Use of Recycled Objects as English Teaching Media for Young Learners

This study is a library study about the use of recycled object as teaching media. The use of teaching media is one of the supporting components in teaching. Especially for young learners, the choice of media is an important thing to support them in learning English. Several media can be selected by teachers to be given to young learners. One of them is disposable media in the form of recycled objects that use objects around us. The teacher must be able to create the media to make the learning process more fun and informative. Through recycled objects as teaching media, young learners can learn how to use objects around them without having to use expensive media for learning. Therefore, this article was aimed at sharing the use of recycled objects as English teaching media for young learners. So that, young learners are expected to be motivated in the learning process.

ABSTRAKBahasa Inggris merupakan bahasa pengantar yang digunakan untuk berkomunikasi diseluruh dunia. Pembelajaran bahasa Inggris untuk pemula (beginners) adalah hal yang harus dilakukan sehingga bisa dijadikan bekal untuk anak dimasa depan. Tujuan dari kegiatan pendampingan ini adalah untuk memperkenalkan bahasa Inggris sejak dini kepada anak-anak serta mampu meningkatkan motivasi serta rasa percaya diri anak-anak dalam menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Salah satu aktivitas yang dilakukan adalah kegiatan Fun with English yang merupakan a recommended activity to motivate kids in learning English dengan menerapkan metode pembelajaran yang beragam sehingga anak-anak tidak merasa jenuh bahkan bosan dalam proses belajar seperti ceramah, Think Pair Share, games serta lagu-lagu berbahasa Inggris. Dari kegiatan ini anak-anak SEKAMI menjadi merasa percaya diri, pembelajaran yang diberikanpun sangat disenangi oleh anak-anak. Saran bagi pemerhati bahasa Inggris adalah untuk lebih meningkatkan kreativitas melalui berbagai macam cara untuk membumikan bahasa Inggris di bumi nusantara. Kata kunci: fun with English; SEKAMI. ABSTRACTEnglish language is a medium language which used to communicate in all over the world. English learning for the beginners is the important thing that have to do so that it can be supplied for their future. The aim of this activity was to introduce English as early as possible to children and could enhance their motivation and their confidence in using English. One of the activity is Fun with English activity that is a recommended activity to motivate children in learning English by implementing various learning methods in order that the children will never get bored and saturated during learning process. These activities such as lectures, Think Pair Share, games and also English songs. From this activity, the children of SEKAMI become have their self confidence, they felt happy with the materials are given by their teacher. The process of learning English in SMP N 2 Penebel class VII C showed that students experienced obstacles in speaking. It could be seen from result of observation, interview and pre-test. It was 2.70 which is categorized below the passing grade minimum criteria: 3.0. Researcher indicated that it was because they seemed to be having lack of motivation in the English learning process. The use of interactive video in learning is necessary in order to improve students' motivation in speaking. Action research design was accommodated to help their problems. The researcher offered three kinds of tests. The result of pre-test was 2.70. After pre-test, the researcher went into cycle 1 which succeeded in improving their speaking from 2.70 to 2.96. In cycle 2, there was improvement up to 3.31. The use of interactive video gave positive responses to the students. As the result, their speaking could be improved.

To some, learning English appears to be complicated. In the academic contexts, students still get difficulties in learning English. Teachers as educatorsshould be creative in choosing the best method to teach the language. Learning strategies that are less fun or arguably boring do not improve students’ English skills, instead will only make students feel bored and lazy to learn. The most important thing is that students enjoy every learning process as something fun. It can help the students feel comfortable during the learning process. Fun learning activities will have an impact on improving students’ English abilities naturally. It helps students to reduce pressure during learning. Therefore, the ways of learning must be designed and adapted to the needs of students. This paper is non-research based. It means that the paper is about author’s perspective of how to learn English in fun ways. This article enlists several fun ways in learning English. Reading Comprehension is the ability to read text, process it and understand the meaning. It relies on two, interconnected abilities: Word reading be able to decode the symbols on the page and language comprehension being able to understand the meaning of words and sentences . In fact, students generally feel bored and unmotivated in learning English especially in reading skill because English is different from Indonesian so that the students have difficulty in understanding reading English text. They do not know the meaning of some words in the text. Therefore, the teacher’s role becomes important in the teaching and learning process especially in teaching reading. Therefore, appropriate media should be chosen to motivate their students not only to read the text but also comprehend what they read. One of the media that can be used and applied by the teacher is Composite Pictures. A Composite Picture is a large single picture which shows a scene in which a number of people can be seen doing several things. Thus, to know whether or not there was a significant effect of using Composite Pictures on reading comprehension achievement; Composite Pictures was used as media in teaching reading in this research.

This research aims to describe the implementation of English Zone (EZo) activities in learning English speaking skills for young learners. Employing qualitative descriptive study, this research included observation of teaching and learning process, and interview that was administered to 10 students from Kampung Sawah, West Hadimulyo. Ten meetings were observed thoroughly. Each observation took place in English language classroom every Sunday at Al-Fatimah Mosque. This research presented the implementation of English Zone (EZo) to young learners and students’ responses to the implementation of EZo. The findings illuminated the powerful ways in which EZo was able to improve students’ speaking skill. The students were having fun in the classroom which made them actively participate IN speaking practice with their friends or teachers. The findings further highlighted that EZo showed a good result in improving students’ confidence during their speaking practice. EZo helped them to speak more and decreased hesitation. They felt more relaxed to speak.Keywords : English zone, speaking skill, young learners, activity

Flash cardboard is one of the media used for speaking, especially in storytelling. Teaching by using media is very necessary for learning because it greatly influences the results of the learning process. This research wants to know English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ perception after they learned storytelling using flash cardboard as a media. This was phenomenological research. This research used semi-structured interviews with some students who used flash cardboard in learning storytelling. Purposive sampling was used in this research. The result shows that the student got positive impacts facilitated by the flash cardboard media, they became more confident in speaking in front of the class, they were not involved because flash cardboard helped them, students also supported speaking fluently, they can produce more than 190 words per minute (wpm) but not necessarily perfect command of intonation, vocabulary, and grammar. By using flash cardboard as the media, the media can be an alternative method in learning English specifically speaking class because it forces students to speak (really make them speak) following the target language. In the end, it can also be concluded that learning English using flash cardboard media can improve students' language skills and speaking skills. The students maintain their ability in speaking smoothly not necessarily perfect command of intonation, vocabulary, and of course the grammar. The recommendation for further study is the other researchers can add the respondents with another English skill.

This research aimed to describe the evaluation of ELLIS (English Language Learning and Instruction System) Program in English teaching and learning process in SMP Bopkri 3 Yogyakarta in terms of the context, input, process, and product aspects.This research is an evaluation research employing CIPP model by Stufflebeam (2010). The data were collected through observation, open questionnaires, and interviews and were analyzed using Miles, Huberman and Saldana’s flow model of qualitative data research which included data collection, data condensation, data display and conclusion drawing.The findings revealed that the evaluation of ELLIS Program in English teaching and learning process in SMP Bopkri 3 Yogyakarta related to the process of context was in line with the objective of the program that is improving the students’ English skills and the program can support the English teaching-learning process. In term of input, the program is appropriate according to the required standard for good teaching learning English, this program is supported by the school’s entire component, the facilities of the teaching-learning process is completed, the material in ELLIS program can apply consecutively to be able to improve students’ English skill. On the process of teaching and learning has appropriated, the schedules of ELLIS program is held correctly and on time, every meeting the teacher always use ELLIS, the procedures and activities ELLIS program are implemented correctly, the students always participate actively during the learning process, the students more interested in learning English. Dealing with product the students more understand, easier in catching the material and more comfortable in taking part of the learning process, they feel happy and feel that their ability in learning English increase, the students’ English skill can improve successfully, the students can communicate with the teacher and their other friends in English correctly, the aim of this program can hold successfully. Between 250-300 words; must focus on: aims of the study, methods, findings, conclusions, and implications.

Motivation is one of the most significant things in learning process. Without motivation, the purposes of learning is tough to be achieved. When learners have it in learning process, they will more understand with the materials, especially English. The goal of this study is to know how students’ motivation in learning English of eight grade at MTs Mathla’ul Anwar Sukaguna. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data was carried out by using a questionnaire of students’ motivation which have ten items adapted from Clement, Dornyei, & Noels (1994) and used an interview which have five questions‎. The data were processed in the percentage and descriptive explanation. The main findings described that the learners are entirety highly motivated. Based on this study’s findings, students of eighth grade at MTs Mathla’ul Anwar have that motivation, it is based on the outcome of questionnaire and interview. From the output of questionnaire, most of students choose the agree statements. It means that students has an savor in learning English. Furthermore, the yield of interview expressed that students have highly interesting in learning English. But in this case, the teacher have to be more creative in using the media, strategy, or delivered material in teaching learning activity to improve students’ motivation.

Media in learning process is very intact because it will be supported from  the learning to be more easily exposed. Many experts say that with the media, it can help teachers and students in the learning process to be able and achieve the goals of the learning process. This research aimed it introducing and describing how the  preparation and utilization of the flash cards media are used by teachers in teaching English to young learners. This research was conducted at SDN Baros Mandiri 2 Cimahi. The method used in this research is the descriptive research in accordance with the case study that occurred. The source of the data was the English teacher and the subjects were the second grade students of SDN Baros Mandiri 2 Cimahi. Observation, interviews and documentation are the data collection techniques used in this research. The findings reveal that teachers use flash card media according to the material to be delivered to young learners. Based on the results of the research the flash card media can help facilitate teachers in the delivery of learning material, students are also more enthusiastic, excited and very happy to learn English and very influential in the teaching and learning process.  Keywords:  instructional media, utilization of instructional media, flash Card

The success of the teaching-learning process is not only supported by the students but also by the teacher as central learning. In this case, students and teachers have an equally important role. The students will be enthusiastic in learning when they have good teachers in transfer information, material, and knowledge. Teaching English as a foreign language to adult students is not essay job to do. It needs kinds of strategies in teaching and method to transform knowledge into them. It is because English is difficult and not an essay to be learned for them. English language as a foreign language has so many challenges to be faced when learned it. Many factors showed that English is difficult to be learned by students at a higher level such as they are lack vocabulary, confusing to express their ideas, lazy to practice English, bored in teaching strategy, or media that lecture used. In this situation, the lecture should choose appropriate media, strategy, or method when teaching. And one of the media can be used is comic. Comics are a series of pictures that contain images and balloons to write a story. This research showed that learning by implementing comics was so significant to improve students’ willingness in learning vocabulary. It prof by the increasing mark of students in English objects, the present list was always full and the atmosphere of the classroom is so lively. The class was always happy, enthusiastic, and comfortable to follow the lesson.
