The effects of palm oil contaminant on the soaked California Bearing Ratio (CBR) of subgrade was investigated. The following objectives were set out in accordance with BS 1377: 1-8 (1990) and BS 1924 (1990); Particle Size Distribution, Atterberg Limits, Compaction and California Bearing Ratio for oil-palm contaminated and uncontaminated subgrade. Palm oil and four soil samples are used in this research work. The air-dried samples were contaminated with oil-palm at 0, 2,4, 6, 8 & 10% of the dry weight of the samples for 7 days thereafter air-dried for another 7 days. Laboratory experiments on the control (0%) and palm oil-contaminated subgrade samples were conducted after 24 hours of soaking the samples in accordance with BS 1924 (1990). It was found that the soaked CBR for the contaminated soil showed a lower values (17.45%, 24.80%, 49.50% and 21.50%) than the control CBR values (48.20%, 138.40%, 160.00 and 132.10%) for sample A, B, C and D respectively. It is therefore concluded that palm oil has a negative effect on the geotechnical properties and the mechanical strength of the soil hence it is not suitable in any Civil Engineering work.

This research work study the influence of cyclic wetting and drying on free swell potential of untreated and lime treated expansive clayey soils. Such a study is required to understand the behavior of these soils during wet-dry cycles. Two expansive soils (a polwhite bentonite and a kaolinite) with different plasticity indexes were used in this study. The soil samples were treated with different lime content in the order of (3, 5 and 7% by the dry weight of soil). The lime treated soil samples were cured at 20ºC for 28 and 180 days. The untreated and lime treated soil samples were subjected to four wet-dry cycles. Free swell potential and cracks propagation were studied during lime addition and wet-dry cycles. Results showed that, the free swell potential of untreated soil samples; in general; decreased with increasing wet-dry cycles, and all of the soil samples reached equilibrium after the second cycle. While the cracks propagation increased with these cycles, especially of bentonite soil samples. Larger cracks propagation has been observed in the bentonite soil samples. Lime addition enhanced the free swell potential values of  the two expansive soils and there was a drastic decrease in free swelling potential and cracks propagation of these soils. The beneficial effect of lime treatment to control the swelling values was partly lost by the first wet–dry cycles, and the free swell potential increased at the subsequent cycles.

Oil palm is one of the most important plantation crops in the plantation sector in Indonesia. Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq) is a vegetable oil-producing plant in the form of Crude Palm Oil (CPO). CPO productivity is very much determined by quality and productive seeds. Oil palm (Elaeis guineenses Jacq) is a vegetable oil-producing plant which produce Crude Palm Oil (CPO). This study aims to determine the response of oil palm seedling growth to the provision of solid food containers and phosphate fertilizers at various doses in the main nursery. This research was conducted at the Teaching and Research Farm, Faculty of Agriculture, Jambi University, Mendalo Indah, Jambi Luar Kota District, Muaro Jambi Regency. This research was conducted for 3 months from September to December 2019. Design of the experiment used a randomized block design (RBD) with one factor, the application of various solid decanter compositions consisting of 6 treatments levels : p0= fertilizer NPKMg 44g/polybag; p1=decanter solid 140 g + 13 g (TSP) / polybag; p2=decanter solid 240 g + 13 g (TSP) / polybag; p3 = decanter solid 340 g + 13 g (TSP)/polybag; p4 = decanter solid 440 g + 13 g (TSP)/polybag; and p5 = decanter solid 540 g + 13 g (TSP) / polybag. Variables observed were  plant height,  number of leaves, stem diameter, total leaf area, root dry weight, shoot dry weight, and root shoot ratio. The results showed that giving solid decanter at various doses was able to increase growth  in all observed variables and was able to sow seedling growth at recommended fertilization doses. The application of solid decanter 140 g + 13 g (TSP) is the best dose to increase the seed height variable and able to exceed the  seed height at the recommended dose of fertilizing oil palm seedlings in the main nursery.

The efforts to achieve optimal results in the development of oil palm cultivation one of which is the use of the planting medium. Palm oil seedlings require planting medium that has the chemical and physical properties are good. Media palm nurseries generally consist of topsoil are mixed with sand and organic matter which is expected to obtain a good medium fertility premises. Top soil needs more difficult, so we need to look for alternative media to growing media prenursery palm oil. This study used randomized complete design and experiment arranged in seven media with four replications. The applications method of media: 100 % topsoil (A), topsoil and salvinia compost (1:1) (B), topsoil and coir palm oil (1:1) (C), topsoil and salvinia compost (1:2) (D) , topsoil and coir palm oil (1:2) (E), coir palm oil and salvinia compost (1:2) (F) , topsoil , salvinia compost, and coir palm oil (1:1:1) (G). All data were analyzed for variance. Data analysis followed by separation of means using LSD test with significance level of 5%. The resulted showed that both time and applications method of topsoil have affect on growth component. The best application method was topsoil, salvinia compost, and coir palm oil increased dry weight and root dry weight. Keywords: Prenursey, topsoil , salvinia compost, coir palm oil

A reddish-brown laterite was treated with up to 14 % oil palm empty fruit bunch ash (EFBA) by dry weight of soil and compacted with the British Standard light, BSL (or Standard Proctor) compactive effort. Index, compaction, strength and durability tests as well as microanalysis of the natural and stabilized specimens were carried out. The index, compaction characteristics (maximum dry density, MDD and optimum moisture content, OMC) and strength properties (California bearing ratio, CBR and unconfined compressive strength, UCS) were improved with higher EFBA treatment. Peak un-soaked and soaked CBR values of 70.0 and 45.0 %, as well as peak UCS strengths of 253.0, 462.0 and 577 kN/m2 at 7, 14 and 28 days curing were recorded at 8 % EFBA content. Based on the CBR specification specified in the Nigerian General Specifications, the laterite optimally treated with 8 % EFBA compacted with the BSL compactive effort can be used as a fill material in the construction of low-volume traffic pavement. The benefit of the EFBA application is primarily the reduction of the adverse environmental impact of the oil palm empty fruit bunch waste.
