As infrastructure projects get larger and more complex, innovation, which is highly dependent on collaboration and interactions among stakeholders, is critical to meet the challenges. Nevertheless, the existing literature is lacking in terms of studies into the spread of cooperative behaviors in infrastructure project innovations, on which project success is highly contingent. Hence, based on network science theories, this study aims to shed light on the cascade processes of cooperative behaviors in the evolution of collaborative innovations within infrastructure project networks and the impact of various network structures on the cascade effect. The results indicate that the number of initial innovation adopters is positively correlated with the role that the initial adopters play and the cascade effect of collaborative innovation on infrastructure projects. It is also shown that the cascade effect of collaborative innovations is contingent on project network structures. Furthermore, the results also suggest that network connection is positively correlated with cascade speed, scale, and time to reach a stable state. This study is the first to explore the cascade effect of stakeholders’ interactions vis-a-vis collaborative innovation in infrastructure projects. The findings could assist policy-makers and project managers in taking appropriate measures to encourage innovation in infrastructure projects.

 The paper analyzes structural alternatives in the implementation of infrastructure projects on the example of main gas pipelines. Particular attention is paid to the impact of various forms of procurement procedures on the course and result of the implementation of the infrastructure project as a whole. It is shown that the choice of procurement method can influence the structure of incentives and risks of the parties involved, as well as indirectly impact on the establishment of the market price setting, the level of product quality in the industry, and the complex cost of project implementation. Noting the extreme importance of the issues of ensuring the quality of the products used, the authors review the available structural alternatives for organizing quality control, show the possible mechanisms of the influence of the downtime of enterprises on reducing the level of industry competencies.

Implementation of change management is necessary for any construction projects especially infrastructure projects where government allocated billions of ringgit for the country development and the impact of change can be minimised if attended earlier. Nowadays, subcontractors were hired by the contractor to carry out the actual work as subcontracting is a very common practice in this industry. This research was initiated to identify the possible causes of change and then investigated the current status of change management implementation in Malaysia’s infrastructure project. A questionnaire survey was designed to collect data for this research. 102 out of 130 sets of questionnaires were collected from the targeted respondents. Then, a comprehensive analysis was conducted. It was discovered that “design change”, “addition/omission of scopes” and “ambiguities and mistakes in specifications and drawings” were ranked as top three factors contributing to change in Malaysia’ infrastructure projects. This research also discovered that the implementation status of change management was surprisingly high with 72.54% of the infrastructure projects implemented change management. Lastly, the subcontractors’ involvement in contractor’s change management process affected the project performance positively was confirmed in this research as the projects with subcontractor involvement had statistically significant better project performance in terms of time, cost and quality of work. The identification of the root cause for change in infrastructure project helps the future project practitioners to avoid such situation and more well-prepared for it. Subsequently, this research discovered the benefit of practising change management within the infrastructure projects and getting the subcontractor involvement statistically. The findings of this research could improve the project performance of Malaysia’s infrastructure projects.

The comfort of human life depends on the quality, size, and reliability of the infrastructure projects. In the infrastructure systems, rapid growth is found, where the economic and sustainable impact has become a topic of significant concern for policies and government officials. To achieve con-straints of sustainable development, all the policies and actions over the infrastructure project's life cycle must be assessed. Decision-makers have adopted approaches for economic, social, and en-vironmental initiatives through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Cost Analyses (LCCA) of infrastructure projects. The purpose of this review is to highlight the impact of per-forming LCA and LCCA in infrastructure projects. To achieve this goal, a systematic literature review methodology is adopted in which renowned databases, i.e., Web of Science, Science Direct, Emerald and Scopus were selected to extract the relevant literature. Using the PRISMA approach, 1251 publications were identified which were then filtered and 55 documents were included in the final review. In the extracted publications most, researchers were biased toward LCA and LCA individually, whereas few focused on integrated LCA and LCCA. The researchers assessed the costs and impact associated with the infrastructure project while there were less focused on the environmental cost. Besides this, techniques of economic, social, and environmental growth of infrastructure projects have been emphasized during the design phase because of substantial relations between infrastructure design and operation management. Moreover, a conceptual framework has been developed that will assist the decision-makers to consider the effects of LCA and LCCA on various aspects of the infrastructure project and how it impacts sustainability. In the last, a case study was performed to assess the developed framework with the incorporation of environmental impact cost.

With the advances in networking technologies, robots can use the almost unlimited resources of large data centers, overcoming the severe limitations imposed by onboard resources: this is the vision of Cloud Robotics. In this context, we present DewROS, a framework based on the Robot Operating System (ROS) which embodies the three-layer, Dew-Robotics architecture, where computation and storage can be distributed among the robot, the network devices close to it, and the Cloud. After presenting the design and implementation of DewROS, we show its application in a real use-case called SHERPA, which foresees a mixed ground and aerial robotic platform for search and rescue in an alpine environment. We used DewROS to analyze the video acquired by the drones in the Cloud and quickly spot signs of human beings in danger. We perform a wide experimental evaluation using different network technologies and Cloud services from Google and Amazon. We evaluated the impact of several variables on the performance of the system. Our results show that, for example, the video length has a minimal impact on the response time with respect to the video size. In addition, we show that the response time depends on the Round Trip Time (RTT) of the network connection when the video is already loaded into the Cloud provider side. Finally, we present a model of the annotation time that considers the RTT of the connection used to reach the Cloud, discussing results and insights into how to improve current Cloud Robotics applications.

This study conducted a comprehensive and systematic investigation of the influencing factors for collaborative innovation project (CIP) performance. First, a theoretical framework model was constructed, and then a structural equation model (SEM) was used for an empirical analysis of 199 CIPs. Furthermore, we divided the factors into tangible and intangible categories and considered the impact mechanism of nine typical factors on project performance. The results are as follows: (1) All nine factors had a significant positive impact on the performance of collaborative innovation projects, among which benefit distribution and collaborative innovation capability were the most important. (2) Benefit distribution, resource dependence, organizational climate, and collaborative innovation affected project performance, both directly and indirectly. (3) Effective communication, leadership support, knowledge sharing, and collaborative innovation ability only had a direct influence, while the incentive mechanism played only an indirect role. Finally, three suggestions were put forward on the idea of high-quality, sustainable development.

The relevance of information and the speed of its processing are of significant importance for high-tech industrial enterprises. To solve this problem, R&D departments are created within enterprises, but often all efforts are broken down by inefficient organizational structures. Purpose of the research– identify patterns that will ensure the most productive work with innovations. For the dissemination of new ideas in the enterprise, the role distribution of employees is more important. The impact of the ability to freely share information does not affect the results as much as the change in the ratio of different types of employees. The determined share of conservative employees (30-40% of the total number) allows us to determine the optimal ratio of employees who test innovative ideas for adequacy, in order to maximize the number of successfully accepted ideas by the team.

This paper models a default-free convertible facility to finance infrastructure projects in emerging Muslim countries. The mortgage is designed as a combination of an Islamic credit facility (allowing the collateralization of debt by the assets of the firm as espoused in Scott[32], Stulz and Johnson[36]) and inclusion of real warrants (as espoused in Green[12], Haugen and Senbet[15]) to mitigate the agency cost of debt discussed in Myers[27]. Numerical simulation is employed to endogenously solve for the rate of return, tenure and fractional ownership to be conveyed to financier upon conversion of the facility without resorting to any interest based (ribawi) index. Finally, sensitivity analysis is conducted to study the impact of exogenous variables and to reconcile with the existing mainstream finance literature such as Barclay and Smith[3], Stohs and Mauer [35] and Guedes and Opler [13].

Purpose The historic Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is an economic reform policy proposed by the Chinese Government that focuses on connectivity, improved collaboration and more robust economic relations. This paper aims to identify risks involved in BRI infrastructure project and establish a hierarchical relationship among them. Design/methodology/approach The methodology includes two phases, namely, identification of significant risks involved in the BRI project using systematic literature review and to develop a hierarchical relationship between the risks using interpretive structural modeling followed by the MICMAC analysis. Findings This work has identified the 11 risks of BRI infrastructure projects through academic literature. Based on the analysis, economic risk (R3), environmental risk (R1) and political risk (R2) are placed at level six in the ISM model and can significantly influence BRI infrastructure projects. These risks have high driving power, which exaggerates other risks. Research limitations/implications This study would help Engineering Procurements and Construction contractors in strategic decision-making select risk mitigation strategies and make robust and efficient infrastructure projects. However, additional factors may be considered, which are essential for the BRI infrastructure project. Originality/value This research’s novelty lies in the advancement of expertise in project risk assessment. This study contributes by identifying the most significant risks involved in the BRI project. The integrated ISM-MICMAC approach provides a macro picture of BRI project risks to formulate better strategies for its success.
