Three groups of planning techniques and foundations for decision‐making techniques have been identified. Their development tendencies have been indicated, as well as degree of practical usage by Polish construction companies. Two periods: the years 1990 and 2005 have been compared. Data and numbers have been obtained mainly by questionnaires and personal contacts. A relationship between the degree of utilisation of the discussed techniques and the type, size, and legal ownership of a construction company has not been found, in spite of current prosperity trends in the construction sector. A discrepancy between the evaluation of the degree of attractiveness of techniques and methods from the viewpoint of academics and building company managers has been pointed out.

A variety of insurance options are used when managing risk in the construction industry. Numerous insurers operating on the Polish market provide suitable types of insurance, thus allowing participants of a construction process to obtain a comprehensive cover against almost all potential risks. Therefore, ‘all-risks’ types of insurance is of particular importance in case of construction and assembly activities. In addition to this instrument, the paper also deals with other forms of insurance used in the construction sector in Poland, which apply to various aspects of activities conducted by actors involved a construction project. This is the main topic of the paper, which also outlines the theory on the subject as well as providing the results of empirical research carried out in this area and emphasizing the practical applicability of the discussions. Consequently, the key aim of the paper is to present the issues related to insurance in the construction industry as a method of financing risk in operations of construction companies. The paper adopts a synthetic approach to these issues. The paper also reviews the related scholarly literature.

Although reusable materials in a construction project need to be specifically managed by the head office of the construction company for proper retrieval and reuse, they are not efficiently managed. In many cases, construction companies treat reusable materials no differently from non-reusable materials. To manage reusable materials for effective and efficient procurement, the current procurement system needs to be improved based on the records of usage from multiple projects monitored and managed by the head office of the construction company. The objective of this paper is to discern and analyze the problems of the procurement process of reusable materials for current multiple projects by following case studies of three construction companies against this background. Based on the analysis, this paper emphasizes the need to implement systems for reusable materials procurement requests, outgoing materials quantity forecasts, and economic analysis for vehicle distribution, as well as the need to expand applicable uses of a resource pool. A model is also proposed to support the decision-making process in the procurement of reusable materials.

This paper examines the reporting of Key Audit Matters (KAMs) in independent auditor‟s report for construction sector in the Malaysian market. It also aims to identify whether the specific characteristics of construction company will influence the KAMs reporting for Malaysian companies. The sample covers all construction companies listed on Bursa Malaysia with available data one year upon the implementation of KAMs. This business sector has been the subject of the study due to the fact that construction sector, despite being a high-risk sector, is among important sectors that contribute to the development of the economy of a country. The objective of the study is achieved through content analysis. The maximum and minimum number of KAMs disclosed are six and one respectively for this sector. The main issue addressed as KAMs in construction sector is revenue. The revenue recognition in the construction sector is affected by the unexpected occurrences and this, in turn, will affect the estimated cost and profit. The findings discover that the practice on the KAMs disclosed has been critically assessed by the auditors, but there is exception on some of the practice. In the construction sector, the items listed as KAMs basically relates to areas that required a significant amount of judgement from auditors (matters that involve high uncertainty estimation). However, for some of the KAMsdisclosure, 24% of the sample do not highlight the reason of why the items listed as KAMs. This circumstance would provide questions whether auditors had dismissed the guidelines of the disclosure of KAMs or auditors did not understand the KAMs‟ practices comprehensively. Therefore, further monitoring is needed to ensure the successful implementation of KAMs. This study only covers a limited sample of one year upon implementation of KAMs. It provides an empirical data and description on Key audit matters (KAMs) disclosure in the independent auditor‟s report of the Malaysian Listed company.

Purpose Improving the resilience of the construction sector helps countries recover quicker from crises and can assist with improving community resilience and recovery. This study aims to explore ways in which the construction sector might improve its resilience. Design/methodology/approach This paper examined past disasters and the role construction plays to understand what and how better construction resilience can be built, and the impact this will have on recovery and reconstruction. Findings The findings showed that after a crisis, the construction sector is called upon to manage building and infrastructure recovery and reconstruction. Construction organisations are needed by the community, as they provide physical resources, people, materials, logistics, management and technical expertise and rebuilding. To ensure that recovery and reconstruction programs are successfully implemented, it is necessary for the construction sector to be resilient. To achieve improved resilience in the construction industry, disaster resilience management needs to become mainstreamed into construction processes. Research limitations/implications Although larger organisations have some preparation to respond to crises, including having emergency or disaster plans, smaller companies struggle to achieve a reasonable level of resilience. It appears that senior management and key people in construction organisations are familiar with the procedures but that the majority of staff in organisations lack knowledge and skills. Practical implications Understanding the role the construction sector plays in disasters and providing directions for improving construction sector resilience will ultimately improve recovery and reconstruction outcomes. Social Implications This paper discusses how communities rely on services provided by construction organisations to enable them to recover from emergencies and crises. Pre-disaster construction company resilience impacts on the ability of construction companies to function post-disaster. Originality/value This paper focuses on a number of cases and shows where and how the construction sector has worked in disasters and provides a new analysis of the role the industry plays, and the various disaster stages where the industry has maximum impact.

Abstract The influence that general contractors and subcontractors have on the operation of a company is immense. Keeping this in mind, the authors have decided to develop and algorithm based on the analysis of partnering relations between construction companies that would select the best possible construction company for the purposes of cooperation. This algorithm, developed for a given construction company, is meant to support its decision-making system in the field of the selection of another construction company to cooperate with. The author has made references to earlier research, in which she had used the ELECTRE III method, and in which she bad analysed the possibility of applying the BIPOLAR method in order to solve the problem of the selection of a construction company to develop partnering relations with. The author provided an example of the calculations performed for a selection of construction companies.
