This research aims to analyze the linguistic compression in the film Saving Private Ryan in the Indonesian subtitle on the speech acts. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The source of data is the conversation among characters in the film Saving Private Ryan. Meanwhile, data of this research are the utterances or sentences in the subtitle of the movie which involve two different languages; English (Source Language) and Indonesian (Target Language). The finding shows that there are 22 data of illocutionary speech acts which are translated by using linguistic compression technique and categorized into three types of illocutionary acts. The quality of the subtitles translated by that technique is very good because it translated accurately, the meaning or intention in words can be accurately delivered into the target language.

This study aims to find the translation techniques used by the translator in translating sentences of the bilingual destination map. The researchers used descriptive qualitative method to describe the translation techniques applied in the bilingual destination map “Peta Wisata Jawa Tengah” which is translated into “Central Java Tourist Map”. This study starts by finding the problem, collecting data, classifying data, analyzing data, and drawing the conclusion. The mostly used in translation techniques is literal translation technique to make the translation work clear for the tourists domestic even international. This technique is used when the target language (TL) is applied through the sentence without observing the differences of context or meaning in the source language (SL), whereas the discursive creation and description are rarely used.

<p class="05IsiAbstrak">The aims of the article are to find out: 1) kinds of illocutionary acts which are produced by the main characters in “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” movie, and 2) the most dominant illocutionary acts.  In analyzing the data, the authors used descriptive qualitative method.  The object of this study was main character’s dialogue of “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” movie.  The authors did these following steps: watched the movie, found the transcript, identified the dialogues of main character, classified them using Searle’s theory, and interpreted the meaning of utterances.  Here are 52 utterances with illocutionary acts. The results were: 1) Representative (assertive) (65%), 2) Directive (19%), 3) Expressive (8%), 4) Commissive (6%), and 5) Declarative (2%) in scale of 100%. Representative (assertive) was the most dominant. This study can be a reference for learning pragmatics, especially illocutionary acts. The teachers can also use movie as speech acts teaching media.</p>

This research deals with the types of illocutionary acts in Donald Trump’s Inaugural Speech. The research concerns with illocutionary act produced by Donald Trumps as a President of American. The aim of this research was to analyze the types of illocutionary speech act which was dominantly used in that speech. This research applied descriptive qualitative method and speech act theory by Yule. There were 63 utterances and the percentage of utterances were Representative 46%, Expressive 11%, Directive 16%, Commissive 12,7%, and Declarative 14,3%. The result showed that Donald Trump assert to the audience about the nation will be.It is found that Trump’s speech acts in his speech are intended as statement of fact and assertion. Disscussion of hopes implied in Trump’s speech acts. As seen on the table above, it can be seen that Trump hoped that his audiences would be persuaded to act

The study entitled “Direct and Indirect Directive Illocutionary Acts in the Movie Penguin of Madagascar” is aimed at identifying the direct and indirect directive types of illocutionary acts and explaining and analyzing the meaning of the utterances interpreted by the listeners. The data of this study were taken from the movie entitled Penguins of Madagascar, and it was chosen because of many utterances identified as directive of illocutionary acts. The observation and documentation methods were used in collecting the data since the data were obtained from the spoken source in the movie. The data were analyzed using the descriptive qualitative method since the purpose of this study is to analyze the social phenomena like speech acts. The first theory proposef by Bach and Harnish (1979: 47) is used to analyze the type of directive of illocutionary acts. The second theory, the context of situation proposed by Dell Hymes (1972, is used to analyze the meaning of directive of illocutionary acts that can be interpreted by the listeners. There are six types of directive of illocutionary act proposed by Bach and Harnish (1979). They are requestives, questions, requirements, permissives, prohibitives and advisories. In this study, several types of directive illocutionary were found in the movie, except the indirect question, and direct prohibitive. The way the listeners interpret the meaning depends on the context of situation.

Speech acts are pragmatic elements that involve speaker and hearers in every conversation in which it has an illocutionary act. The purpose of the research was to find out the types and functions of illocutionary acts. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The data analyzed used the theory of Searle. The source of data is utterance of the main character in Fear of Rain movie. In this research, there are 355 data which contain types of illocutionary acts, such as assertive with 189 data (53%) which consist of 7 functions (stating, informing, asserting, complaining, predicting, convincing, agreeing). Directives with 117 data (33%) consisted of 7 functions (asking, commanding, requesting, advising, warning, suggesting, inviting). Commissive with 19 data (5%) which consist of 3 functions (promising, refusing, and offering). Expressive with 30 data (9%) consisted of 6 functions (thanking, apologizing, praising, greeting, blaming, and expressing anger). The most frequently type of illocutionary act is assertive because the utterance of the main character is believed to be true based on the fact

Abstract. This research is entitled “Subtitling Strategies of Po’s Utterances in Kung Fu Panda Movie”. The aim of this research is to find out the subtitling strategies of Po’s Utterances in Kung Fu Panda Movie. This research used descriptive qualitative method to describe then analyze the subtitling strategies of Po’s utterances in Kung Fu Panda movie. The steps of analyzing data are: collecting the data, identifying the data, classifying the data, analyzing the data, and the last step is drawing the conclusion. Transfer strategy has the most frequency in Po’s utterances in Kung Fu Panda movie, the percentage reaching 53,91% over half of Po’s utterances. Transfer strategy is translated more easily because this strategy translating the source language completely and accurately into the target language. So it is easy to make the audience understand from the source language to the target language with the original meaning from this movie. Meanwhile, transcription has the least frequency in Po’s utterances, the percentage is 2,90%. Transcription strategy is found rarely because this strategy is used to translate a language when there exist unusual term in the source language (SL), like nonsense language and third language. So it is difficult to find out transcription strategy in Kung Fu Panda movie.Keywords: Subtitling Strategies, Transcription, Transfer, UtterancesAbstrak.  Penelitian ini berjudul “Strategi Penerjemahan pada Ujaran Po sebagai tokoh utama di Film “Kung Fu Panda” dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui strategi penerjemahan ujaran Po di film Kung Fu Panda. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif untuk menjelaskan dan menganalisis strategi penerjemahan ujaran Po di film “Kung Fu Panda”. Tahapan-tahapan analisis adalah : mengumpulkan data,  mengidentifikasi data,  mengelompokkan data, menganalisis data, dan tahap terakhir adalah mengambil kesimpulan. Strategi transfer memiliki frekuensi paling tinggi dalam ujaran Po di film Kung Fu Panda, dengan persentase mencapai 53,91% lebih dari setengah ujaran Po. Strategi transfer merupakan strategi yang lebih mudah digunakan karena strategi ini menerjemahkan bahasa sumber secara lengkap dan akurat ke dalam bahasa sasaran. Jadi lebih mudah untuk membuat penonton mengerti bahasa sumber ke bahasa target melalui makna asli dari film tersebut. Sementara, transkripsi memiliki frekuensi terendah dalam ujaran Po, persentasenya 2,90%. Strategi transkripsi jarang ditemukan karena strategi ini digunakan untuk menerjemahkan bahasa ketika ada istilah yang tidak biasa dalam bahasa sumber (BS), seperti kata-kata yang tidak bermakna atau bahasa lain. Dengan demikian strategi transkripsi tidak banyak ditemukan dalam film “Kung Fu Panda” ini.Kata kunci: strategi penerjemahan, transkripsi, transfer, ujaran

Purpose of the study: This research aims at describing patterns of Arabic verbal sentences and translating them into Indonesian, in addition to describing transposition and modification in the process of translation. Methodology: The data of the research were taken from a book entitled "Qabas min Al-Akhlaqan Nabawiyeh" by Ahmed Fakir and were translated into Indonesian. The descriptive qualitative method was used in analyzing the data. The researchers extracted Arabic verbal sentences and translated them into the Indonesian language then analyzed them syntactically according to structures of the Indonesian language and finally summarized the results. No statistical tool is used in the analysis. Main Findings: The findings of the study highlight that there are five patterns of the verbal sentence. Patterns of translated sentences might differ from those of verbal ones in the source language, due to differences between the two languages regarding features and structure. Pattern transposition might occur when translating Arabic verbal sentence into Indonesian. As for meaning modification, it is divided into four parts: transposition, addition, deletion, and a combination of addition and modification.  Applications of this study: The findings which will benefit learners of the two languages as it discussed the translation patterns and issues in translation between Arabic and Indonesian language in depth. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study advanced the current knowledge by highlighting that several processes such as transposition and modification while translating Arabic texts into Indonesian because the nature of the two languages is different. Arabic is derivative, but Indonesian is agglutinative. Also, the moral terminology in the source language needs an exact equivalence in the target language to give the same meaning.

Acceptability of the translation is one of criteria in determining the quality of translation. The objective of this research is to describe the range of acceptability between the source and target language in the novel of Vivaldi’s Virgin written by Barbara Quick as well as to identify the translation procedure used by the translator. This research is translation study with descriptive qualitative method. While the data of research is sentences taken from both the source text and the target text containing word, phrase and sentence. From the assessment, it can be concluded that translator is capable enough to translate the sentences from the source text into the target text. A translation can be understood as a transfer of massage from one language to another. Translation is an attempt to convert from one form to another to retransmit messages from the source text to the target text. Finding of this study shows that 164 data taken randomly 110 (67%) are acceptable, 33 (20%) less acceptable, and 21 (13 %) unacceptable.

Sarcasm has become an uncommon way to treat other’s faces in communication. However, the study of sarcasm has not yet been investigated thoroughly in the case of such daily illocutionary acts of the conversations. One of the sarcasm phenomena is mostly seen in the comedy situation of The Big Bang Theory. This research aims at analyzing mock politeness or sarcasm in the utterances of each character. The analysis focuses on describing the use of mock politeness in pragmatics context. The data was obtained from informal speech acts’ situations. The research carries out the descriptive qualitative method. The data was analyzed by using politeness strategy in examining the functions of mock politeness. The results show that sarcasm caused by the violation of pragmatic aspects in The Big Bang Theory releases in several types of utterances, they are: declarative, representative, and expressive. The function of sarcasm in this comedy situation mostly to create humors which are divided into several functions such as humor as a means of social critics, humor to satirize, and humor to mock.

AbstractThis reseach aims to know how many shift technique and literal methode used in translating childrens’ billingual story book, entititled: Munch!Munch!Munch! publisher Erlangga Kids. To analyze this research, the reseacher used a descriptive qualitative method. Using documents as the data, it taken from the book entittled Munch!, Munch!, Munch! Consists of 28 sentences, then each sentence analyzed using shift technique and literal methode. The results are found 19 shift and 12 literal. Based on the results above, it shows that the translator has tried to translate this book seriously. It means she/he tried getting meaning of source language readable and natural. Unfortunately, the translator is still inconsistent in choosing meaning of target language. E.g there are some plural words but only a few of plural that translated in plural too. There is the singular word but transaltor translate it to plural. In my opinion, the writer who involve the translator (only has english knowlede does not has transaltion knowldge) should learn translation materials. It will help her/him to make good translating. It means the translator will find the meaning in source language more readable, natural and accurate.  Keywords: Billingual story; Children’s book; Literal; Shift; Translation.
