The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 has influenced many aspects of tertiary educational institutions in Japan. Many Self-Access Learning Centers (SALCs) at universities are also required to change their operation and support systems. This paper introduces how the SALC at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) has supported students during the COVID-19 pandemic and discusses successful points and limitations of the online support system, which is characterized as emergency remote support (ERS). The research analyzes survey and interview data collected from five Japanese peer advisors (PAs) who work at the SALC. We find that ERS at the SALC can sufficiently provide students with individual support in learning and practicing languages as well as some psychological support via a videoconferencing tool. However, we also identify that ERS cannot create an environment for socialization and social learning compared to the usual SALC in which students gather and socialize with others freely while developing their language and communication abilities.

This paper is a brief summary of an ethnographic research project currently in progress. Although the authors plan to present multiple papers based on the research, this paper has been written with the purpose of documenting progress so far. The main aims are to keep colleagues informed and to ensure that all of the steps are recorded to aid future dissemination of the findings. The authors summarize a project which started in June 2017 and will continue for several years observing student behaviors occurring in one social learning space in the Self-Access Learning Center (SALC) at Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS).

The authors work in the Self-Access Learning Center (SALC) at our university as student staff. Specifically, our role is as Peer Advisors (PAs), and we have supported students by having advising sessions and events related to self-directed learning. In this article, we focus on an event that PAs have organized for two years and reflect on the progress. In particular, differences between the physical and online versions of the event are mainly discussed in terms of the number of participants, topics for each session and the method for event promotion. At the end of the article, each of our personal reflections is introduced.

This study explored the technology learning model of the elderly in a senior learning center under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many senior learning centers were closed during the pandemic, and many of them adopted the mode of online education. However, problems such as decreased motivation and a lack of peer interaction still exist. To solve these problems, this study used the easy-to-implement calligraphy AR approach and E-book approach to conduct a quasi-experiment on the elderly of a calligraphy course offered by a senior learning center. The results show a higher learning motivation among the elderly who use calligraphy AR. The learning effectiveness and technology acceptance of the elderly in the E-book learning group were higher than those in the calligraphy AR group. The elderly mentioned that the E-book learning approach is more user-friendly. In general, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the suspension of classes in senior centers, education through the development of technology has stimulated the growth of education in advanced learning centers. Through this kind of scientific and technological learning method, it will bring a whole new experience to the elderly. It can improve the stress relief methods, mental health, and quality of life of the elderly during the COVID-19 emergency shutdown, and provide a novel calligraphy technique learning experience for the elderly. Therefore, we believe that the calligraphy AR learning approach and the calligraphy E-book learning approach are practical and may promote quality of life and mental health of the elderly during the emergency closures due to COVID-19, providing elderly attendees with a novel calligraphy technology learning experience.

Objectives: Planning for English learning centers for college students can meet the needs of students’ independent learning and achieve the purpose of enhancing students’ comprehensive English practice and application ability. Methods: This study proposed the characteristics and functions of the English learning center, as well as the resources and facilities of the learning center when planning the university English learning center, and explained the construction of the English learning center’s learning materials and the division of functional areas. The influencing factors of the construction of learning center materials mainly include students’ language level, learning needs, authority and applicability of learning materials. Results: On this basis, taking the English learning center plan of a university library as an example, the functional areas are divided into four functional areas: English listening, speaking, reading and writing. Conclusion: It is hoped that this research will provide some reference and reference for the planning study of university English learning center based on language learning.

The article describes the modern approaches to the informatization of educational process in higher educational institutions of Ukraine. The relevance of introducing of and its regulatory framework are investigated and the views of scientists to the definitions of "distance learning" and "information-educational environment" are summarizes. The system of work with students using distance learning courses "Business Foreign Language" and "Modern children's literature English-speaking countries" is shown on the example of BorysGrinchenko Kyiv University (Kyiv, Ukraine). The results of investigation based on a survey of students at the beginning and end of the distance courses work demonstrated that the use of distance learning coursespromotes to the self-organization of the student, improving computer skills, facilitates the process of self-learning.

The article presents the analysis of the current domestic research of the problem of self-determination. It is shown that adolescence is a sensitive period for the development of self-determination, but there are not enough studies of its dynamics at this age and ways of the formation. Self-determination is considered in the article as the opposite of addictive behavior, which makes it a resource in terms of prevention of pathological dependencies. Therefore, the proposed approach to optimization of the system of prevention in educational institutions through the development of self-determination in adolescence, based on the development of the spiritual fulfillment of the individual as the main stage of formation of the self. A model of interaction between education experts in the course of prevention of addictive behavior in educational organizations, reflecting the main stages of development of self-determination in the course of maintenance work.

JASAL (The Japan Association for Self-Access Learning) held their 12th Annual Conference/Forum on December 16th, 2017 at Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS) in Chiba. JASAL is a non-profit organization that fosters learner autonomy and self-access learning to a cross-section of educational institutions in Japan. This article contextualizes the plenary talk and selected presentations that captured the underlying themes of this conference: 1) necessity to become a social learning space for language learners, 2) necessity of structured support, and 3) necessity to assess and modify.

Introduction. With the rapid adoption of computer and networking technologies, educational institutions pay insufficient attention to the implementation of security measures to ensure the confidentiality, integrity and accessibility of data, and thus fall prey to cyber-attacks. Methods. The following methods were used in the process of writing the article: methods of generalization, analogy and logical analysis to determine and structure the motives for phishing attacks, ways to detect and prevent them; statistical analysis of data – to build a chronological sample of the world's largest cyber incidents and determine the economic losses suffered by educational institutions; graphical method – for visual presentation of results; abstraction and generalization – to make recommendations that would help reduce the number of cyber scams. Results. The article shows what role cyber security plays in counteracting phishing scams in the educational field. The motives for the implementation of phishing attacks, as well as methods for detecting and preventing them, have been identified and regulated. The following notions as "phishing", "submarine" and "whaling" are evaluated as the most dangerous types of fraud, targeting both small and large players in the information chain of any educational institution. An analytical review of the educational services market was conducted and a chronological sampling of the largest cyber incidents that occurred in the period 2010-2019 was made. The economic losses incurred by colleges, research institutions and leading universities in the world were described. It has been proven that the US and UK educational institutions have been the most attacked by attackers, somewhat inferior to Canada and countries in the Asia-Pacific region. It is found that education has become the top industry in terms of the number of Trojans detected on devices belonging to educational institutions and the second most listed among the most affected by the ransomware. A number of measures have been proposed to help reduce the number of cyber incidents. Discussion. The obtained results should be taken into account when formulating a strategy for the development of educational institutions, as well as raising the level of awareness of the representatives of the academic community in cybersecurity.
