The review is devoted to the relations between human microbiome and physiologic and pathologic processes an aging organism. Last years, there were obtained many convincing evidences of the huge microbiome influence on different processes of the human organism functioning, including behavior and brain biochemistry. Basing on these data, specialists consider the microbiome as an additional human organ that actively participates in digestion, management of metabolic processes, maintenance of epithelial barrier integrity, development and strengthening the immune system and a number of other physiologic functions. Therefore, it optimizes conditions for the normal vital activity of the human organism on the whole. Many scientists consider aging as a chronic inflammatory process that is accompanied by unfavorable changes of the microbiome structure and functional activity. In most cases, age-related microbiome changes have negative influence on the health state, since they result in disorders of functional activity of microbe communities and failures of the metabolic chains that play the important role in functioning of many organs. It is well known that in elderly age, multiform interactions between the human organism and associated microbe communities undergo complicated changes, which may lead to strong phenotypic consequences, including dysbiosis, infections, psychosomatic diseases and general worsening of the organism functional state. It is assumed that an in-depth study of these processes with the development of age-related pathologies may facilitate the solution of many geriatrics problems. In the review, modern information is generalized that concerns composition and functional activity of the microbiota in aged people as well as the impact of the changed microbiome on disease development. There were analyzed research aimed at using some means of microbiome improvement at different age-related pathology. In the judgment of specialists, prevention of microbiome disturbances, beginning from young age, is one of most important protective measures for improving quality of life of the older population. In particular, there have been carried out many researches and their results confirm the reasonability of using probiotics for improving the state of health in elderly age. Probiotics were shown to beneficially influence the microbiome, general physical and mental state and immune status in elderly people. It is believed that regular using of probiotics favours maintaining homeostatic state of gut mucous membrane and microbiota, which is a critical component of mode of life aimed at longevity. Besides probiotics, perspective means for improving microbiome of elderly people are prebiotics, products of functional nutrition and enterosorbents. “Rejuvenation” of microbiome by virtue of wide using modern health-improving means might be one of means for prevention diseases, premature aging and an immense improvement of quality of life in advanced age. Aim:The objective of this article is to identify and analyze what is known about characteristics in and around the home that support well-being for those with cognitive impairment. This could provide direction for designers of homes in general, but specifically for designers trying to meet the needs of people with cognitive impairment.Background:It has been established that there is a relationship between psychological well-being and a person’s environment. Research also shows that particular design aspects can reduce the impact of cognitive impairment. However, there is limited design expertise in the Australian housing market to create supportive spaces which will help to reduce the impact of the disability for those with cognitive impairment.Method:A literature review was carried out to determine the extent and details of what is known about the relationship of home design and its impact on emotional, psychological, or social well-being for people with cognitive impairment.Conclusions:The study indicates that researchers in various disciplines understand that pragmatic design inputs such as thermal comfort and adequate lighting are important for people with cognitive impairment. In addition, some researchers have shown or surmise that there are other “intangible” designer-controlled elements that have beneficial impacts on people with cognitive impairment. Details of these intangible elements are sparse, and how much they might improve the quality of life for a person with cognitive impairment is not well understood. Further research is required to meet a growing need.

AbstractThe increasing number of the elderly population is a phenomenom that occurs today. The high level of dependence of the elderly causes the elderly to have the potential to be placed in care homes. The elderly are individuals who hane a high risk of isease and stressors. This, of course, requires efforts to ensure the life of the elderly, not only seen from fulfillment of the needs of the elderly but also the life quality of the eldely. The study aims to describe the quality of life of the elderly who live in care homes. The study used a literature review method by searching for articles in the Pubmed database, and google sholar. The search was conducted by combining keywords: “Elderly, “Elderly people”, “Quality of life”, “WHOQOL-BREF”, and “Nursing home” with the year 2011-2021. Participants in this study were 395 respondents of elderly living in care homes. The results of the literature review of 6 articles showed that there are 73 respondents (18,5%) with low category of life quality, 195 respondents (49,9%) with medium category of life quality, and 127 repondents (32,1%) high category of the life quality. From this study, it can be concluded that the quality of life of the elderly living in care homes is mostly (49,9%) in moderate category. The role of nurses is needed to improve the quality of life of the elderly who live in care homes.Keywords: care homes; elderly; quality of life; WHOQOL-BREF AbstrakTerjadinya peningkatan jumlah populasi lanjut usia merupakan fenomena yang terjadi saat ini. Tingkat ketergantungan lansia yang tinggi mengakibatkan lansia berpontesi untuk ditempatkan di panti sosial. Lansia merupakan individu yang memiliki resiko tinggi dan rentan terhadap penyakit serta stresor. Hal ini tentunya dibutuhkan upaya untuk menjamin hidup lansia, tidak hanya dilihat dari pemenuhan kebutuhan lansia namun juga dilihat dari kualitas hidup lansia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui gambaran kualitas hidup lansia yang tinggal di panti sosial. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode literature review, untuk pencarian artikel dengan mengakses database Pubmed, dan googlescholar. Pencarian dilakukan dengan mengkombinasi kata kunci: “elderly”, “elderly people”, “Quality of life”, “WHOQOL-BREF”, “Nursing home” dengan batasan tahun 2011-2021. Partisipan pada studi ini adalah lansia yang tinggal di panti sosial dengan total 395 lansia. Hasil penelitian literature review dari 6 artikel menunjukan kualitas hidup lansia dengan kategori rendah 73 responden (18,5%), sedang 195 responden (49,9%) dan tinggi 127 responden (32,1%). Dari penelitian ini diketahui bahwa kualitas hidup lansia yang tinggal di panti sosial sebagian besar (49,9%) dalam kategori sedang. Perlu adanya peran perawat untuk meningkatkan kualitas hidup lansia yang tinggal di panti sosial.Kata kunci : kualitas hidup; lansia; panti sosial; WHOQOL-BREF

Chronic Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) are age-related conditions, linked to functional impairment and decreased quality of life (QoL). As a result of the increased life expectancy in Europe, great attention has been focused on investigating the impact of these diseases on QoL. Thermal environment is a suitable place for providing interventions (mud therapy, bath, exercise, etc.) for chronic MSD patients. Our narrative review aims to assess if Spa therapy may improve QoL in patients with chronic MSDs. We searched randomized clinical trials and clinical trials screening PubMed and Google Scholar databases from 2016 up to March 2020. We included 14 trials testing Spa therapy interventions concerning osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic shoulder pain and fibromyalgia. In conclusion, even though limitations must be considered, evidence shows that Spa therapy, especially in combination with rehabilitation approach, can significantly improve QoL of patients with chronic MSDs.

Radiotherapy used to treat cancers in the pelvic region can have lasting side effects, and the persistence of these symptoms for 3 months or more is described as pelvic radiation disease (PRD). The growing number of pelvic cancer patients being diagnosed and successfully treated is increasing the incidence of PRD. This review examines the literature on the gastrointestinal symptoms of PRD. This includes how PRD is defined, how it is identified and how it relates specifically to the three pelvic cancers in which it most commonly manifests (prostate, gynaecological and colorectal). It pays particular attention to the impact of PRD on patient experience and quality of life. This review is the first part in a series on the GI symptoms of PRD.

Background The inclusion of specialist nurses in multi-disciplinary teams is the current gold standard for care of people with heart failure (HF) in the UK; however, they remain underutilised in practice. Though existing systematic reviews favourably compare advanced nursing roles to physician-led care, none has focused solely on HF. Aim To investigate the impact of specialist and advanced nurse-led care on the clinical outcomes, quality of life and satisfaction of people with HF compared to physician-led care. Methods Literature review and narrative synthesis. Results This review included 12 studies and categorised their measured outcomes into five domains: mortality; hospital admissions and length of stay; HF diagnosis and management; quality of life and patient satisfaction; and finally, self-assessment and self-care. Five studies appraised as medium or low risk of bias suggest the impact of specialist and advanced-level nurses on people with HF to be broadly equivalent to physicians regarding mortality, hospital admissions and length of stay, while superior in terms of self-assessment and self-care behaviours. Conclusions There were too few studies of sufficient methodological quality to draw definitive conclusions. However, no evidence was found to suggest that nurse-led services are any less effective or safe than physician-led services.

Skeletal muscle disorders are dramatically increasing with human aging with enormous sanitary costs and impact on the quality of life. Preventive and therapeutic tools to limit onset and progression of muscle frailty include nutrition and physical training. Melatonin, the indole produced at nighttime in pineal and extra-pineal sites in mammalians, has recognized anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant properties. Mitochondria are the favorite target of melatonin, which maintains them efficiently, scavenging free radicals and reducing oxidative damage. Here, we discuss the most recent evidence of dietary melatonin efficacy in age-related skeletal muscle disorders in cellular, preclinical, and clinical studies. Furthermore, we analyze the emerging impact of melatonin on physical activity. Finally, we consider the newest evidence of the gut–muscle axis and the influence of exercise and probably melatonin on the microbiota. In our opinion, this review reinforces the relevance of melatonin as a safe nutraceutical that limits skeletal muscle frailty and prolongs physical performance.
