The fields of zakat-based microfinance and community development are not often placed under the same theoretical lens that both aim to empower disadvantaged people. This study investigates the experiences of borrowers in the implementation of zakat-based microfinance and analyses the different driving factors they applied in their choice of the zakat-based microfinance of Da’arut Tauhid Peduli in Bandung, Indonesia. It applies a community development framework, based on the five characteristics, to explore this Islamic microfinance approach as an effective community development program, which has a religious dimension. Primary data were obtained from semi-structured interviews with the borrowers along with participation observation at a weekly majelis meeting, and these were triangulated with information cross-checked with management staff of the institution. The findings demonstrate three out of five characteristics of zakat-based microfinance approach as an effective community development program. They include characteristics in constantly maintaining power relation between borrowers and the institution, increasing capability and ability of borrowers to be more independent and empowered, and long-term duration of the program and sustainability. The findings showed that spiritual factors appear to have been an additional driving force on top of economic and non-economic factors for most borrowers choosing this particular program. With respect to zakat-based microfinance as a community development approach, practitioners need to develop longer-term strategic planning that takes into account the principles and core components of both zakat and community development; this would facilitate both the economical and spiritual empowerment of recipients to widen the scope of change, as well as expand benefits from their families to the wider community

In Christian and church life, Faith and Rationality are often opposed to one another. Some Christians reject the aspect of rationality in doing theology, and vice versa. In the Bible presenting Abraham as an example of faith learning through his experiences when he was tempted to offer up Isaac to his only son, he was without a doubt prepared to carry out the commandments he received with a thoughtful attitude; that God is able to raise (Isaac) people even from the dead (Hebrews 11: 17-19). The research method used is exegetical study with background and grammatical contexts. The aim of this research is to find the meaning of Abraham's faith in Hebrews 11: 17-19. The result of this research is that the quality of faith is tested and that faith thinks rationally and continuously based on God's word.

Jesus Christ - God's Wordby Ebbe FibigerOne of the most characteristic traits in Grundtvig’s ministry as preacher and hymn-writer is his use of the expression “God’s Word” as a name for Christ. God created the world through the Word. He let the Word dwell among people through Jesus Christ, and He creates what is now amongst us through the Word. Creation and Redemption through the Word - these are the major elements in Grundtvig’s theology. The place where Redemption occurs is the Church. It is here that Jesus is born and resurrected in the Word. This theology links up with Grundtvig’s use, from 1823 onwards, of the expression, “The Word is Life and Spirit”. This means at least two things: that the Word as the Word of Life triumphs over death (that is, the death of man); and that the Word as Spirit brings God’s Kingdom closer through the Church. However, it is Jesus’ concrete Words that have the quality of being “Life and Spirit”. Grundtvig fastens on the imperatives with which Jesus makes things happen. For example, ‘effata’, (be opened) to the deaf and dumb man (Mark 7:34), ‘Weep not’ to the widow of Nain (Luke 7:13) and ‘Peace’ to the disciples after the resurrection (e.g. John 20:21). With these words Jesus acts from power. This power is felt most powerfully, however, in the words of the rituals: in the questions and answers of the creed, in the words of baptism, in the Lord’s Prayer and the blessing of peace at baptism, and in the words of the Eucharist. There are similarities but also differences between the ritual words and the non-ritual. The common link is that in particular the Words are a means of power, but whereas the Words of the Eucharist and baptism take effect with no conditions attached, the Words heard in the rest of the Church’s witness only take effect on condition that the human heart believes. We can learn from Grundtvig not to say “only the Word”. His theology of the Word puts a capital W on the word, for the theology of the Word is not just word-play.

The church has not implemented many quality management (TQM) in its institutions because it is considered that this is only for companies that aim to profit. Whereas profit is not TQM orientation but customer satisfaction. The importance of TQM is due to the rapidly changing world and the presence of competitors from both similar and different institutions. One of the products offered by the church is teaching-based, especially the basic doctrines of the Christian faith. This is rarely done by the church, it can be seen from the absence of writings that discuss the doctrine of doctrine as part of church quality management and as an adaptation of the church in dealing with competitors. The approach used in this paper is a qualitative grounded research method; the reason is, that there has not been found a paper that presents the teaching of the basic doctrines of the Christian faith as part of the implementation of TQM in the Church. The results found that teaching the basic doctrines of the Christian faith has made the Church in general able to survive for thousands of years in the midst of various teaching attacks from both internal and external to the Church. The conclusion is that the teaching of the doctrine of the Christian faith is the main product of the Church in satisfying the congregation to ensure that the congregation remains part of the holy community, namely the Church, as well as being an important part of showing the quality of the Church.

This paper aims to examine a prospect of disaster education and community development at the Hua Takhe community, Thailand. It explores program and participation as well as meaning and implication of the Japanese case studies through field observations and participations. Based on the analysis of the questionnaire survey of its inhabitants, the strengths of the Hua Takhe community include solidarity, human and cultural resources, and location. Nonetheless, its weaknesses are limitation of disaster prevention-related resource, insufficient cooperation between the old and the young generation, lack of systematic disaster management, and low participation in disaster drills. While collaboration with educational institutions, informal and innovative learning, better quality of life, and being an example for other communities can be considered as its opportunities, changing ownership and usage of dwellings and unbalanced development can be its significant threats. Consequently, this paper proposes a disaster education and community development program focusing on enhancing the inclusive learning community, which contributes to the disaster resilience of the Thai communities.
