The paper discusses the role of the ideologist of cultural movement in the reformist populism of the 1880s – 1890s, enlightener and writer Ya. V. Abramov in the context of creation of the book series “Life of remarkable people. Biographical library of F. Pavlenkovˮ. Its educational concept and democratic character are largely determined by Abramov’s social and worldview intentions — ideological inspirer of so-called “going to the people”, “going to great cultural work”, who saw the goals of such work in releasing “constrained forces and abilities of the Russian folk spirit”, supporting the “mental activity of the Russian people”, in promoting its “generation of new forms of life”. The author suggests a hypothesis, according to which the ideological genesis of the series is contained in Abramov’s short story “The Philistine Thinker” (1881), where the idea on the educational significance of the biographies of prominent people, “benefactors of mankind” was first expressed. The paper traces affinity between updating the genre of popular scientific biographies of “great people” and the educational tasks of Abramov and Pavlenkov and highlights the role of “instructive biographies” of Abramov in creating the genre type of documentary and fiction books that synthesize the qualities of “contextual biography” and “biography of the hermeneutic model”. The classic exemplarity of Abramov’s books is determined by the genre-conditioning and structure-forming function of the concept of personality; a synthesis of artistry and journalism, documentary and imagery; principles of artistic typing when working with documentary material; actualization of genre dominants (biography-life description, biography-research, biography-portrait, etc.); the poetics of narrative, objectivizing the aesthetic nature of author's subjectivity.

AbstractBiodiversity is not exclusively a product of pristine natural processes but is also, to a considerable degree, caused by human activities. This is demonstrated by a detailed inspection of the use and classification of plants by the people of Nokopo village in the Finisterre Range of Papua New Guinea. Nokopo people recognise and value biodiversity on all its levels - genetic diversity, species diversity and diversity of ecosystems - and their activities enhance overall biodiversity. This can be partly explained by the usefulness biodiversity has to them, in terms of resource access and other utilitarian considerations. On the other hand, aesthetic concepts and values make a significant contribution. Both these intrinsically interwoven components - the utilitarian and the aesthetic component respectively - form the base for understanding the major role humans play in creating and maintaining biodiversity, the role of keystone species enhancing overall biodiversity in a given ecosystem.

The article analyzes the novel by I. Franco “William Tell” through the prism of musical code and musical ecfrasis. So far, none of the French scholars has paid attention to the plot-forming role of the Rossini’s opera in the short story, but in the first part of the four-part short story the young couple is going to the opera, in the following parts Franco gradually reveals the heroine’s perception of the overture to the opera, and then its individual scenes. After the end of the opera, Olya novelistically unexpectedly, on the external-eventual plane of the novel, declares that she is not in love with Volodko, but on the internal, spiritual and psychological - thanks to the verbal description of the music and its perception by the heroes - this becomes natural. With the help of musical ecfrasis, the depth of Olya’s impression of the Rossini’s opera and the heroine’s psychological sensitivity to what she heard become clear. Moreover, Franco finds his “niche” in the image of the heroine's understanding of opera music: while foreign writers of the mid-19th century most often describe the feelings and emotions that heroes evoke in music, Franco, relying on picture programmability (landscapes of his native land and ideal representations of the heroine about family happiness), which Olya accompanies the heard music, reveals the rich inner world of the girl and her ideals. Rossini’s romantic heroic-patriotic opera “Wilhelm Tell”, her musical images and stage performance become a litmus test in the novel: the relationship of the characters to the opera performance, impressions of it become an important way of revealing their characters. Volodka’s superficial attitude to music as entertainment, on the one hand, and Olya’s ability under the influence of music to see the true meaning of life, correcting her worldview from pastorally romantic to heroic-romantic, on the other hand, make it possible to understand the different life positions of the heroes - the intellectual adaptive Volodka’s service to the people of Olya, and, in fact, the ideological and artistic concept of the writer himself.

Produced in the immediate aftermath of the tsunami and earthquake that hit Japan on the 11th of March 2011, Toshi Fujiwara’s film No Man’s Zone(Mujin Chitai, 2012) is a portrait of a country coming to terms with the nuclear fallout in Fukushima. Interviews are interlaced with long takes of the post-apocalyptic landscape and subtle observations that point to the suffering and trauma by the people living in, or uprooted from, the area near the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The film also questions the role of images of the disaster and indeed the role of the filmmaker creating these very images. Marco Bohr highlights how the philosophical debate about the role of images produced in a disaster zone is primarily facilitated through the aesthetic, formal and structural device of the essay film. Its self-reflexivity is deployed here as a strategy to provoke the viewer in seeing representations of the disaster in a new light.

AbstractDiasporic writing has given rise to what some critics have called “Half-bred poetics” or “Hyphen poetics”, among other terms, and it is in the context of this poetics that diasporic writing can be best understood. Most accounts of the aesthetic features that characterise diasporic literatures stop at the analysis of what is probably its most salient characteristic, that is, the issue of interlingualism and language variance. However, in this paper I will analyse the recurrent use of dramatic irony in several Chicano short stories in order to explain the reasons why this type of irony is so convenient for diasporic prose writers.Key words: Half-bred poetics, Chicano Literature, short story, dramatic irony.

Festivals are considered as safety valve. It removes the stress and strain of time and circumstances. In a year, the Zeliangrong people of Northeast India celebrate nine festivals based on agricultural operations of lunar calendar. The ways of life of the people are reflected in their various festivals and their social relevance is very great. They provide not only entertainment and social festivities to them, but also act as an integrating force for the community as a whole. Among the festivals, Gaan-ngai is the biggest festival of the Zeliangrongs and it lasts for five days. It is during the celebration that they perform rites and rituals, offer prayer to Tingkao Ragwang, the Supreme God for abundant harvest, well-being and general prosperity for the whole village community. They also bid ritual farewell to the dead ancestors. The cultural values, the aesthetic and creative senses, their love of beauty and color are expressed in the festival. Dances, folk songs, drum beating, shouting of hoi, traditional games and sports etc. are performed in the festival. Various items of delicious food and drink for the festival are prepared and consumed. The role of women is very great as they actively take part in the festival like their male counterparts. The girls of the dormitory perform the dances called Chapa Laam and the married women too perform dances on the fifth day. Food and drink of the festival are prepared by them only. Without women the celebration of Gaan-ngai festival is incomplete. Usually, the Gaan-ngai festival is celebrated in the month of December or January every year.

Frantz Fanon’s rebound book Wretched of the Earth discusses his theories and understandings of decolonization, specifically the role of art and culture and how it is affected by a colonizer. In this essay, I analyze whether his theories can be applied to N.K. Jemisin’s short story “The City Born Great,” from her collection of short stories How Long ’Til Black Future Month?, which considers the diaspora, not the colonized nations that Fanon considers in his own writings. Through her reflection of the realities of a people, and her portrayal of an “awakener” of the people, I conclude that although Jemisin does write literature of combat, a term coined by Fanon to include anti-colonial writing and art, she does so in a way that uniquely reflects the African-American diaspora that “The City Born Great” considers and reflects.

In the era of globalization the development of science and technology is developing very rapidly. With the development of science and technology many foreign cultures / foreign cultures have entered Bali. Bali is one of the provinces in Indonesia which is known as the island of a thousand temples, so that a lot of Balinese culture is starting to fade. Youth plays a very important role in the success of a nation. Ajeg bali is an identity politics or movement to maintain Balinese ethnic identity that aims to restore Balinese society in the context of the experience of the teachings of Hinduism and Balinese culture (re-Balinization and re-Hinduisasi). Ajeg Bali is closely related to the implementation of the Tri Hita Karana concept in social life. Where the implementation of the steady Balinese concept is expected to create harmony in Bali and preservation of traditions and culture in Bali. Youth in Bali do not consider Ajeg Bali to be a stagnant concept but rather a conscious and sustainable modernization. In practice, Balinese youth are able to defend their identity and culture from the new values and culture that globalization promotes. Until then redefining the role of all elements of Balinese society, especially young people, trying to restore the meaning of Balinese culture and traditions in the daily breath of its people.
