This article is the fourth in a series of articles devoted to the amendment of the IMO stability code in terms of pitching limitations. It considers approaches to weather restrictions based on the conditions arising during pitching for ships of various types and proposes criteria for assessing these phenomena on irregular waves of different intensities. Based on the performed systematic calculations of pitching on irregular waves, the dependences of the probability of flooding on the speed and intensity of waves for transport vessels were obtained. The formulas obtained make it possible to estimate the indicated seaworthiness indicator. At the same time, the goal is to expand the regulatory framework for the justified assignment of operational restrictions on the weather and the area of navigation of ships while improving the Rules of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping on the basis of a general approach to the regulation of seaworthiness, consistent with the methodology for developing a new International Convention on Load Mark 2000. The proposed approach to the determination of additional seaworthiness criteria for assessing the operational limitations of ships by weather based on seaworthiness conditions can be used in practice to improve the regulatory requirements of the Register.

Maritime Autonomous Surface Ship (MASS) has been developed recently, and demonstration projects have been carried out internationally. Considering the full autonomous level is unlikely to be addressed shortly, remote control centre and Remote Operator (RO) will play a vital role in the MASS system. Although competence of watchkeeping at the ship’s bridge is inevitable for RO to avoid ship accidents caused by human errors, international requirements have not been introduced yet. This paper presents a way to develop the regulatory framework on the competence of RO based on the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) by exploring the concept of Situation Awareness (SA). Goal-Based Gap Analysis (GBGA) is constructed based on the human-behaviour model and the required information for SA. A case study through the mini focus group discussion with interviews by a total of three (3) veteran instructors of training ships is conducted utilising the information including the results of previous demonstration projects on the remote control. The results show the relationship between required information and ship sense, shortage of these factors when RO is operating, additional competence and possible regulatory requirements for RO. The findings support the usefulness of GBGA and pave the way to develop a regulatory framework for RO further.

The technique of time-domain numerical simulation for the occurrence of water shipping on board in head waves is presented. The nonlinear effects of the large-amplitude motion are treated. These nonlinear factors include the effect of large wave amplitude, large ship motion, the change of hull configuration below the free surface and the nonlinear resultant wave. Therefore, the variation of the potentials and the hydrodynamic coefficients for a ship at each time step must be carefully treated. While handling the determination of the instantaneous wave surface around the ship hull, the complete incident, diffracted, and radiated wave system is used rather than the incident wave only. The complexity of the ship speed effect on the related terms is also treated at each time step, especially for the radiation problems. An experimental setup is also designed to measure the motion response and the relative motion, and comparisons are made. The results show excellent agreement and the validity of the theory is confirmed. The successful development of the present technique can be extended to analyze the dynamic stability, capsize phenomena, and ship motion in irregular waves

Model tests of a drillship with a rectangular moonpool opening were conducted in regular and irregular waves from the bow and bow-quarter. Most tests were conducted at zero speed, the rest was performed with the model towed to a speed of 10 kn. From the video-recordings and transfer functions of the measured relative water elevation inside the moonpool, the typical piston and first sloshing modes are well captured, for wave frequencies that agree relatively well with relevant formulations. A few tests conducted at varying wave amplitudes show that the water elevation is non-linear by nature, while repeat tests conducted with the moonpool fitted with two layers of side wall flanges shows that these can reduce the water motions by nearly 40 %.

Colour plays a decisive role in the marketing of a cosmetic product. Among thousands of substances used to colour, synthetic dyes are the most widespread in the industry. Their potential secondary effects on human health and different regulatory requirements for their use between the main world markets make analytical control necessary to guarantee the safety of a cosmetic product. However, methodologies for the determination of dyes in cosmetics are scarce with respect to those reported for other cosmetic ingredients such as preservatives or ultraviolet UV filters. In addition, most of the existing methods just consider a part of the total of dyes regulated. On the other hand, many methods have been developed for matrices different than cosmetics such as foodstuff, beverages or wastewater. The current paper reviews the recent developments in analytical methodologies for the control of synthetic dyes in cosmetics proposed in the international scientific literature in the last 10 years (2008–2018). A trend towards the use of miniaturized extraction techniques is evidenced. Due to the hydrophilic nature of dyes, liquid chromatography is the most usual choice in combination with absorbance detectors and, more recently, with mass spectrometry.

For hydrodynamic model testing different types of model waves are applied, where the most common ones are regular (monochromatic) and irregular (multichromatic) waves. In addition to these wave types the application of focusing wave groups, which are also often denoted as wave packages or transient wave packets, can give insight into aspects that cannot be assessed by the conventional model waves. This paper describes the different applications of focusing wave groups for hydrodynamic model testing. The paper starts with the historical background, followed by a theoretical description and the generation procedure. The main part of the paper is dedicated to the practical application of focusing wave groups in the basin. Items that will be described are a) the derivation of transfer functions for floating structures and for anti-roll tanks b) the determination of hydraulic and electrical transfer function of wave makers c) the verification of position and calibration of wave probes in the basin d) the generation of extreme wave events e) the assessment of reflection coefficient of beaches f) the investigation of non-linear aspects of transfer functions. Finally, characteristics of the analysis of focusing waves are introduced and compared to conventional methods based on regular and irregular waves.
