Arbutus pavarii Pamp. (Ericaceae) is one of the endemic species in Libya. Samples of the non-ripened and ripened fruits of Arbutus pavarii Pamp. were collected from its natural habitat (El-Gabel El-Akhdar, Libya).Fruit characters like fruit size, weight, fruit mass and seeds per fruit were estimated. The vitamin content of A, C and E was estimated using different methods. The total phenolic and flavonoids content of the fruits was determined spectrophotometrically. The antioxidant activity was assessed using a modified quantitative (DPPH) assay at two maturation stages of fruits (green and red). The results were discussed according to the nutritional value of the fruits. KEY WORDS: Arbutus pavarii; antioxidant activity; DPPH; phenolics and flavonoids.

This study is a contribution to valorise date palm sap (Phoenix dactylifera L.) by elaboration of high quality syrup. Sap was concentrated by evaporation and the obtained product was characterized by its physicochemical, rheological, thermal, sensory properties and by its antioxidant activity. Syrups from date palm sap have a good nutritional value marked by high amounts of sugars (58—75 g/100 g fresh matter basis), minerals (2.1—2.6 g/100 g fresh matter basis) and phenolics (147.61—224.55 mg of ferulic acid equivalents/kg fresh weight). Syrup also presents an antioxidant activity that appears related to total phenolic content. Rheological properties indicate that syrup preserves a Newtonian behavior from 10 °C to 55 °C well modeled by Arrhenius equation. Hedonic evaluation showed that consumers’ appreciation of date palm syrup was not significantly different to the most known sap syrup: maple syrup.

Background:  Wheatgrass (Triticum aestivum L.) is worldwide consumed and has been used for health benefit or functional or nutraceutical food while ricegrass (Oryza sativa L.) is still not well documented, which is also in the grass family (Poaceae) as wheatgrass and it is also produced with aged around 8-10 d which similar to wheatgrass production. Moreover, priming is a process for enhancing seed vigour properties and improving bioactive compounds. Utilization of fish protein hydrolysate (FPH) for liquid fertilizer is more interesting in order to increasing of nutritional value and bioactive compounds as well as antioxidant activity of many plants.Objective: To investigate the nutritional value and bioactivity of ricegrass as affected of priming process with fish protein hydrolysate.Methods: The Chainat 1 rice seeds were soaked with FPH at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 ppm at a ratio of rice seed to FPH as 1:5 and grown for 7 d, thereafter, the ricegrass were determined seed vigour properties, nutritional value and bioactive compounds such as chlorophyll, carotenoids, total phenolic and phytic acid. The ricegrass was extracted with water at a ratio 1:2 (ricegrass : water), then homogenized and centrifuged at 10000xg for 20 min. The thereafter, the supernatant was brought to freeze dry. The freeze-dried powder was dissolved in distilled water and brought to measure total phenolic content by Folin-Ciocalteu method. Antioxidant activities were determined by 3 assays as ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl radical (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid radical (ABTS) methodsResults: The results showed that FPH at 10 ppm significantly improved (p<0.05) seed vigour properties including germination percentage, germination rate, height and fresh weight and nutritional values such as ash, protein, fat and carbohydrate. In addition, bioactive compounds including chlorophyll a and b, total chlorophyll and carotenoid content in ricegrass primed with 10 ppm FPH were higher than control. Phytic acid content in ricegrass primed with FPH at 5 and 10 ppm but not 15 and 20 ppm was lower than control. The ricegrass primed with FPH at 10 ppm yielded highest total phenolic content. Though, ABTS activity was not highest in rice primed with FPH at 10 ppm, DPPH and FRAP assays were highest.Conclusion: The ricegrass primed with FPH was significant improved seed vigour properties, nutritional value, bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity. The appropriate of FPH priming for ricegrass was 10 ppm because it could improve seed vigour, nutritional value and bioactive compounds including chlorophyll, carotenoid, total phenolic content and antioxidant activity determined as FRAP, DPPH and ABTS and reduce the anti-nutrient compounds as phytic acid.Keywords: Ricegrass, Fish protein hydrolysate, Nutritional value, Bioactive compound, Antioxidant

The present study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidant activity of and the content of bioactive compounds in camu-camu fruits harvested at different maturation stages and stored. The fruits were harvested in the municipality of Cantá, Roraima State, Brazil. The experimental design was completely randomized, with three replications, in a factorial arrangement consisting of three different maturation stages (immature, semi-mature and mature) and eight days of storage (3 x 8). The fruits were analysed every day regarding total vitamin C, carotenoids, anthocyanins, flavonoids, total phenolic compounds, and antioxidant activity (FRAP and DPPH). According to the results obtained, the interaction of maturation stages x eight days of storage had a significant effect according to the F test at 5% probability. The highest antioxidant activity (FRAP) was observed in the fruits harvested in the semi-mature stage, providing a longer shelf life. The carotenoid pigment, flavonoid, anthocyanin, and vitamin C contents were higher in the fruits harvested in the mature stage, and this stage was the most suitable for obtaining these functional biocompounds. Additionally, in mature fruits, the highest mean content of total phenolics and antioxidant activity (DPPH) were observed during storage. It was concluded that the mature stage is the most recommended for the extraction of pigments and antioxidant biocompounds from camu-camu fruits.

Edible parts of two dates cultivars (Deguel ahmar and Tanslit) at four maturation stages khellal, besser, rutab and tamr were analyzed for their phytochemical composition (total phenolic, total flavonoid and condensed tannins contents) as well as antioxidant and antibacterial activities. The antioxidant activity evaluated in vitro using scavenging assays of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and 2,2′-azino-bis(3- ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical and ferric reducing power. Antibacterial activity of extracts were evaluated in vitro by the agar disk diffusion method against five pathogenic bacterias trains: Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633, Enterococcus ATCC 3315, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 43300, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 7320. Results suggested that the content of these phytochemicals are very important at khellal stage and then decreased during maturation followed by a decrease in the antioxidant activity.

Potatoes contain antioxidants such as flavonoids, carotenoids and ascorbic acid. High level consumption worldwide makes potato a valuable source of phytonutrients. Developing new potato varieties with high nutritional value in combination with resistance to pathogens is an important task. In this study, 25 interspecific potato hybrids with resistance to Synchytrium endobioticum, common scab, silver scab, rhizoctonia, nematodes and PVY were evaluated for total phenolics, total flavonoids, total carotenoids, ascorbic acid contents and antioxidant activity. The identification of the dominant allele related with yellow flesh color at the Chy locus was also performed by the specific CAPS marker. Total protein content was detected and ranged from 8.19 ± 0.59 to 30.17 ± 4.56 mg/g dry weight (DW). Total starch and total carbohydrate contents were in the range of 9.0–21.0% and 73.21 ± 20.94–676.36 ± 195.28, respectively. Total phenolic content of hybrids varied from 8.45 to 82.75 mg/100 g, and total flavonoids content—from 0.64 to 9.67 mg/100 g DW. It is possible to distinguish samples with high protein and carbohydrate contents, high level of substances with antioxidant activity and characterized by resistance to pathogens. Quality evaluation has shown that some of the samples have a high potential for processing and chip production in combination with high eating qualities. These samples can be used in breeding programs to develope varieties resistant to pathogens and with high nutritional value.

Prunus domestica L. is a member of the Rosaceae family that shows many biological activities including antioxidant, antimicrobial, antihaemolytic, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective activity and many other activities. In the current study, we evaluated nutritive value, phytochemical screening, total phenolic content and antioxidant activity by DPPH and FRAP method for the different extracts obtained by successive soxhlet extraction using the different solvents based on their polarity. Results show that it is a good source of energy. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of many secondary metabolites which include alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycosides, protein, steroids and terpenoids, fixed oils and fat as well as phenolic compounds. The highest total phenolic content was found in the ethyl acetate fraction. Highest antioxidant activity by DPPH method is reported in ethyl acetate fraction (IC50 =1837.399±0.377µg/ml) while the ferric reducing antioxidant power was maximum for diethyl ether (56.032±0.985µM/ml FRAP value = 0.325±0.002).

This research was carried out to see the effects of organic farming and determine the yield and some pomological characteristics of apricots in Isparta, Turkey. Isparta province which is located in the west Mediterranean part of Turkey has also gained importance in terms of especially organic apricot production. Two apricot varieties (Hasanbey, Alyanak) were grown with organic farming practices in this study. These two varieties are table types apricot varieties commonly grown in Turkey&rsquo;s one of the world's major producers. In this research, pomological characteristics as fruit size (fruit height, fruit width, fruit weight, fruit length), fruit firmness, pH, total soluble solid (TSS) content, titrable acidity (TA) and yield values were determined. Total phenolic and antioxidant activity were also determined. Hasanbey cultivar had higher yield value (66.21 kg/tree) than Alyanak (45.71 kg/tree) cultivar. At the same time the total phenolic content of Hasanbey (307.12 mg GAE/100g) variety was determined higher than Alyanak (175.91 mg GAE/100g). Antioxidant activity of Alyanak and Hasanbey were determined as 32.86 mg/ml IC50 and 17.37 mg/ml IC50 respectively. In terms of observed characteristics, Hasanbey cultivar was found to be prominent in Isparta. It can also been recommended for other places similar to Isparta ecological conditions (highland climate).
