This paper presents a new mechatronics laboratory for students in the 5th semester of the mechatronics degree course at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. It is the aim of this teaching event to sharpen the appreciation of synergy effects in the development of mechatronic systems among the students. Despite of the great freedom in the development process, a concept has been evolved, which causes low running costs due to the combination of a model kit with rapid prototyping methods. A first pilot study of the laboratory starting in the winter term 2014 has shown that the students approach the task despite of the high level of difficulty with fun and dedication, especially because of the wide solution space which was unknown for them from previous lectures.

BACKGROUND Applications (apps) for smartphones and tablets are part of our daily life. Such apps give new opportunities for the health sector to improve the well-being of individuals and to support research. Good application development practices are essential for the success of an application. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to assess the current state of software engineering expertise in an academic sport science setting and to identify recommendations for successful project implementation. METHODS We conducted a questionnaire study to get insights in the actual development process for apps in a typical academic setting. The participants were (33 (SD=7) years, 58% were female) were recruited within the sport science faculty at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The major topics of the survey developed by a multidisciplinary team were demographics, project information, development process, requirements and features, security, technology, and dissemination. RESULTS The questionnaire gave us a good overview on the heterogeneity of development projects and potential shortcomings. These shortcomings exist along the complete development lifecycle (e.g. development methodology, requirements engineering). CONCLUSIONS Based on these findings, we have proposed recommendations to improve the success probability and the sustainability of app development in a research context and give orientation on the potential roles that sport scientists should take.

Owing to the growing demand for complex in situ experiments, the handling of synchrotron experiments has become increasingly complicated. The control system at the XAS beamline of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology synchrotron was automated based on a user-driven development cycle. By combining intelligent remote-controlled hardware and highly integrated software layers it is now possible to record data with a high level of reproducibility, eliminating human malperformance. The additional advantage of automation is the possibility of real 24/7 operation without tiring. This paper focuses on the options of optimization and enhancement in the data acquisition.

Abstract In socialistic countries, customer satisfaction and the market conditions were not of high priority: Some selected parts of the market products were of satisfactory costs and quality to customers. Quality and costs of a product decide on its success in the world-wide market. The wishes and expectations of the customer for a high-quality and low-priced product continue to grow, however, with the desire for faster availability of this product. The customer determines also the delivery time and other competitive factors as the durability of the product. At present the trend goes towards shorter product life cycles, which in turn requires reduced time spent on the product development. With these complex market requirements and growing diversity of the products the engineer faces new challenges in his development tasks. It can be paraphrased as follows: In reduced lifecycles a quality-assured and advantageous product has to be developed despite increasing complexity of the design and demands for reduction of material used, manpower and monetary spending. For the solution of this complex problem the following suggestions are tested and implemented: • Structured design process for the development process, • Simultaneous work where ever possible during the development stages, • Employment of modern resources for the product development, • Use of information technology and • Implementation of rapid prototyping for models and in secondary manufacturing processes. An important research field at the Department of Mechanical Engineering Design at the Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg is research and further development of productive procedures and tools for the realization of a computer integrated product development process. This process includes the effective application of technologies to produce the prototypes for presentation, producibility analysis and production. Of particular interest is the closed process chain (loop) from Solid Modeling via Rapid Prototyping and 3D-Digitizing where the entry point of this process chain depends on the needs of the application or particular interest of the innovating company. Information for faster and more competitive preparation, verification and Re-Engineering of existing and established products, which have to be adjusted to the world-market needs, will be made available. The results of this applied research offer opportunities to display new developed products for the lagging industries in the former East Germany, and furthermore arranging for necessary venture capital to produce the product, to gain information about possible suppliers and manufacturing opportunities in order to minimize the investors’ risks of an enterprise.

Abstract Sports development involves important aspects that collaborate towards the achievement of a high level sports performance. Parental support is one such fact to be considered in Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD), capable of benefiting or harming athletes if not adequately administered. This study registers and discusses the importance of parental support in female Artistic Gymnastics, from the perspective of Brazilian gymnasts who have participated in the Olympic Games. The method used was Oral History with the technique known as oral testimony. The participants of the study were the ten Brazilian gymnasts who represented Brazil in the Olympic Games from when the country first participated in this championship, in 1980, up to the best Brazilian classification in Athens (2004), totaling ten gymnasts (a sample comprising 100% or the research universe). Testimony analysis was conducted through crossanalysis. The study shows unanimity among the gymnasts in regards to the importance of parental support in the sports development process. In addition to reinforcing the results found in the literature, the testimonies provide details of the relationships between the gymnasts and their families for deeper reflections around the subject, a distinguishing feature of studies with oral testimonies.

To avoid use errors when handling medical equipment, it is important to develop products with a high degree of usability. This can be achieved by performing usability evaluations in the product development process to detect and mitigate potential usability problems. A commonly used method is cognitive walkthrough (CW), but this method shows three weaknesses: poor high-level perspective, insufficient categorisation of detected usability problems, and difficulties in overviewing the analytical results. This paper presents a further development of CW with the aim of overcoming its weaknesses. The new method is called enhanced cognitive walkthrough (ECW). ECW is a proactive analytical method for analysis of potential usability problems. The ECW method has been employed to evaluate user interface designs of medical equipment such as home-care ventilators, infusion pumps, dialysis machines, and insulin pumps. The method has proved capable of identifying several potential use problems in designs.

AbstractThe B3 superfamily is a plant-specific family, which involves in growth and development process. By now, the identification of B3 superfamily in pineapple (Ananas comosus) has not reported. In this study, 57 B3 genes were identified and further phylogenetically classified into five subfamilies, all genes contained B3 domain. Chromosomal localization analysis revealed that 54 of 57 AcB3 genes were located on 21 chromosomes.Collinearity analysis indicated that the segmental duplication was the main event in the evolution of B3 gene superfamily and most of them were under purifying selection. Moreover, there were 7 and 39 pairs of orthologous B3s were identified between pineapple and Arabidopsis or rice, respectively, which indicated the closer genetic relationship between pineapple and rice. Most genes had cis-element of abscisic acid, ethylene, MeJA, light, and abiotic stress. qRT-PCR showed that the expression level of most AcB3 genes were up-regulated within 1 d after ethephon treatment and expressed high level in flower bud differentiation period in stem apex. This study provide a comprehensive understanding of AcB3s and a basis for future molecular studies of ethephon induced pineapple flowering.

This study aims to analyze the acceptance of students towards the implementation of the Basic Principles of Islam (CTU 101) course curriculum which is one of the Islamic Study Courses in UiTM (MARA Institute of Technology). The focus of this study is to investigate the level and relationship between students’ acceptance in terms of content, teaching and evaluation. This survey study involved 300 students who were randomly chosen and a set of questionnaires was utilized as the instrument of study. A pilot study was conducted among 30 students to determine the reliability of instrument used by using Alpha Cronbach with value 0.960, and value 0.964. A set of questionnaire consists of part A (demography background of participants) and part B, C, D and E (questions of variables) was used to collect data for this study. Data were analyzed by using Software SPSS version 17.0 (Statistic Packages For Sosial Science) and reported by using of descriptive statistics of min, percentage and median, and also by making inferences to analyzed the relationship among the variables. The findings of study show that participants positively accepted CTU 101 course with content min average of content 4.1733 (high), teaching 4.0693 (high) and evaluation 3.9996 (high). Besides that, correlation Pearson analysis was used to analyzed the relationship among the variables and for this study, it was found that significant relationship between the acceptance of participants with the content, teaching and evaluation aspect of CTU 101 course.  The high score of each aspect or variable and the significant relationships show that students positively accepted the course. However, a few aspects of the course should be given attention and a few improvements should be done in order to give students good perception towards Islamic Study Course.   Keyword: Acceptance, student, Basic Principle of Islam (CTU 101).

The objective of this article was to present and describe the project methodology implemented in the development of five throwing frames for paralympic athletes. The process was divided into project different phases / stages, which, although following a logical sequence of development, include activities performed simultaneously. The athletes and technicians were invited to participate in technical meetings with the research group at INT. These technical meetings were held throughout the project, so that athletes and their technicians could interact with the project team of the Three-Dimensional Models Laboratories (LAMOT) and Ergonomics Laboratory (LABER) athe Industrial Design Division at the National Institute of Technology. 3D motion captured and laser scanning captured with 1D anthropometric measurements were collected in order to provide information to the bank usability designer and anthropometric dimensions of the athletes. With this information, the LAMOT / DVDI project team developed project alternatives that were presented to the athletes and technicians. The chosen project frame alternative allowed greater rigidity to the seat. Athletes participated in all subsequent stages of prototype development and final testing in use. The conclusion was that the methodology provided a logical and comprehensible structuring of the product development process for all the actors involved in the project, even from different areas of activity, and thus, could contribute in a harmonic and productive way to the final result.
