Formwork material and payroll are among the greatest costs in building reinforced concrete structures. Therefore, formwork engineering is a key factor affecting project success. Traditional formwork construction entails non-value-adding activities resulting in waste. The objective of this study is to adapt lean manufacturing techniques to formwork engineering in a bid to reduce waste, specifically by developing a lean formwork construction model. In the model, andon is used to establish an on-site quality control culture, allowing form workers to obtain assistance immediately whenever a problem occurs. In addition, formwork operations are pulled through the kanban system to reduce mould inventory and achieve continuous construction flow. A case study is used to validate the applicability of the proposed model. Results show that the proposed model can effectively reduce waste in the formwork construction flow and increase the value of operations, thus providing a new approach to improving formwork engineering.

Habitat loss has reduced the available resources for apiarists and is a key driver of poor colony health, colony loss, and reduced honey yields. The biggest challenge for apiarists in the future will be meeting increasing demands for pollination services, honey, and other bee products with limited resources. Targeted landscape restoration focusing on high-value or high-yielding forage could ensure adequate floral resources are available to sustain the growing industry. Tools are currently needed to evaluate the likely productivity of potential sites for restoration and inform decisions about plant selections and arrangements and hive stocking rates, movements, and placements. We propose a new approach for designing sites for apiculture, centred on a model of honey production that predicts how changes to plant and hive decisions affect the resource supply, potential for bees to collect resources, consumption of resources by the colonies, and subsequently, amount of honey that may be produced. The proposed model is discussed with reference to existing models, and data input requirements are discussed with reference to an Australian case study area. We conclude that no existing model exactly meets the requirements of our proposed approach, but components of several existing models could be combined to achieve these needs.

Abstract: Lean manufacturing has been one of the most standard method in the manufacturing and service industry for elimination of waste. Every manufacturing industry has to put in continuous effort for its survival in the current impulsive and competitive economy. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the adoption of lean manufacturing tools and techniques in the manufacturing industries. This paper is based on actual implementation of lean manufacturing techniques. It focuses on the execution of flow from the start until the end of the implementation, types of analysis and tools applied, evaluation methods and how the industry benefited from the implementation. In this case study we particularly focused on Shop floor management, Quality Management (QM), Supplier and Customer Management (SCM) and Workforce Management (WM). After going through various testing on implementation of Lean Manufacturing principles in Micro Small medium Enterprise (MSME), researcher studied thoughts of some author where they discussed pragmatic problems they overcome while implementing lean principles in developing economies MSME. At the end, the result shows that there is monthly increment in capital productivity and labour productivity. And decrement in inhouse rejection, breakdown hours and customer complaint from the implementation of lean.

In several developing countries, the electricity crisis obstructs both socio-economic and technological sustainable evolution. Also, it leads to reducing job availability due to shut down several industries or relocate to neighbouring countries to such an issue. A Najaf City is an important holy and tourist city in the middle of Iraq country. Indeed, waste management in An Najaf City needs to be reconsidered to be used as an energy source. In this article, we investigated and listed the waste quantity which produced recently (one year) respect to waste types and types of content. Data collected from the waste products for one year and are used as a key factor to study the feasibility of generating electrical energy from collected MSWs. The proposed model was simulated and tested respect to cost analysis factor of the suggested power plant by Homer pro simulation software. Results were very encouraging and competitive to the current energy production cost based on the production cost of the Kwh prospective among the conventional methods in Iraq. The proposed scenario provide proper and secure waste proposal technique with low-cost.

AbstractMulti-agent systems have been widely used in the literature, including for the monitoring of distributed systems. However, one of the unresolved issues in this technology remains in the reassignment of the responsibilities of monitoring agents when some of them become unable to meet their obligations. This paper proposes a new approach for solving this problem based on (a) the gathering of evidence on whether the agent can or cannot fulfil the tasks it has been assigned and (b) the reassignment of the task to alternative agents using their trust level as a selection parameter. A weather station case study is proposed as an instantiation of the proposed model.

Recently, the company’s overall performance (OP) has become a major concern of our modern society, as a key factor that can potentially increase firm’s competitive advantage and ensure its sustainable development. However, OP is increasingly being considered as highly complex because of the complex interrelationships within industrial systems. This article presents a contribution to modeling of OP in order to apprehend its complexity and take into account the interactions between all its aspects. The proposed model is based on a combination of the value chain concept and System Modeling Language modeling. The main study established an OP indicators system to better present the firm sustainability behavior, and thus provide a comprehensive view that facilitates an in-depth understanding of its complexity. Besides, a case study from the dairy industry is presented to illustrate the model. This model can identify different activities’ interactions in the firm and understand interrelationships between OP dimensions and firm’s activities. Moreover, the proposed indicators system helps to define OP problems in the firm. Such knowledge enables managers to identify OP problems’ drivers, the related activities and set up the optimal solutions to improve the most critical activities whose performance affect the whole value chain.

The Japanese carmaker Toyota has long been regarded as the pinnacle of Japanese innovation, manufacturing quality and industrial strength — particularly since it overtook General Motors in 2008 to become the world's biggest carmaker. Its "lean" manufacturing techniques and culture of continuous improvement were the envy of the business world. Companies sent delegations to tour Toyota's factories in the hope that some of its magic would rub off on them. But within a few weeks all this has changed. Problems with "unintended acceleration" of its cars which the firm has belatedly taken seriously, has resulted in a crisis within the company. Toyota's woes were compounded on 9 February 2009 when it said it would also recall 440,000 hybrid vehicles, including the celebrated Prius, to fix a problem with their brakes. The firm's reputation for quality, on which the business was built, is shattered. Its market capitalization has dropped by an amount roughly equal to the entire value of Ford. But the greatest damage has been done by its misreading and mishandling of the crisis. Surrounding this current problem, we came with an interesting question: Can the Toyota Way bring back Toyota to the lead? The aim of this paper has the intention to answer two significant questions. The first question is "Is the Toyota Way safe enough to prevent problems brewing outside its factories?" In order to address this question and get reasonable answer, this study tries to use the Theory of Constraints (TOC) to discover the root causes and countermeasures of how Toyota's Way can bring back Toyota to the lead. The second question is "Can TOC deal with this kind of complicated problem effectively?" From the case study, we successfully answered the two preceding questions, presenting some findings about TOC problem solving strategy.

This paper presents the application of the Value Stream Mapping (VSM) as improvements tools at selected case study industry. A VSM process is the transformation of raw materials into finished goods and considered interaction of information, operators, machines and materials. The objectives of this project are to study critical wastes in production line and to recommended new design layout based on Lean Manufacturing techniques. Lean is about performance more with minimized the time, inventory, space, labor, and money. The tool of VSM used in this project successfully achieved its objectives to identify waste and proposing the solution for regarding problems. The lead time was reduced by half, the value added ratio was increased drastically and the cycle time was improved by minimize the handling time. VSM was a magical tool that cans reveals of all the data, problem, process, operation and overall flow of processes to make a certain product.

Abstract In this paper is presented a case study which has the goal to show the benefits of the application of a new approach for the calculation of load of the most loaded rolling element at the rolling bearing with the internal radial clearance. The calculation is based on the so-called load factors. By multiplication load factors with the value of the external radial load, the load which is transferred by the most loaded rolling element of the bearing is obtained. The case study is made for two types of bearings, the ball, and roller bearing. Obtained results were compared with the results obtained based on the calculation using some of the most commonly used methods so far. The analysis showed greater precision of the considered model with the same or much simpler application. For this reason, the proposed model is considered very suitable for practical application.
