract for histopathological examination. Data was analysed using SPSS version 17.0. Gender, number and site were analysed using Chi square test to evaluate its association with neoplastic nature. Correlation with age and size was tested with Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Results: Among 150 cases of gastrointestinal tract polypoidal lesions, 58% were seen in male and 42% in female. Hyperplastic polyp and conventional adenoma were the commonest non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions respectively. The age of patients ranged from 7 to 84 years with a mean age of 50 years. Rectosigmoid region was the commonest site. 134 patients had single and 16 had multiple polypoidal lesions. Most polypoidal lesion had size <1 cm. Gender, age, number and size showed no correlation with neoplastic nature. A significant association was found with site with notably higher number of neoplastic lesions in large intestine. Conclusion: A spectrum of histological types of polypoidal lesions were found in Gastrointestinal tract, most frequently in colorectal region. Hyperplastic polyp and adenomatous polyp were the commonest non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions respectively. A notably higher number of polypoidal lesions in the large intestine were found to be neoplastic in nature.

Background: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) has been used for diagnosis of salivary gland lesions for many years. Various studies in the existing literature have shown a wide range of sensitivity and diagnostic accuracy of cytologic diagnosis. FNAC is a safe, simple, cost effective, 1-4 accurate and minimal invasive procedure for the evaluation of salivary gland lesions. FNAC is not only useful in planning denitive preoperative 2,5-6 diagnosis but also can prevent unnecessary surgical intervention. Salivary gland swelling occur more commonly in 3rd decade of life with equal sex incidence. Parotid is one of the most commonly involved glands in the head & neck region swellings. FNAC appears to be highly sensitive for benign tumours and highly specic for malignant tumors and it should be the rst line of investigation in evaluating the salivary gland pathologies. 7 Early diagnosis and appropriate management carries good prognosis. Methods: Patients with suspected salivary gland enlargements, referred for FNAC, were included in this study. FNAC was performed by using the standard procedure. Cytologic diagnosis was compared with histopathologic diagnosis wherever it was available. Results: In the present study conducted in the department of pathology, Shyam Shah Medical College Rewa MP, over a period of 5 years, 152 Patients with suspected salivary gland enlargements were retrospectively appraised. The benign lesions of salivary gland were 133 (87.5%), out of which Pleomorphic adenoma was diagnosed in 75 (56.39%) cases, clinical correlation was found in 58 (77.33%) cases. 29 cases were subsequently correlated with histopathological examination 26 correctly correlated and the diagnostic accuracy of FNAC was found to be 89.65%. Inammatory lesions were proved correct in 08 out of 10 cases after histopathology. Therefore, accuracy of FNAC was 80.0%. Malignant lesions of salivary gland were found in 19 cases, out of which 15 (78.94%) cases correlated with clinical diagnosis. 13 cases were subjected to histopathology 10 correctly correlated and the diagnostic accuracy of FNAC was found to be 76.92%. Overall diagnostic accuracy of FNAC was 84.61%. Conclusion:In conclusions it can be established that FNAC is an efcient and accurate procedure with high sensitivity index, and its usefulness is enhanced due to it being a relatively easy procedure which can be carried out even on outdoor patients.

Schwannomas or neurilemmomas are the most common benign tumors of the neural sheaths of the peripheral nerves. Incidence of these tumors in the hand accounts to 0.8-2%. The majority of them appear as an isolated grown mass along the route of the nerves. Peripheral nerves benign tumors present many difficulties concerning the clinical diagnosis and only histopathological evidence provides the final diagnosis. In this case study, we present a 45 year old man with a grown asymptomatic mass on the volar surface of right hand (hypothenar) remained for two years and impinging the skin of the hand only the last months. Initial MRI results diagnosed the mass as gaglion cyst. Histopathological examination revealed a schwannoma. We present this case as a rare manifestation of a schwannoma in hypothenar area of the hand. A literature review of diagnoses and therapeutic management is also presented.

Background: Salivary gland tumors include a wide variety of benign and malignant tumors in the oral and maxillofacial region. Although these tumors are not common, they are not rare. The prevalence of these tumors varies with regard to age, gender, and their location in the body. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the frequency of benign and malignant salivary gland tumors in patients referred to three referral hospitals in Tehran, Iran. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study examined the demographic and pathologic records of the patients with salivary gland tumors submitted to the Department of Pathology of Amir Alam, Loghman Hakim, and Shohada Hospitals from 2005 to 2016. In this study, the histological variants of salivary gland tumors and clinical parameters such as age, gender, and the location of the tumor were examined. The clinical data were analyzed using SPSS software version 21. Results: Of 137632 patient records, 1180 cases were salivary gland tumors. Pleomorphic adenoma in 794 cases (67.3%) and adenoid cystic carcinoma in 109 cases (9.2%) were the most common tumors, respectively. Salivary gland tumors were more common in males, and the participants’ mean age was 42.86 ± 16.5 years. The most common site was parotid and minor salivary glands, with 937 (79.4%) and 137 (12%) cases, respectively. Conclusions: In this study, the most common benign tumor was pleomorphic adenoma in the parotid gland, and the most common malignant tumor was adenoid cystic carcinoma in the major salivary glands. Furthermore, benign tumors were more frequent than malignant tumors.

Abstract Objective.—CD34-positive dendritic interstitial cells may be associated with the regulation of tumor growth. This association has been studied in various human neoplasms, especially skin tumors. In this study, we evaluated the distribution of dendritic interstitial cells and myofibroblastic cells at the tumor periphery of various benign and malignant salivary gland neoplasms. Methods.—Forty-nine cases of salivary gland tumors were selected: 16 pleomorphic adenomas, 12 Warthin tumors, 8 polymorphous low-grade tumors, 5 adenoid cystic carcinomas, 6 acinic cell carcinomas, and 2 mucoepidermoid carcinomas. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed by using antibodies for CD34 (dendritic cells) and α-smooth muscle actin (myofibroblast) on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded archival tissue. Staining intensity was graded as marked (3+), moderate (2+), weak (1+), and absent (0). Results.—Staining intensity for CD34 was 3+ in 24 (86%) of 28 benign tumors (pleomorphic adenomas and Warthin tumors) and 6 (29%) of 21 malignant tumors (polymorphous low-grade tumors, acinic cell carcinomas, adenoid cystic carcinomas, and mucoepidermoid carcinomas) and 2+ in 4 (19%) of 21 malignant tumors. None of the benign tumors displayed 2+ staining with CD34. Three (11%) of 28 benign and 11 (52%) of 21 of malignant tumors failed to stain with CD34. α-Smooth muscle actin staining was 3+ in 10 (36%) of 28 benign tumors and 6 (29%) of 21 malignant tumors, and 2+ in 11 (39%) of 28 benign and 2 (9%) of 21 malignant tumors. Five (18%) of 28 benign and 11 (52%) of 21 malignant tumors failed to stain with α-smooth muscle actin. Conclusion.—We conclude that the dendritic interstitial cells and myofibroblastic cells may be associated with the regulation of tumor growth in salivary gland tumors.
