Self-Care Options for Resilient Educators (SCORE) is an 8-week, asynchronous virtual training program that teaches stress management skills relevant to educators’ job-related responsibilities and interpersonal interactions. From January-April 2020, 28 pre-service teachers participated in a quasi-experimental study of SCORE’s feasibility and preliminary efficacy. Volunteers chose to either complete SCORE concurrent with their teaching internship or to complete the same assessments for comparison purposes. Recruitment and implementation took place prior to COVID-19 disruptions. Then, six weeks into SCORE, the participants encountered unanticipated school closures and uncertainties associated with their internships (e.g., Would they be able to complete their internships and degree programs? Would they be eligible to teach the next school year?). Despite disruptions to their teaching internships, the remote format of SCORE allowed the study to continue and for participants to complete the full training. Pre-intervention to post-intervention changes in outcomes for the intervention group reflected large effect sizes for decreases in burnout and increases in teacher efficacy. There were medium effects for increased self-compassion and small-to-medium effects for increased cognitive reappraisal. However, pre-to-post intervention differences for the comparison group were relatively unchanged on most indicators. Results for secondary traumatic stress was remarkable, as the comparison group demonstrated a medium-to-large effect for an increase at post-intervention. This measure, however, revealed no effect in change for program participants. This finding is noteworthy and suggests that participation in SCORE or a similar program may help mitigate the potentially harmful effects of exposure to secondary trauma. Overall, this study’s results support arguments for including stress management training during pre-service teaching internships.

Background: Rehospitalization of heart failure patients is often considered the result of inadequate self-care yet only one study documents superior outcomes with better self-care. Aims: If inadequate self-care is related to hospitalizations, then hospitalized heart failure patients should have lower self-care skills than non-hospitalized patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate perceived social support and self-care characteristics of patients hospitalized with an exacerbation of heart failure. The self-care of heart failure index (SCHFI) and medical outcomes study of social support (MOS-SS) were the key instruments used in the research. Methods and results: This descriptive study used t tests and multiple regression to analyze the data. Results were compared with non-hospitalized heart failure patients in another study. Perceived social support ( t=−4.007, df=211, P<0.001) and self-care maintenance ( t=−3.343, df=220, P<0.002) scores were lower in the hospitalized participants than the comparison group. Self-care confidence was the only variable significantly related to perceived social support ( β=0.210, t=2.210, P<0.30). Conclusions: This study supports the premise that heart failure rehospitalizations are related to inadequate self-care.

AbstractNursing theories have been developed to provide guidance in clinical practice, so their knowledge by nurses is mandatory in order to provide advanced nursing care. This paper presents the relationships between the concepts and major assumptions of Henderson’s model and Orem’s theory and then their comparative analysis. Both, Henderson’s model and Orem’s theory of self-care deficit have a major impact, internationally, in education and research, but also in nursing practice, as a result of which their knowledge can open a new perspective on care, especially in countries where they are not well enough known.

Introduction: There are still many hypertensive patients with uncontrolled hypertension and experiencing barriers to self-care. This study attempts to increase motivation and intention in self-care management and self-efficacy through the implementation combination of home pharmacy care approach and Health Action Process Approach (HAPA). This study aimed to know the combination of the Home Care Pharmacy Approach and Nurse's HAPA on self-care management and self-efficacy in the elderly with hypertension. Methods: It was a pre-experimental study that used one group pretest post-test design approach with the population, 60 people. Inclusion criteria were respondents with average blood pressure ≥140/90 mmHg for two measurements. The sampling used a purposive sampling technique. The independent variable was the HAPA and Home Care Pharmacy. The dependent variable is self-care management and self-efficacy. Study instruments are questionnaire self-efficacy, self-care management, standard operating procedures, and HAPA Home Care Pharmacy. Data were analyzed by using paired t-test and Wilcoxon Sign Rank Test with significance paired α ≤ 0.05. Results: Statistical paired t-test showed there was an increase in self-care management (p = 0.006). Statistical Wilcoxon Sign Rank Test showed there was no influence on the home pharmacy care approach and HAPA on self-efficacy (p=0.753). Conclusions: It could be concluded that the implementation of collaboration in-home pharmacy care approach and HAPA improves self-care management. However, these interventions do not affect increasing self-efficacy. The excellent collaboration between healthcare providers will help patients maintain good health during treatment.
