To facilitate the learning objectives of ecology, biodiversity and environment course, in situ activities remain the finest key to complement by conducting real fieldwork and hands on study. The specific objectives of the study are to promote sustainable learning, adopting effective practice in academic and scientific documentation, and implementing holistic and blended learning approach in the course by introducing a comprehensive learning experience in biodiversity-related discipline. Therefore, Basidiomycota and Ascomycota study based on diversity, host association and community structure in Gunung Gading National Park was chosen and resulted with the following attributes, where, four different species of macrofungi were identified and classified including Ganoderma, Coprinellus and Cookeina. Information on Basidiomycota and Ascomycota diversity species present in the parks is useful for educational and research purposes such as in Malaysian fungal diversity, climate change marker and Malaysian fungal monograph, developing a conservation education and attitude towards scientific reporting and also helps in promoting ecotourism.

Laboratory training is the cornerstone of science education in higher education. However, in several cases hands-on experimental procedures are not possible, and therefore technology provide alternative educational methods. One of the rapidly evolving technologies, namely Virtual Reality (VR) can offer multiple benefits in laboratory training through the development of simulations and virtual laboratories that support, facilitate, and promote an effective their learning experience. We present an empirical research carried out at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the Democritus University of Thrace during the winter semester of the academic year 2020-2021. 51 undergraduate students carried out a Virtual Reality activity aiming to train them to the use of a Class II Biosafety Cabinet (BSC) in an immersive virtual environment. Our results show that VR approach was highly and enthusiastically accepted by the students; they reported that they had an authentic learning experience which enabled them to better achieve the learning objectives. However, in some cases symptoms like dizziness and blurry image were reported most likely due to equipment, showing that improvement of the equipment used in VR is needed. <p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/edu_01/747/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>

A comprehensive learning experience in biodiversity-related discipline is the only practical way to introduce students into the world of flora. Thus, this study was carried out at Kubah National Park as the park is known for its flora and fauna diversity to investigate plant species which are of timber-related importance. The study identified and documented seven different plant families with 12 species of timber-related usage at Kubah National Park.

Way Kambas National Park (WKNP) is home of five protected big mammals including sumatran elephants.  It shares its border with 22 of 37 villages surrounding the national park.  Understanding their existence in the wild is a priority, and  wildlife genetics is a crucially needed. Besides poaching and habitat fragmentation, wildlife-human conflict is one big issue.  Elephant Training Center (ETC) in WKNP is built for semi in-situ conservation effort on captive sumatran elephants that mainly have conflict histories with local people.  Participative observation and bio-molecular analysis were conducted to learn the importance of captive Sumatran elephant for conservation effort.  Through captive sumatran elephants, database and applicable methods are expected to be developed supporting the conservation of their population in the wild.  Participative observation and molecular identification was carried on captive sumatran elephants in ETC, WKNP under multiple year Terapan grant of Ministry of Research and Technology Higher Education, Indonesia. Gene sequence and cytological analyses showed that the captive sumatran elephants are closely related and tend to be domesticated.  Translocation among ETC to avoid inbreeding, and maintaining the captive sumatran elephant as natural as possible are highly recommended. Developing genetic database can be a reference for both captive and wild sumatran elephants.

This study explored the technology learning model of the elderly in a senior learning center under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many senior learning centers were closed during the pandemic, and many of them adopted the mode of online education. However, problems such as decreased motivation and a lack of peer interaction still exist. To solve these problems, this study used the easy-to-implement calligraphy AR approach and E-book approach to conduct a quasi-experiment on the elderly of a calligraphy course offered by a senior learning center. The results show a higher learning motivation among the elderly who use calligraphy AR. The learning effectiveness and technology acceptance of the elderly in the E-book learning group were higher than those in the calligraphy AR group. The elderly mentioned that the E-book learning approach is more user-friendly. In general, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the suspension of classes in senior centers, education through the development of technology has stimulated the growth of education in advanced learning centers. Through this kind of scientific and technological learning method, it will bring a whole new experience to the elderly. It can improve the stress relief methods, mental health, and quality of life of the elderly during the COVID-19 emergency shutdown, and provide a novel calligraphy technique learning experience for the elderly. Therefore, we believe that the calligraphy AR learning approach and the calligraphy E-book learning approach are practical and may promote quality of life and mental health of the elderly during the emergency closures due to COVID-19, providing elderly attendees with a novel calligraphy technology learning experience.

BackgroundSimulation is reported as an appropriate replacement for a significant number of clinical hours in pregraduate programmes. To increase access for learners, educators have looked to understanding and improving learning in observer roles. Studies report equivalent learning outcomes and less stress in observer roles. However, reports on the prevalence, use and perceived value of observer roles from the educator’s perspective are lacking.MethodsAn exploratory survey for Australian and New Zealand (ANZ) simulation educators based on literature findings was developed and piloted with a small sample (n=10) of like subjects for language, clarity, skip logic and completion time. The final survey comprised 36 questions. Quantitative data were analysed using Pearson’s chi-squared test, Welch’s ANOVA and exploratory factor analysis. Select qualitative data were analysed using content analysis and summarised with frequency counts and categorisation.ResultsTwo hundred and sixty-seven surveys were completed, with 221 meeting criteria for analysis. The observer role is widely used in ANZ and most learners experience both hands-on and observer roles. The location of observers is dependent upon several factors including facility design, learner immersion, scenario design and observer involvement. Verbal briefings and/or other guides are provided to 89% of observers to direct their focus and 98% participate in the debrief. Educators value observer roles but tend to believe the best learning is hands-on.ConclusionsThe learning in observer roles is less valued by educators than hands-on roles. Focused observation provides opportunities for noticing and attributing meaning, an essential skill for clinical practice. Learning spaces require consideration of scenario design and learning objectives. Scenario design should include objectives for observer roles and incorporate the observer into all phases of simulation. Attention to these areas will help promote the value of the different type of learning available in observer roles.

ABSTRACTThermoproteales(phylumCrenarchaeota) populations are abundant in high-temperature (>70°C) environments of Yellowstone National Park (YNP) and are important in mediating the biogeochemical cycles of sulfur, arsenic, and carbon. The objectives of this study were to determine the specific physiological attributes of the isolatePyrobaculum yellowstonensisstrain WP30, which was obtained from an elemental sulfur sediment (Joseph's Coat Hot Spring [JCHS], 80°C, pH 6.1, 135 μM As) and relate this organism to geochemical processes occurringin situ. Strain WP30 is a chemoorganoheterotroph and requires elemental sulfur and/or arsenate as an electron acceptor. Growth in the presence of elemental sulfur and arsenate resulted in the formation of thioarsenates and polysulfides. The complete genome of this organism was sequenced (1.99 Mb, 58% G+C content), revealing numerous metabolic pathways for the degradation of carbohydrates, amino acids, and lipids. Multiple dimethyl sulfoxide-molybdopterin (DMSO-MPT) oxidoreductase genes, which are implicated in the reduction of sulfur and arsenic, were identified. Pathways for thede novosynthesis of nearly all required cofactors and metabolites were identified. The comparative genomics ofP. yellowstonensisand the assembled metagenome sequence from JCHS showed that this organism is highly related (∼95% average nucleotide sequence identity) toin situpopulations. The physiological attributes and metabolic capabilities ofP. yellowstonensisprovide an important foundation for developing an understanding of the distribution and function of these populations in YNP.

Organizations such as the AASCB and the Pathways Commission (2012) recommend that emerging technologies be included in the accounting curriculum.  Yet the inclusion of emerging technologies represents a challenge for accounting educators due to the complexity and uncertainty associated with many technologies, as well as the rapid pace of technology change and innovation.  This paper answers the call by the Pathway Commission (2012) for additional research focused on enhancing learning experiences to better reflect current and emerging technologies. Using an experiential learning approach (Butler, Church, and Spencer (2019), we create a hands-on, learning activity focused on blockchains in order for accounting students to gain a conceptual understanding of blockchains and its applications and implications beyond bitcoins.

History has proven the development of Jawi calligraphy is in line with the development of Islam in the archipelago. It is the root of the nation’s identity that must be defended and maintained. As with other subjects, the challenge to learning Jawi calligraphy at this time is that the whole world including Malaysia is affected by the COVID 19 pandemic. Therefore, all learning activities are now geared towards teaching and learning from home (PdPR) as methods to ensure the continuity of education. Therefore, it is very important that Jawi calligraphy is given a new breath in teaching and learning. This research article will discuss the mobile learning approach (M-Learning) for Jawi calligraphy. Important elements discussed include the application development process according to the needs of teaching and learning activities. The features of the application that contribute to the improvement of students’ learning experience as well as the results of tests performed on students are also stated. The success of this M-Learning application for learning Jawi calligraphy will certainly be able to be further expanded to the learning of other subjects in various fields.
