The ever-chaning dynamics of tooth growth in children 6–15 years old was observed over a 9-year as well as the level of dental care the children received was determined in collaboration with the local school’s dental personell, The scientific evidence collected in this study showed the social significance of erecting and maintaining the practice of proper dental care in the new politico-economic climate. This was confirmed by the increase in the level of dental care from insufficient (47 %) to satisfactory (75 %) over the course of 6 years due to the presence of a dental hygienist as part of the medical personelle in a secondary school. The level of dental care ranged from 23 % at the age of 6 to 75 % among graduates (same children) at the age of 17. Annually, routine examinations performed by the dental hygienist at the school covered 92.3 % of children, as a result of which over 4 years of follow-up (12–15 years old children) the number of exacerbated tooth decay decreased 3,02 times and the the prevalence of permanent tooth decay decreased. Objective performance indicators of the school dental office substantiate the importance of school dentistry. Key words: children of school age, condition of hard tissues of teeth, caries of teeth, condition of periodontal, oral hygiene. For citation: Reyzvikh OE, Shnayder SA, Anisimova LV. Over the past decades, significant progress has been made in the study of the etiology and pathogenesis and in the treatment of inflammatory periodontal diseases, including chronic generalized periodontitis, however, according to epidemiological studies, a high level of prevalence of periodontal diseases among the population of our country remains. Elderly patients sometimes do not fully adapt to the conditions of existence after complex therapy. According to the analysis of the structure of patient’s visits to the therapeutic department of the Clinic of Dentistry of the Military Medical Academy named after S.M. Kirov in the period of 2017-2019, an annual increase in the number of visits for localized and generalized periodontitis was revealed. Periodontitis ranks third or fourth among oral diseases in terms of the number of initial requests for therapeutic dental care, and second in terms of the total number of visits, second only to dental caries, which demonstrates the social significance of this disease. The dynamics of the ratio of primary and repeated visits for periodontitis is of interest. From 1:2.3 in 2017, this is the ratio in 2018. increased to 1:2.7 and reached 1: 3.5 in 2019, which indicates an increase in the quality of dental care for patients with chronic localized and generalized periodontitis. The main measures of non-surgical treatment of periodontitis were professional oral hygiene, correction of individual hygiene skills, local use of antiseptics, which meets the requirements of the clinical recommendations for the treatment of periodontitis, approved by the Decision of the Council of the Association "Dental Association of Russia". At the same time, in the surgical department of the dental clinic, curettage of periodontal pockets was performed in 639 patients in 2017-2018.

Abstract Introduction. Carelessness in caring for oral cavity in adults may contribute to severity of dental caries, periodontal diseases and diseases of mucous membranes that pose a risk to health of both dental and systemic character. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between selected demographic factors and the cause of visiting the dental practitioner and the dental health status in adults. Material and methods. The study comprised 194 patients, aged 18-34 who visited in 2015 one of the dental offices in Lublin, which offers treatment under the framework of an agreement with the National Health Fund or for a fee. Gender, age, the place of residence and the reason for visiting the dental office were analyzed. The place of residence was a village, a town of less than 200 thousand inhabitants or the city of more than 200 thousand inhabitants. The reason for visiting the dental office was a checkup visit, loss of filling or a toothache. Dental condition was assessed by calculating the DMF index. The results were statistically analyzed. Results. In the group of respondents, women accounted for 53.62%, and men – 45.88%. The prevalence of dental caries was 100% and the incidence expressed by the mean DMF index was 14.64±5.78, and increased with age. The main reason for visiting the dentist for 65.46% of respondents was a check-up visit, for 17.53% – loss of filling and for 17.01% – a toothache. The lowest incidence of tooth decay was found in people visiting the dentist for a check-up, higher in patients appearing with the loss of filling and toothache. Conclusions. A high percentage of people visiting the dentist because of toothache, confirms the low level of health-related knowledge in adult patients. High incidence of tooth decay proves the need to intensify preventive measures against the carious disease in adults. It is necessary to intensify educational activities and programs addressed to the adult part of Polish society to prevent the development of dental caries.

Abstract Introduction Dental care is provided for high-performance athletes at national and international sports events. Elite athletes may seek care for sports-related injuries and pre-existing oral diseases. Previous studies indicate an association between oral health problems and negative performance impacts in elite athletes. Objectives To determine the prevalence of the most common oral pathologies in high-performance athletes during the emergency dental care performed at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games (JPL-19). Methodology All reports of athletes (≥18 years old, of both sexes, from 41 countries) who received emergency dental care at Pan American Villas during the JPL-19 were included. Injuries and types of oral diseases were classified according to the Injury and Disease Surveillance System proposed by the International Olympic Committee. Results Of the 6680 participating athletes, 76 (1.14%) presented as dental emergencies, 90.8% (69/76) of the athletes seen presented pre-existing oral pathological conditions, the most frequent were periodontal diseases (34%, 26/76) and dental caries (29%, 22/76). Among the sports with the most cases, there were 22 (29%) in athletics, 6 (8%) in soccer, and 6 (8%) in taekwondo. The most frequent dental emergencies came from Peru, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Grenada, and Venezuela. Conclusions Pre-existing oral diseases were more frequent than sports-related accidents. The most prevalent diseases were periodontal disease and dental caries disease. It is necessary to implement new care strategies for athletes, based on prevention, before and during sports competitions.

Dental professionals are at increased risk of being infected with airborne pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2 because they are often exposed to droplets/aerosols production during dental treatment. To scientifically clear the effects of extraoral and oral suctions on the droplets and aerosols produced by dental treatments using an ultrasonic scaler was analyzed. The adenosine triphosphate and bacteria in droplets and aerosols produced during simulated scaling were quantitatively observed by reactions with luciferin/luciferase and incubation in culture plates to grow bacteria, respectively. The protection against spreading droplets and aerosols by oral and extraoral suctions was recognized, and the areas were limited to the left and posterior sides of the dental chair head when a right-handed dentist and dental hygienist performed scaling. Extraoral suction is a very useful tool for reducing the infection risk of COVID-19 in dental care, but the effective area is limited depending on physical characteristics of dentist and dental hygienist.

Visual pedagogy has emerged as a new approach in improving dental care in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). This paper aimed to evaluate and assess the scientific evidence on the use of visual pedagogy in improving oral hygiene skills and cooperation during dental care in children with ASDs. The review protocol was registered on the PROSPERO Register (CRD42020183030). Prospective clinical studies, randomized trials, interruptive case series, before and after comparison studies, and cross-sectional studies following the PRISMA guideline were searched in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Google Scholar using ad hoc prepared search strings. The search identified 379 papers, of which 342 were excluded after title and abstract evaluation, and 37 full-text papers were analyzed. An additional four papers were added after consulting reference lists. Eighteen papers were disregarded; 23 were finally included, and their potential bias was assessed using ROB-2 and ROBINS-I tools. The wide heterogenicity of the studies included does not allow for conclusive evidence on the effectiveness of visual pedagogy in oral hygiene skills and dental care. Nevertheless, a significant and unilateral tendency of the overall outcomes was found, suggesting that visual pedagogy supports ASD children in improving both oral hygiene skills and cooperation during dental care.

ABSTRACT Dentoalveolar trauma is a severe traumatic injury involving alveolar bone and dental structures. Like any trauma, it can leave irreparable sequelae and even cause tooth loss. The aim of this study is to report on the case of a dentoalveolar trauma in a 10-year-old male patient and the treatment performed with 12-month follow-up. The child had lateral luxation and displacement of teeth 11 and 21 in labial direction after a fall from his own height. The patient was examined at a hospital, received medication and was referred to a dental clinic. At the dental office, the teeth were repositioned, as well as received endodontic treatment and dental reanatomization. Two months after the trauma, root resorption was observed externally, which remained stable for 12 months. It was concluded that post-trauma treatment should be immediate and that follow-up sessions should be done carefully to minimize sequelae and to receive better prognosis.

Dementia is a clinical syndrome of loss of intellectual capability. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the dominant subtype of dementia and is common among the elderly. Because of impaired memory and disturbed executive functioning, the elderly with AD often have difficulty to perform oral hygiene practice and are at high risk of dental caries and periodontal diseases. These dental problems are ambulatory care-sensitive conditions where effective community dental care can help prevent the need for hospital admission. Community dental care practitioners can formulate effective strategies for the elderly with AD to reduce their risk of dental diseases. One of these strategies is to integrate 5S into oral hygiene practice. 5S was originally developed for organising spaces for people to work efficiently, effectively, and safely. It consists of five steps which are (i) sorting to remove unnecessary items, (ii) setting-in-order to place the items in order of flow, (iii) shining to clean and maintain the environment, (iv) standardising to establish discipline for good oral hygiene habits, and (v) sustaining to keep 5S going by auditing and improving the environment and oral hygiene practice. This system helps the elderly with AD to put things where they belong and keep the workplace clean. Moreover, it facilitates the elderly with AD to perform oral hygiene practice without wasting time and risking injury. This paper discusses the use of 5S to help the elderly with AD build and sustain an effective oral hygiene practice habit to improve their oral health.
