scholarly journals Relation between functional mobility and muscle strength of the elderly in a public physical activities program

Objective: to verify the relationship between functional mobility and muscle strength in a group of elderly people participating in a public program of physical activities, called “Programa Mexa-se”, in the Joinville/SC city. Methods: This was a quantitative, correlational descriptive study, carried out in a non-probabilistic, intentional type. Included a random sample of 42 elderly people (27 women and 15 men), aged between 60 and 75 years, to whom two balance tests were applied: the Sit and Stand Test (TSL) and the Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT). The elderly also answered a questionnaire about sociodemographic factors, health and physical activity. Results: Statistically significant (p<0.05) relationships were found for TUGT, evidencing that there is astatistically significant correlation between TUGT and TSL (p <0.022). Regarding the values obtained for TSL with TVM, it also observeda significant correlation (p <0.000), as well as toTUGT and TVM (p <0.003). Conclusion: This study showeda correlation between the functional mobility of the elderly through TSL and TVM tests result. Alsodemonstrated that the group participating in the program had positive resultsregarding the level of physical activity practiced. This results indicates the importance of optimization in the prevention and rehabilitation programs for the elderly, to maintain the functional mobility of elderly community members and reduce the body mass index.

The study was conducted on 1,210 elderly people (aged 60 and older) with the purpose of understanding physical activity and cognitive impairment among elderly people in some districts of Ha Nam province in 2018. The results showed that the percentage of elderly people with symptoms of cognitive impairment was high, accounting for 46.36%. There was a significant difference between the rate of cognitive impairment of the group who exercised frequently (41.92%) and that of the group who did not exercise (51.62%) (p<0.05). Compared to the Non-exercise group, the risks of cognitive impairment of group exercise 15 - 45 minutes/week (OR = 0.69; 95% CI: 0.51 - 0.93); group exercise 45 - 90 minute/week group (OR = 0.61; 95% CI: 0.44 - 0.84) and group exercise Over 90 minutes/week (OR = 0.43; 95% CI: 0.27 - 0.67) were all significantly lower. The more time the research subjects exercise, the lower their risk of developing cognitive impairment became. Our finding suggests that physical activities may delay or prevent the onset of cognitive impairment in elderly people. It is necessary to expand research, continue to apply the cognitive screening test based on international standards, while guiding and encouraging elderly people to carry out physical activities according to their capabilities and international recommendations.

Physical activity is one of the most important element of a healthy lifestyle and determinant of the physical and mental health. According to the WHO, limited physical activity is the fourth most common premature deaths risk factor in the world. Regular sport and active recreation is very important for our health. Physical exercise is the most effective method used by physiotherapists to prevent and slow down the aging process of the body, and consequently, diseases of elderly, such as: osteoporosis, injuries caused by falls, diabetes or hypertension. Physical activity has a positive effect on the quality of life and cognitive functions of elderly. People over 65 years constitute about 40-50% of people who require specialist medical care in the world. Therefore, health and medical professionals dealing with preventive healthcare and treatment of elderly people should have basic knowledge in geriatric rehabilitation, as well as to be able to plan suitable physiotherapy program adequate to the needs of older people. To assess the functional status of the patient, as well as the effectiveness of the training, various types of functional tests are used, specially designed for the elderly. These tests are based on the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (COG) considering the state of health, physical and mental fitness as well as socio-environmental conditions. The physiotherapeutic program should be based on functional training involving the entire human body, i.e. nervous, muscular, skeletal, sensory and balance systems.

Background: Aging being a natural physiological process can present both physical and psychic changes, due to the conditions of life of the person, and can be influencers for the installation of chronic non-communicable diseases, which may predispose this subject to an episode of fall. Objectives: To compare the propensity to fall in the elderly male and female, practitioners and non-practitioners of physical activities. Methods: The sample consisted of 120 elderly people of both genders practitioners and non-practitioners of physical activity and were used the “Timed Up and Go” and “Functional Reach” tests. Results: Among non-practitioners of physical activity, significant differences were observed between the values of functionality, being that the male group presented higher values than the female group, i.e., men move more, therefore has the lowest risk of fall. Conclusion: It was concluded that the female practitioners of physical activity have a greater risk of suffering an episode of fall compared to the non-practitioners, and in relation to the men practitioners and non-practitioners of physical activity there was no significant difference, showing that the elderly women have a higher risk to fall compared to the elderly men.

Introduction: Low levels of physical activity and functional mobility lead to greater difficulty in performing activities of daily living and are directly proportional to mortality in the elderly. Thus, there are the need to create mechanisms linked to the maintenance of the functional capacity, which assure the elderly autonomy and self-confidence. Objective: To verify the level of physical activity and functional mobility in the elderly and if this functional mobility suffers interference of the age group and physical activity. Methods: The study involved the elderly aged 60 and over, living in Senhor do Bonfim (BA), in the northeastern region of Brazil, from February to July 2015. The evaluation of the subjects occurred in a single session, with physical and general clinical evaluation, as well as the collection of sociodemographic, anthropometric and self-reported morbidities through the application of questionnaires. It was also carried out the Timed Up and Go test (TUG) to verify the levels of functional mobility and level of physical activity with application of the International Questionnaire of Physical Activity (IPAQ) adapted for the elderly. Results: In this study, 127 patients were studied, predominantly female (87%) and mean age of 68 ± 7 years, and the majority of the elderly corresponded to the age group of 60 to 69 years. The elderly belonging to the group considered inactive (IPAQ up to 150 min/weekly) presented the execution time of TUG higher than the elderly in the group considered active (IPAQ > 150 min/weekly), with averaging time for carrying out the test of 10.5±2 minutes and 8.9±2 minutes respectively, with a statistically significant difference of p<0.01. And the execution time of TUG increased proportionally to the increase of the age group. Conclusion: Elderly with lower level of physical activity and belonging to the higher age groups present a higher risk of falls. Strategies should be developed to stimulate increased physical activity level and functional mobility of this population, especially among the older ones, reducing the incidence of falls and providing greater autonomy.

The proportion of elderly people is growing worldwide and, with this, there is an increase of chronic-degenerative conditions such as impaired balance and falls. The physically active elderly tends to an improved response in muscle strength, flexibility and postural balance. The present study aimed to evaluate and compare the grip strength and mobility of elderly people with different levels of physical activity. The sample consisted of 44 elderly with 60 years or more, both sexes, divided in: 18 elderly practicing volleyball adapted (AVG), 13 elderly practicing some physical activity (AG) and 13 sedentary elderly (SG). Grip strength was assessed by a hydraulic dynamometer and mobility through the test "Timed Up and Go" (TUG). Data were evaluated using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, to check normality. The comparison of the results of the three groups was performed by ANOVA with Tukey post-test, with p<0.05. The results showed that grip strength (p=0.008) and mobility (p=0.003) were better to AVG when compared to the other groups. It is suggested that the sports practice implement the gains in functional mobility and strength when compared to purely non-specific exercise and inactivity.

Abstract Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: None. Background The quarantine during COVID-19 pandemic affects the clinical visits of elderly people. Since, telehealth gained importance, it is essential to adapt routine visits to the tele-assessment for elderly people especially in high risk factor for both functional impairment and fall risks. Our aim was to present our online assessment experiences in the elderly who underwent particular home quarantine during COVID-19 pandemics. Method: Thirty-three participants aged 65-85 (mean = 71.33 ± 5.35/years, 20 women, 13 men) those never attended an online assessment before were invited to a video-conference based assessment session. It was advised that a relative of the participant or caregiver must attend the online assessment session and follow the instructions of the physiotherapist. The assessments were conducted in the following sequence over seven main topics that are important in terms of functionality in the elderly: (1) physical activity were questioned using International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form, (2) the functional performance were tested with 30 seconds Sit-to-Stand test (SST), (3) participation to the daily living activities with KATZ Index, (4) coronavirus anxiety with Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS), (5) fear of falling with Falls Efficacy Scale, (6) the balance and mobility with Timed-Up and Go test (TUG) in a 3-meter corridor, and (7) frailty with Clinical Frailty Scale. The assessments were done by six physiotherapists (one PhD, 2 MSc, and 3 BSc). The opinions of the participants and physiotherapists regarding their experiences were noted. Result: All participants were finished the assessment and not reported adverse events. The mean of all outcomes showed in Table 1. The mean assessment time was 23.26 ±6.89 minutes. The bad internet connection reported in only one session. Seven of the participants (21.2%) mentioned that SST or TUG were somewhat effortful despite their short duration. The physiotherapists also reported that ensuring an appropriate testing environment for the sit to stand test and Timed-Up and Go test were not always possible. In addition, the sit-to stand test Two of the participants (6 %) were felt discomfort from the questions of CAS. Twenty-one (63.6 %) online assessment were rated as "good" while 12 (36.4 %) were rated as "fair" by the relative of the participant or caregiver in terms of preparing the tools (chair etc.) and testing environment. No problem reported by both therapists and participants related to the questions of IPAQ-SF, CFS, KATZ or FES. Conclusion: This study indicated that an online tele-assessment session is safe and applicable in elderly who underwent home quarantine during COVID-19 pandemic. It was observed that an application of survey based assessments were easier than functional assessments. The results of this study offer an exemplary tele-assessment session for elderly people. Future studies may focus the consistency of the tele-assessment and clinic based assessment results.

Abstract Introduction: Health problems may negatively affect the psychological and physical aspects of life, influencing the quality of life of older adults. The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of physical activity on quality of life, anxiety, and depression in the elderly population. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study of 200 elderly people of both genders. Subjects were divided into two groups: one with 100 senior citizens engaged in physical activities in a social center for the elderly; and another composed of 100 subjects who lived in the community but were not engaged in physical activities. The instruments used to assess physical activities, quality of life, and anxiety and depression were, respectively: the modified Baecke questionnaire; the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36); and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The data were analyzed using the Student's t test, Pearson's r, and analysis of variance (ANOVA), with odds ratio and a 5% significance level (p<0.05). Results: We observed that the active group showed higher scores of physical activity and quality of life. Conversely, the sedentary group revealed higher scores of anxiety and depression. Data assessment revealed a strong correlation between the domains quality of life, level of vitality, and mental health (r=0.77). The prevalence ratio showed that physical activity is a protective factor against anxiety and depression in the elderly. Conclusion: The findings suggest a correlation between low levels of physical activity and symptoms of anxiety and depression in the elderly living in the community.

Background and Objective: Physical performance in older men has been reported in analyses with veterans and in disease-based cohort research. Studies examining gait performance among older monks, however, are narrow. The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of a recent fall on gait ability in a cohort of Benedictine and Trappist monks in 4 US monastic communities. The second aim was to analyze physical activity and a recent fall as predictive markers of 2 constructs of gait performance. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 53 Benedictine and Trappist monks over 60 ( x = 74.7 ± 7.6; range: 61-94 years) completed a basic sociodemographic and fall history profile, the Timed Up and Go (TUG) Test, Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) and the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE). Results: Demographic profiles revealed that 10% of participants had fallen over the past 3 months; in addition, those who had fallen were more likely to limit activities because of fear of falling ( P = .005). Monks who had fallen over the past 3 months demonstrated significantly poorer TUG (12.6 ± 2.1 vs 10.5 ± 1.8; P = .01) and DGI (17.2 ± 5.3 vs 22.3 ± 2.3; P < .001) scores. There was a significant association between physical activity and both the TUG (–0.55; P < .001) and DGI (64; P < .001). Multiple regression models demonstrated that physical activity and a fall in the past 3 months predicted 24% of the variance in the TUG ( P < .001) and 46% of the variance in the DGI ( P < .001). Conclusions: Gait performance is linked to a recent fall episode among older monks. Predictive determinants of functional mobility (TUG) and superimposing tasks on the gait cycle (DGI) include recent fall history and physical activity. Appropriate health promotion activities can be aligned with these lifestyle attributes in monastic communities.

AbstractBackgroundThe progression of hyperkyphosis is a significant factor in declining general health. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether muscle strength and/or mobility is associated with the progression of hyperkyphosis in elderly people.MethodsAs part of a cohort study of community-dwelling elderly people, handgrip strength and mobility (evaluated with the Timed Up and Go Test: TUG) were assessed at baseline (2005–2006). Kyphosis was also evaluated at baseline and in follow-up examinations 4 years later, with the block method. To exclude the measurement error, the progression of kyphosis was defined as increase of 2 or more blocks. The association of kyphosis progression in each group with handgrip strength and/or mobility was assessed using Poisson regression analysis.ResultsResults on 403 participants were available for the final analysis, and kyphosis progression was observed in 53 (13.1%) of them. Multivariable analysis adjusted for sex, age, baseline block number, bone stiffness, TUG performance, or handgrip strength simultaneously revealed that low handgrip strength (<26 kg in men, <18 kg in women) and low mobility (>13.5 seconds) at baseline were both independently associated with kyphosis progression (adjusted risk ratio [95% confidence interval]: 2.11 [1.06–4.20] and 2.48 [1.26–4.89], respectively).ConclusionsOur study showed that low handgrip strength and low mobility are clearly associated with the progression of kyphosis. Further study is needed on the applicability of these results to preventive measures.

Introduction. Physical activity is known to be an important factor influencing health throughout human life. This issue has become crucial for public health due to the aging of the population in both developed and developing countries. Aim. is to present a literature review on the forms of physical activity undertaken by the elderly, as well as on issues related to physical activity and the population aging. Material and methods. The study was prepared on the basis of a review of Polish and foreign literature. The following databases and data sources were used: EBSCO, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar. An additional source of data were the websites of the Central Statistical Office. Strictly defined key phrases were used during the collection of literature. The work has been divided into thematic subsections on the aging of the society, the impact of physical activity on health and the main topic, i.e. forms of physical activity selected by the elderly. Analysis of the literature. The number of elderly people in Polish society has increased by almost 3.7 million over three decades. Therefore, an important topic is prophylaxis aimed at increasing the number of days in good health, largely covering the broadly understood activation of the elderly. The available data indicate that only 12% of elderly people undertake physical activity once a week. The most common form of spending free time actively is walking (as many as 73% of people in this population declare this form of physical activity in one of the presented studies). Conclusion. Organized forms of physical activity are undertaken much less frequently by the analyzed age group mainly due to financial limitations and limited availability of sports infrastructure.
