Cosplay—costume role-play—has dramatically increased in popularity over the past 20 years in conjunction with the cultural institution of anime, comic book, manga, science fiction, and other related fandom conventions. Cosplay was prominently established in Japan before gaining attention in North America. In this article I analyze the significance of those Japanese origins in relation to the experience of a unique media environment. The aesthetics and practices of cosplay in Japan are fundamentally informed by a specific ontological characteristic of Japanese anime, manga, and ancillary forms: the static image. Of essential importance to these consumption practices—both materially and conceptually—is the phenomenon of the anime database: an archive of static images that is continually accessed for the purposes of understanding, consuming, and creating new media. Through a detailed discussion of Hiroki Azuma's conception of the moe database, Thomas Lamarre's discussion of the cel bank as a material requisite of the database, and Marc Steinberg's assessment of the media mix, I extend the phenomenological affects of this media environment and its static images to the act of cosplay posing—an act that aspires to create a mimetic and collective connection between cosplayers and particular media images. This exploratory platform will permit me to develop specific conceptions of Japan's complex media environment and its transformations of material forms into ephemeral consumption practices.

AbstractIn terms of infrastructure and technology, the media environment of Palestinians in the Occupied Territories developed extensively between the first and second Intifadas. Yet the media environment of the second Intifada was not necessarily more conducive to democratic change than that of the first. This paper argues that technological advances must be evaluated in their political contexts, and that the Palestinian context offers insight into what news media can do when they are not necessarily forums for an effective public sphere. For decades, Palestinians have assembled their media world out of other states' media, and a diverse collection of small and large media. This active process of assembly has itself constituted a productive field of political contestation. During the first Intifada, having no broadcast media or uncensored newspapers, Palestinians relied on small media like graffiti to evade Israeli restrictions. During the Oslo period, the Palestinian Authority (PA) established official Palestinian broadcast media, while Palestinian entrepreneurs opened broadcasting stations and Internet news sites. During the second Intifada, with Palestinian news media hampered by continued PA restrictions and intensified Israeli violence, small and new media enabled networks of care and connection, but were not widely effective tools for political organizing.

Journalists have traditionally played a crucial role in building public pressure on government officials to uphold their legal obligations under the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide. But over the past twenty years there has been radical change in the media landscape: foreign bureaus have been shuttered, young freelance journalists have taken over some of the work traditionally done by experienced foreign correspondents, and, more recently, the advent of social media has enabled people in conflict-affected areas to tell their own stories to the world. This essay assesses the impact of these changes on atrocity prevention across the different stages of the policy process. It concludes that the new media landscape is comparatively poorly equipped to raise an early warning alarm in a way that will spur preventive action, but that it is well-positioned to sustain attention to ongoing atrocities. Unfortunately, such later stages of a crisis generally provide the most limited policy options for civilian protection.

Media are central to the dynamics of protest and social movements. Contemporary social movements face a shifting environment composed of new media technologies and platforms that enable new identities, organizational forms, and practices. We review recent research focusing on the ways in which movements shape and are shaped by the media environment and the ways in which changes in the media environment have reshaped participation, mobilization, and impacts of activism. We conclude with the following recommendations for scholarship in this burgeoning area: move toward a broader conception of media in movements; expand engagement with scholarship in neighboring disciplines that study politics, media, and communication; develop new methodological and analytical skills for emerging forms of media; and investigate the ways in which media are enhancing, altering, or undermining the ability of movements to mobilize support, shape broader identities and attitudes, and secure new advantages from targets and authorities.

Nations across the globe are immersed in a technological revolution—intensified by the need to respond to COVID-19 issues. In order to be critical and responsible citizens in the current media ecosystem, it is important that students acquire and develop certain skills when consuming and producing information for and when communicating through the media. This is a major challenge that educational systems worldwide have to face. Hence, new curricula in media education to guide future teachers towards the successful acquisition of new media skills have been proposed. The aims of this work are to conduct a theoretical approach to this worldwide technological and media evolution in the past decade, to make an in-depth comparison between the Curriculum for teachers on media and information literacy published by the UNESCO (2011) and the publication of the new AlfaMed Curriculum for the training of teachers in media education (2021). This framework starts by providing an extensive analysis of the key elements of both curricula and of their corresponding modules, establishing, thus, a constructive comparison while updating them, according to the needs, changes, and realities that have taken place regarding digital literacy in the past decade. Finally, the chapter concludes with the detailing of the challenges and with proposals for teacher training in media and information literacy.

As an indispensable component of the media industry, the host industry is facing challenges from many aspects in the new media environment, which requires the announcers and hosts to give full play to their subjective initiative, finding the “opportunity” in the “crisis”, keeping up with the pace of the times, embracing the emerging media, and grasping the needs of the audience, to produce high-quality content, so as to transform “crisis” into “opportunity”.

“Bad news is good news,” they say. This is the mantra of journalistic practice, which still trapped in the logic of market-oriented media institution. Until today, Indonesian media system is still driven by capitalistic and political motives of many actors especially media owners and political figures. Their domination in Indonesian media environment results in the colonization of media networks by political networks and vice versa. Controversial statements from and conflicts among political elites are “good” food for the media, which would attract audiences to buy their newspapers, watch their television and click on their sensational headlines that functions as a bait. Mass media public spheres are filled with this type of communication. Good News from Indonesia (GNFI) comes onto the surface of Indonesian media landscape to counter the negativity that the current media system holds. This paper analyzes how GNFI delivers its messages and, as an alternative media, uses its various media platform, most of them are online-based, to balance the inequality of communication about Indonesia.

Religion and media are converging and frequently becoming a subject matter for news content and popular entertainment programmes in television and film, publishing, music as well as the new media. Religion, arguably has become part and parcel of the media environment today. In Malaysian context, during the millennium era, many locally produced ‘Islamic programmes’ started to gain popularity among Malaysian audience especially within the entertainment genre such as television drama. With the establishment of Malaysian first Islamic free-to-air television, TV Al Hijrah in 2010, this paper aims to understand the nature of Islamic content available on the station. The preliminary findings of this paper suggest that there are varieties of television programmes created and aired on TV Al Hijrah cutting across different genres meant for disseminating Islam as a way of life. Programmes available are mainly about showcasing the values of Islamic teaching and beliefs with the ultimate goal to highlight Islam as a beautiful and peaceful religion.

Internet is an ideal environment for emergence and popularization of the concept of free sources. Our analysis of this concept and the assessment of its impact on the media sphere confirmed clearly that the sphere of mass communication under the influence of globalization and the rapid evolution of information technologies is looking for the new models of activities of the media in order to keep its dominant position and influence in the structure of the modern information environment. The concept of free sources has a significant impact on the media sphere and promotes the realization of the need to change the approach to new media. At the same time the most radical interpretations of the concept, such as the idea of free media content, were not supported by the media industry.

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>Globalization affects the lives of individuals by showing themselves in many areas. The notion of globalization, which is particularly influential in the field of economy, politics and culture, has led to change and transformation through important influences both in the media and in the news cycle. In this context, with the globalization of the media, attempts have been made to create a uniform culture all over the world. Movies, TV programs, music video clips, have also changed in support of this argument. The global news cycle, which is in the hands of international agencies, causes an imbalance in the global flow as it is published due to the views of western imperialism of a certain capital. In this context, "news" is only in the hands of certain agencies; the dominance is maintained. In particular, although they are working to correct them on the effects of the global media and on the imbalances in the news cycle, they have not yet reached a sufficient level. Because of the international cycle of communication, the global media environment is in the hands of certain capitalists, imbalances are also felt in the environment. In this study, it will be discussed how the globalization phenomenon, especially the reflection of the media, and as a result, the news and other visual media messages affect the target audience. Following the identification of the situation, this structure will be referred to the work that can be described as "contradictions" and this particular emphasis on local / new media actors that may create alternatives will be addressed.</p><p><strong>Öz</strong></p><p>Küreselleşme, pek çok alanda kendini göstererek, bireylerin yaşamlarını etkilemektedir. Özellikle ekonomi, siyaset ve kültür alanında etkili olan küreselleşme kavramı, medyada ve haber döngüsünde de önemli etkileri vasıtasıyla değişim ve dönüşüme yol açmıştır. Buna kapsamda, medyanın küreselleşmesiyle birlikte, tüm dünya üzerinde tek tip bir kültür oluşturulması girişimleri de söz konusu olmuştur. Filmler, tv programları, müzik klipleri de bu savı destekler nitelikte değişimler göstermiştir. Uluslararası ajansların elinde olan küresel haber döngüsü ise belli bir sermayeye ait batı emperyalizmi görüşlerine bağlı olarak yayınlandığı için küresel akışta bir dengesizliğe sebep olmaktadır. Bu kapsamda, “haber” sadece belli ajansların elinde olup; söz konusu hakimiyet sürdürülmektedir. Özellikle, küresel medyanın etkilerinde ve haber döngüsündeki dengesizlikler üzerinde bunları düzeltmeye yönelik çalışmalar olsa da, henüz yeterli düzeye erişilememiştir. İletişimdeki uluslararası döngü, küresel medya ortamı belli sermayelerin elinde olduğu için ortamda dengesizlikler de kendini hissettirmektedir. Bu çalışmada küreselleşme olgusunun özellikle medyaya yansımaları ve bunun sonucunda haberlerin ve diğer görsel medya iletilerinin hedef kitleyi nasıl etkileyip, yönlendirdiği tartışılacak; durum tespiti ardından, bu yapıya “karşı çıkışlar” olarak nitelenebilecek çalışmalara değinilecek ve  alternatif oluşturabilecek yerel/yeni medya aktörlerinin bu husustaki önemi ele alınacaktır.</p>
