The present young generation in Indonesia recently use the nickname of the “now” generation, or the “now” era, which is somehow similar with the more popular term “digital natives” (Prensky, 2001). The term “now” refers to something which is totally different, and not connected to the past. When the “now” generation of students come to class, most of them do not bring any book nor any note, not even a pen! They just bring a sole but powerful device, the smartphone. In the classroom or anywhere they go, they are always busy with it. They usually do multitasking & parallel processes like chatting, texting, searching, while constantly bombarded with games, music, videos and social media. When they study or write a paper, all gadgets are turned on simultaneously: the computer to work on, stereos, television, and off-course the smartphone to keep getting connected. All the gadgets are in function at once.

Communication between employees play a crucial role in increasing the productivity in the workplace. Social media is an ideal tool that can be used to enhance the communication process between the employees. This tool can be used to retrieve an insurmountable amount of information. Nevertheless, the usage of social media has two different consequences known as the “dual effects”: productive behaviors (task-oriented and relationship-building) and unproductive behaviors (deviance) at work (Carlson D., Carlson J. & Harris, 2016). It is essential for organizations to understand what drives Millennial employees and what tools they prefer to utilize in the workplace. Understanding Millennials’ characteristics will enable the management team to lead them appropriately and thus elicit more productive outcomes. Millennials have certain characteristics that distinguish them from previous generations. They are known as “digital natives” as the idea of technology has been ingrained in their mind since birth. (Myers, Sundaram & Vodanovich, 2010). This generation expects an abundance of information, aims for the speed of communication and multi-tasking, and are willing to share their experiences with the world via social networks (Krishen et al, 2016). In this study, we will see how social media can have an impact on their psychological health.

The population was chosen because they want to know the differences in perceptions and motivations of digital generations from the perspective of the level of education and age, apart from the social aspects of each student in sharing information on social media.Findings: The results of this study found that the perception of MIP students' information sharing was higher than that of FISIPOL students, but on the contrary, the motivation to share information on FISIPOL students was higher than MIP students. The difference is based on the age difference of MIP students who are more mature than FISIPOL students so that their perceptions about sharing information are wiser, but the motivation of FISIPOL students is higher because sharing information is not only for formal matters but also for informal matters such as finding one's reputation and pursuing prizes. Conclusion: Digital natives' perception in sharing information on social media is sharing information because it is seen to be beneficial to other individuals, sharing information is fun and can invite others to jointly understand and discuss together the latest information. For digital natives motivation in sharing information on social media, intrinsically to meet self-satisfaction. Examples such as being able to add insight and can discuss with other individuals. Whereas extrinsically is the motivation to share information because it can help others, especially when the information they have is useful and worth sharing. In terms of information sharing activities themselves, the digital natives really understand and pay attention to the type of information and the quality of information that will be shared before they share it with a wide audience.

When it comes to Generation Z's participation in higher education, few topics receive as much attention as their use of social media. However, much of the focus rests on marketing to Generation Z through social media. The connectedness of Generation Z is accompanied with assumptions about their technological abilities. Although they are generally comfortable with technology, their tech acumen is likely limited. Members of Generation Z are often labeled as “digital natives,” a term that suggests that because of the omnipresence of technology in their lives from birth, that they are naturally skilled and competent with many, if not all, forms of technology. The purpose of this chapter is to offer strategies for higher education professionals in connecting with members of Generation Z through social media.
