The total excellence of university teaching largely depends on pedagogical and didactical­methodical competencies of university professors. The development and promotion of academic teaching is enabled by the modernization of the teaching process which does not encompass only modernization of curriculum but the entire didactical­methodical organization of teaching. Pleasure and requirements of students are to be accentuated accordingly, as well as competencies of teachers and expectations of labor market. The purpose of this paper is to establish which element of didactical­methodical organization of university teaching is the most important dimension of excellence of teaching as well as in what way university professors perform self­evaluation of the excellence of didactical­methodical organization of teaching at the University of Tuzla. The analytical­descriptive survey method was used as a variant of analytical­descriptive method as well as procedures of analysis of contents and polling. It is supposed that there is statistically significant difference in self­evaluation of the importance of elements of excellence in didactical­methodical organization of teaching at the University of Tuzla and that self­evaluations of the importance of individual elements of excellence of university teaching differ with regard to age, sex, teaching/academic title, years of experience in academic institutions and scientific field the faculty belongs to. The results of this research show that the excellence of planning and preparation and excellence in choice of teaching methods are the most important elements of excellence in the organization of university teaching, and that 90% of teaching personnel evaluates that the classes they organize are at very high level of excellence.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the flexible decision pathways adopted by development advisors in the management of uncertainty in property development. Specifically, the study examines the quantitative techniques adopted by development advisors, the level of adoption of real options analysis (ROA) vis-à-vis the level of adoption of heuristics. Finally, the types of options exercised in property development were analysed. This was with a view to providing information that could mitigate the challenges of risk and uncertainty and increasing investment failure associated with property development in Nigeria, an emerging market. Design/methodology/approach The study adopted a survey method and was conducted on development advisors in property development companies/estate surveying and valuation firms in Nigeria. A total of 195 development advisors participated in the survey. The respondents were required to rate, on a five-point Likert scale, the level of adoption of the quantitative models, heuristics and the types of flexibility exercised during development. The data were analysed using mean rating, one-sample t-test and analysis of variance. Findings The results revealed that there was a preference for the use of traditional techniques, while probabilistic appraisal models and other contemporary methods such as ROA are seldom adopted by development advisors. While there was a significantly high level of adoption of heuristics, the stratified analysis examining the profile of the respondents and the level of adoption of ROA and heuristics suggests that years of experience influenced the level of adoption of both the ROA and heuristics by the development advisors. The analysis of the types of flexibility showed that staging/phasing and changing the initial use/design were the most prevalent flexibility pathways adopted during the development. However, the study found that there was no significant difference concerning the choice of flexibility being adopted by development advisors who used ROA and those who did not. Practical implications The study provides an understanding of the decision pathways adopted by development advisors in an emerging market like Nigeria. Originality/value The paper contributes to studies on decision-making pathways in the management of uncertainty under dynamic conditions by development advisors in emerging markets.

    This study aimed to find out the level of Psychological Security of Nizwa University students and to find out the differences in level of Psychological Security according to gender (males/ females), the sample included (238) males and females. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, the descriptive approach was used. The researcher used the Maslow scale for the sense of Psychological Security and interpolation by Dawani and Dirani (1983) in the Abdullah’s study (1996) after verifying its validity and stability. The study sample (238) students from Nizwa University in the Sultanate of Oman were randomly chosen. The findings of the study could be summarized as the following: there is a high level of Psychological Security with Nizwa University students according to the comprehensive Psychological Security scale with a median (2.24) feeling with Psychological Security compares to threat with average (2.29) and feeling love to hatred with average (2.25) feeling with loyalty to loneliness with average (2.19), there is a significant difference at the level of α=0.05 between males and females in favour of the males. In light of the results, a number of recommendations and proposals were submitted to enhance the level of psychological security among students of the University of Nizwa, and the general Omani and Arab universities.

The Abstract Algebra is one of the most difficult subjects for students. In this course, students are required to have several textbooks as their reading source. However, the existing textbooks do not guide students in carrying out the process of preparing evidence and tend to speak non-Indonesian languages. The purpose of this research is to design and develop textbooks on abstract algebra courses which contain proofs in full step by step that can improve the ability to organize evidence. This type of research is development research with formative evaluation design consisting of self-evaluation, prototyping (expert reviews, one-to-one, and small groups), and field tests. The validity of the development of abstract algebra textbook is passed through the stages of self-evaluation and expert reviews. The results showed that the prototype of abstract algebra teaching books had a very high level of validity (89.29%).

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to appraise and express one’s emotions, appraise and recognize the emotion of others, regulate one’s emotion, and use the emotion to facilitate one’s performance. Job performance of teaching employees refers to the instructional skills, personal & social qualities, educational leadership, and executive ability of the teachers, which is evaluated by the employees and their respective department/office head. This study was designed to examine the correlation between EI and job performance of the teaching employees. The study utilized a descriptive quantitative survey method using standardized questionnaires in gathering the data. The study respondents comprised 111 full-time teaching regular employees in different departments of the University of Bohol. This study used the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale with overall reliability between 0.77-0.91, which measured the EI of the respondents. Results displayed a significant positive correlation between EI and job performance. This study implies that as EI increases, the job performance of the teaching employees also increases. Moreover, the job performance between self-evaluation and office head evaluation does not significantly differ. This research indicates that the evaluation scores have no difference in how the teaching employees rated themselves and their respective office/department heads.

AbstractThe author reports her experience of and observations on the teaching of sociology at the Free University of Berlin. She examines the teaching behavior of the instructors, the relationship between colleagues, and those between teachers and students. Certain tendencies in the practice of teaching are viewed as expressing a form of coping by projection with the failures experienced in trying to reform studies, failures that are in fact caused by the unfavorable real conditions at the university. A tendency to make university teaching more like schooling is observed; reasons for this are found in the effects of pressure towards professional competition, which prevents both fruitful cooperation between instructors and genuine communication with students. The additional difficulties experienced by women in teaching are described. In the final section conclusions are drawn in the form of practical suggestions which take account of the actual possibilities of a university with very large numbers of students.

Depression is associated with absenteeism and presentism, problems in workplace relationships and loss of productivity and quality. The present work describes the validation of a web-based system for the assessment of depression in the university work context. The basis of the system is the Spanish version of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II). A total of 185 participants completed the BDI-II web-based assessment, including 88 males and 97 females, 70 faculty members and 115 staff members. A high level of internal consistency reliability was confirmed. Based on the results of our web-based BDI-II, no significant differences were found in depression severity between gender, age or workers’ groups. The main depression risk factors reported were: “Changes in sleep”, “Loss of energy”, “Tiredness or fatigue” and “Loss of interest”. However significant differences were found by gender in “Changes in appetite”, “Difficulty of concentration” and “Loss of interest in sex”; males expressed less loss of interest in sex than females with a statistically significant difference. Our results indicate that the data collected is coherent with previous BDI-II studies. We conclude that the web-based system based on the BDI-II is psychometrically robust and can be used to assess depression in the university working community.

The study aimed to identify the current method used for selecting academic leaders at emerging Saudi universities from the viewpoint of faculty members working there, and whether there is a correlation between the method used and the following variables: job satisfaction, organizational justice, organizational commitment, productivity motivation, and institutional loyalty and affiliation. In order to achieve the goals of the study, the researcher designed a questionnaire that included identifying the method used. The questionnaire consisted of (31) items divided according to the variables mentioned, and it was distributed to the study sample (300 faculty members), randomly chosen from the study community (2382 members). The results showed that there is a correlation between the method used and the variables mentioned which were at an intermediate level, with the exception of the productivity motivation that was at a high level for university professors, despite the fact that the foregoing variables were lower than expected. This made the researcher recommend that the university and the Ministry of Education would review that mechanism and hold conferences and workshops in order to address it before these positive professors suffer from disappointment and job burnout. The study also revealed that there were statistically significant differences at the level of (α = 0.05) in experience in favor of (10) years or more, in the academic rank in favor of (Assistant Professor), and in officiality and contracting in favor of the contracting parties.

This study aimed to examine change leadership practices at the University of Khartoum with a major purpose of enhancing the importance and understanding of change leadership practices at the University of Khartoum. This study tried to capture staff members’ perception of the creating a climate for change, engaging and enabling the whole organization and implementing and sustaining change. In doing so, a survey research design was employed. Data were collected using questionnaire from university's staff members. The result shows high level of change leadership practices in the University of Khartoum with its different dimensions. Consequently, creating a climate for change has practiced in the University of Khartoum. The University of Khartoum has engaged and enabled the whole organization in the change process. The findings indicate that the University of Khartoum has implemented and sustained change process. Besides, no statistically significant difference between the male and female groups in the extent of change leadership practices. Therefore, it was reflected that the university leaders should make a strong case for the necessity of the change prior to implementation. Overall, the vision, strategies and objectives of the University of Khartoum should involve the importance of change. In addition, extra efforts should be made to maintain change leadership culture in the University of Khartoum.

The purpose of the work is to evaluate the potential of a high school teacher; the subject of study is employment potential and competitiveness of the university faculty member; research methods include analysis of statistical data and online-survey. The article presents the results of the research potential of the university teaching staff in the conditions of ongoing reforms in higher education and in connection with changing requirements to higher education institutions forfaculty members. It was determined that faculty members demonstrate high loyalty and commitment, but average engagement. It was revealed that the institution creates proper conditions for development and self-realization, creativity and communication. It was confirmed that university professors have a high scientific and innovative potential and willingness to conduct research. The conclusion is that the employment potential of university staff is not used to the full. It was determined that the majority of the teaching staff appreciates personal competitiveness. And only one out of five is aware of the need to develop their personal competitiveness in line with the new requirements. The results of the study may be useful for university governance within the management of human resources quality.

Information seeking modes are changing rapidly due to advancements in portable devices such as smartphones. The functionality of smartphones is helping individuals to enhance their online learning experiences. The study was conducted to assess the readiness level among students towards the adoption of mobile learning at The Islamia University of Bahawalpur. A survey method of research was used to collect data for this study. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed through convenience sampling among the enrolled students of The Islamia University of Bahawalpur. Of the 183 respondents, the majority of 118 (64.5%) were female. Overwhelming, 170 (92.9%) respondents' usage frequency was 'daily' for accessing information through mobile. Stages of change model indicated that most of the respondents were at the 'maintenance stage' indicating that they were regularly using mobile for learning. The main barriers to mobile learning included: 'mobile learning causes sore eyes', and 'mobile screen size makes it difficult to concentrate on contents. The study concluded that a high level of readiness exists among students towards adopting mobile learning as they are regularly using smartphones to access the information from online resources to fulfill the requirements of formal learning. A statistically significant difference was found in the readiness level as female students are more likely to adopt m-learning than male students. The study's findings are useful for librarians, faculty members, IT experts, and policymakers of the participating university in designing mobile-related services for students to enhance learning communications and collaborations.
