Hygrophila auriculata (H. auricalata) plant extract was studied for it phytochemical constituents, acute toxicity and its anti-diarrhoea ‎l activity in albino rats using standard procedure. The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of cardiac glycosides, terpenoids and saponins. The acute toxicity of the extract was above 2000 mg/kg b. wt which is slightly toxic. The result of castor oil induced diarrhoea ‎ model indicates that the extract at all test doses was significant (p<0.05). Similarly, the extract produced a significant (p<0.05) decline in the weight and volume of intestinal contents at all tested doses. In addition, a significant (p<0.05) reduction in the gastrointestinal motility in charcoal meal test was also observed in all doses of the extract administered. This activity may be attributed to the presence of the identified phytchemicals in the plant extract. The results in this study confirmed the ‎anti-diarrhoea. ‎ ‎l activity of the aerial part of H. auriculata and hence support the folkloric believe and provide the scientific basis for the traditional use of this plant in the treatment of diarrhoea.

Lespedeza cuneata, belonging to Fabaceae, is well-known as Chinese bushclover, and it has been used in traditional folk medicines for the treatment of disorders, such as diabetes, hematuria, and insomnia. As part of continuing research projects to discover interesting natural compounds with biological activities from Korean medicinal plants, the phytochemical investigation of L. cuneata resulted in the isolation of five chemical constituents: α-tocopherol (1), 7a-methoxy-α-tocopherol (2), 13(R)-hydroxy-octadeca-(9Z,11E,15Z)-trien-oic acid (3), α-dimorphecolic acid (4), and lupeol (5). The structural determination of the isolated compounds was elucidated from data gathered through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC/MS). Until now, this study is the first to report these five compounds from the plant L. cuneata. Moreover, these isolated compounds (1–5) were evaluated for their anti-adipogenesis effects and their role in lipid metabolism during adipocyte maturation. As a result, the upregulation of mRNA expression levels of Fabp4 from 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes treated with compounds 3 and 4 demonstrated that these compounds efficiently induced adipocyte differentiation. Furthermore, compounds 3 and 4 were found to regulate lipid metabolism by the induction of lipolytic and of lipogenic gene expressions. Therefore, experimental data from these findings supported that the compounds 3 and 4 induce the adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes and regulate lipid metabolism.

This study evaluates the nutritional and anti-nutritional potentials of the aerial part of Lablab purpureus as it relates to its use in Animal nutrition. The preliminary phytochemical test of the plant revealed the presence of bioactive secondary metabolites; glycosides, saponins, flavonoids, tannins, steroids, alkaloids, coumarins, phenols, carbohydrates and terpenoids in the crude extract. Results from the study revealed significant mineral composition in Lablab purpureus. Atomic Absorption Spectroscopic (AAS) technique was employed in the elemental analysis. Substantial amounts of Ca, Na, K and Mg were found, while Cu, Fe, P, Mn and Zn were present in trace amounts. Proximate analysis revealed the ash and fat contents to be 5.6 % and 4.2 % respectively. The protein level, total Carbohydrate and Fibre contents were determined to be 25.4 %, 46.93 % and 7.5 % respectively. The presence of anti-nutritional secondary metabolites; tannins, saponins, oxalates, phytates, cyanogenic glycosides and free phenolics were quantitatively determined to be 0.50 %, 3.8 %, 0.70 %, 2.2 %, 1.2 % and 2.1 % respectively. The results of the phytochemical constituents, proximate composition, anti-nutritional factors and mineral composition of the aerial part of Lablab purpureus in this study demonstrates high nutrients content with potentials to meet the nutritional requirements in monogastric diets.Keywords: Anti-nutritional composition, Lablab Purpureus, Mineral composition, Proximate analysis

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the hypolipidemic and antioxidant properties of aerial parts aqueous extract of Warionia saharae (APAE of W. saharae) in normal and streptozotocin (STZ) induced-diabetic rats. Additionally, the quantitative and qualitative analysis for the presence of different phytochemical constituents in the APAE of W. saharae was performed. Methods: The effects of oral administration of APAE of W. saharae (5 mg/kg) on the plasma Total Cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) levels were measured in both normal and diabetic rats. Moreover, the antioxidant capacity was realized by the method of DPPH. Total polyphenol as x of the APAE of W. saharae were determined. Results: APAE of W. saharae showed a strong hypolipidemic and antihyperglycemic effects both in normal and in STZ induced diabetic rats. On the other hand, APAE of W. saharae showed a potent antioxidant activity and revealed inhibitory activity. Moreover, the quantitative determination of total polyphenol and flavonoid contents showed high contents of these phytochemicals. Concerning the qualitative analysis several classes of chemicals have been found. Conclusion: APAE of W. saharae (5 mg/kg) shows the potential cholesterol and glucose lowering activity as well as antioxidant properties in both normal and STZ-induced diabetic rats.

Objective: To study the antimicrobial activity ethanolic extracts of dried fruits of Solanumtorvum (family-solanaceae) along with preliminary phytochemical analysis.Methods: The ethanolic extract of dried fruits of the herb Solanumtorvum (family-solanaceae) were prepared and analyzed for phytochemical constituents using standard methods. The antimicrobial activity of the plant extracts were examined against 2 bacterial strains among one is gram positive and other is gram negative and 2 fungus using agar well diffusion method.Results: The present experiment shows the phytochemical analysis, antimicrobial activity of the ethanolic extract of dried fruits of the plant Solanumtorvum (family-solanaceae). Various phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, saponin, flavonoids, carbohydrates, glycosides, Steroids, proteins and amino acids and tannins. All the extracts of the plant showed antimicrobial activity against most of the test organisms.Conclusion: It can be concluded ethanolic extract of whole aerial parts of the Solanumtorvum (family-solanaceae) contain the high presence of phytochemicals. This extract was found to possess promising antimicrobial activity when compared with the standards.

Herbal medicines possess a great demand in both developed and developing countries as a source of primary health care owing to their attributes having wide biological and medicinal activities, high safety margins and lesser costs. People living in rural areas of Nepal depend largely in the herbal medicines for the treatment. The present study concerns with the study of pharmacognostic characteristics, phytochemical constituents and the biological activity of Amaranthus spinosus L. The hexane, chloroform, ethanolic and aqueous extract of its aerial parts were subjected to preliminary phytochemical analysis and detected saponin, carbohydrate, tannin, protein, glycoside, flavonoid and phenol as phytoconstituents. The transverse section of the stem and leaves showed characteristic vascular bundle tissues. All the extracts were used for testing the antimicrobial activity and brine shrimp lethality. No extract showed the antimicrobial activity and ethanolic extract showed LC50 value of 31.62 ppm. The cytotoxicity of the methanol extract of Origanum syriacum against human cerivical adenocarcinoma, Hela cells, was evaluated by the MTT assay. From the crude extract, a new flavone glycoside, acacetin-7-O-[2´´-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-6´´-O-β -D-glucopyranosyl]-β -D-glucopyranoside (1), together with the ten known flavonoids luteolin (2), apigenin (3), luteolin-6-C-glucoside (4), luteolin-3´-methylether-6-C-glucoside (5), luteolin-7,4´-dimethyether-6-C-glucoside (6), apigenin-7- methylether-6-C-glucoside (7), apigenin-7-O-glucoside (8), diosmetin-7-O-glucoside (9), acacetin- 7-O-glucoside (10) and acacetin-7-O-rutinoside (11), was isolated from the methanol extract of the aerial parts of Origanum syriacum. The structure elucidation of the isolated compounds was performed by spectroscopic and chromatographic methods.
