This paper presents preliminary data on a series of building comfort experiments conducted in the field. We performed physical in-situ measurements and solicited responses from 409 (184 female; 225 male) university students in six different classrooms at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst during three seasons (fall, winter and spring). Our questions focused on student perception of comfort in varied environmental (temperature and humidity, and air speed) conditions. We collected records of student academic performance in the classes, correlating their comfort perceptions to their test scores. Statistical analysis of classroom environmental variables, thermal satisfaction, and student scores suggest that by enhancing thermal comfort, we can improve academic performance.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is fourfold: first, to analyse the relationship between executive functions and academic performance; second, to identify the level of prediction executive functions have on academic performance; third, to determine the correlation between executive functions and academic performance; and fourth, to compare executive functions based on the level of academic performance. Design/methodology/approach The sample composed of 175 university students aged between 18 and 36 years (M=21.49, SD=3.22). The EFECO scale, the average student grade and a scale based on the diagnostic criteria for ADHD were used as measurement instruments. Findings Difficulties in executive functions: Difficulties in working memory (r=−0.30, p=<0.01) and difficulties in conscious supervision of behaviour (r=−0.29, p⩽0.01) have an inversely proportional relationship to academic performance (the greater the deficit of executive functions, the lower the academic performance). The regression analysis showed that executive functions explain 31 per cent of the variance of academic performance (χ2(25)=43.81, p <0.001). The study found that there is a relationship between all the executive functions and students’ behaviour in a medium to large magnitude. Research limitations/implications A limitation of this study was the size of the sample as it is not representative of the country. Nevertheless, the correlation among the variables studied here has the necessary magnitude for the proposed correlations to be found. Nonetheless, it is necessary that we perform a study with a larger number of participants in order to achieve adequate extrapolation of the results. Practical implications Data found in this study suggest that low academic performance of university students is related to a lower functionality of their executive functions. Originality/value The originality of the research lies in relating specific concepts of neuropsychology to explain the academic performance of university students. The research findings allow us to project new studies to improve the executive functions for the benefit of the university student.

Universities play an important role in society. Through them professionalization is achieved in different areas that, in one way or another, contribute to the development of a nation. The professional life of a graduate depends in part on the effectiveness, efficacy and efficiency of the university processes and the performance presented during their student life. This study analyzes the variables that characterize student academic performance as they contribute to an adequate professional practice of a graduate in Accounting and Auditing. Through a quantitative and qualitative analysis, graduates in the Accounting and Auditing major from 2007 to 2017 from the Politécnica Salesiana University, an Ecuadorian university, are analyzed. Variables such as: autonomy, marital status, province of origin, family environment, salary, experience and work area, among others are studied. The information collected was obtained through the application of telephone surveys and data extracted from the university computer system; subsequently, this information is evaluated through contingency tables or crosstabs and the case-control study method. Among the main results, it is observed that most graduates do work in their profession, but with a modest remuneration, except for those who work in the banking sector. It is also observed that the quality of the professional practice of a graduate has a direct relationship with their student academic performance and that this academic performance has a relationship with the economic conditions, time availability, study days and marital status that they maintained during their student life. Most graduates do work in the area related to their profession.

The article reflects the results of a two-year study of educational and physical activity of university students. The article deals with the concept of activity, its types - physical and intellectual activity of students, approaches to indicators of physical activity, on the basis of which the components of physical activity are identified; it presents national and foreign studies of the relationship of types of activity. The article demonstrates the results of investigating the relationships between the manifestations of the types of activity of students and athletes studying at the university. The most significant relationships are found between the regulatory component and the result of educational activity; the potential of educational activity and the operational component of physical activity. Analysis of the relationships allows to make a conclusion that academic performance has links with most components of educational activity in both groups. The revealed connections between the components of physical and educational activiies are specific for athletes and students in terms of their number, orientation and strength.

The study investigated the relationship between stress and academic performance among government-sponsored undergraduate students from the University of Nairobi in Kenya. The mediating roles of the students’ age, gender, locus of control, level and course of study in the relationship between stress and academic performance were also examined. The sample consisted of 319 male and 265 female students selected using stratified random sampling techniques, from all the six colleges of the university. The study was carried using a cross-sectional survey design involving levels one to five of the academic programs. Data was collected using questionnaires that measured stress and locus of control. Academic performance was assessed from the students’ academic transcripts. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analyses. Two-way and three-way chi- square statistics were used to test the statistical significance of the hypothesis.. The analyses were done using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) computer program. Regression analysis was conducted to find out how the confounding variables contributed to the relationship between stress and academic performance. Results showed that most of the students (64.4%) reported that they experienced between moderate to high levels of stress while just over a third (35.6%) reported low stress levels. The relationship between stress and academic performance was statistically significant (χ2=9.49, N=584, df=4, p=0.048). The relationship between stress level and academic performance was significant within 19 to 22 years, 23 to 26 years, males, females, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, levels one and four of study, internal locus of control, and external locus of control. Regression analysis showed that the higher the stress level, the poorer is the academic performance. However, only course/college appears to have statistically significant effect on the relationship between stress and academic performance. The cofounding effect on the stress and academic performance is complex and needs further investigation. The findings indicate the need for relevant authorities to institute programs that will lower the experience and effects of stress among university students. Further research is recommended to investigate the areas where the results were not significant.

The student’s academic performance is an essential factor indicator. There are several factors that could influence on such performance, so the objective of this work was to analyze the relationship between the academic performance and different factors such as physical activity, alcohol and tobacco consumption in students of the University Center of Biological and Agricultural Sciences (CUCBA) of the Universidad de Guadalajara (UdeG). To this aim, 200 both genders students were asked to consent to apply an inquiry: The academic performance was classified into three levels: Excellent / Very Good (90-100), Good (80-89) and Regular / Bad (<80). The academic status was determined and grouped into four categories: graduates, not graduates, active and irregular. The results were analyzed by Mean Test, Standard deviation, Student's t-test and Chi-squared test. 41% of the enrolled subjects were women and 59% men. The results showed that smoking students had a lower academic performance (p <0.05) than non-smokers, however, in the present study it was not found a significant relationship between alcohol consumption or physical activity and academic performance. It is intended to contribute with proposals tending to strengthen healthy lifestyles and to improve the educacional indicators of this university community.
