To improve the quality of a website, many principles or guidelines have been suggested in the literature. However, the application of related principles is not a straightforward issue. It requires the web developer with high level of self-awareness to continuously review his own works and to justify the design based on related web design principles. The web developer should behave as a reflective practitioner for creating a high-quality website which fulfilled web design principles in various aspects. However, reflection cannot be implicitly assumed as an inborn ability. Certain experiences or training must be provided so as to enable the web designer to develop high level of self-reflection. In this connection, this chapter introduces a series of assessment for learning strategies with self- and peer-assessment components for transforming a web developer into a reflective practitioner. Detailed implementation, its effectiveness and participants' opinions of the self- and peer-assessment strategy of a case study will be reported.

Developing usable products becomes more and more important for software developers. Developing web applications it’s more challenging than developing desktop applications due to the various users that will interact with the final product. Satisfying users’ expectations becomes a very difficult task, as usability proves to be a very complex goal to achieve in the context of increased productivity targets in software engineering process. The present chapter focuses on the idea of rethinking the concept of usability moving from the traditional view of usability expressed in the internal characteristics of the product towards usability understood as deriving from the quality of interactions between humans, their work and the web design product. Usability is not only an add-on or a final result in the design process but it is embedded as a main concern within the design process itself. In order to build usable products, a great attention should be oriented to users and their needs, and this can be a very challenging task for software developer teams. In this chapter we will describe an interdisciplinary approach, based on applying social sciences techniques and methods that can be helpful in overcoming the difficulties in understanding the users. We will provide a short description of the proposed methods, a guide in applying these methods and a framework that integrates each of the proposed methods into the corresponding step of the web product development life cycle. The chapter ends with the presentation of two case studies showing the applicability of the proposed solution in real design contexts.

This chapter is the result of a two years effort to design a template aiming at standardizing, as much as such a task is feasible, the evaluation of Web sites. It is the product of a few publications in international conferences and journals. A thorough review of the international literature on the subject led the authors to conclude there is a very large number of opinions, thoughts and criteria from different professionals involved, directly or indirectly, with the process of designing a good Web site. To make matters even more complicated there are a number of different terms used by various scholars, scientists and professionals around the world that often refer to similar, if not the same, attributes of a Web site. However, it seems that all these differences could boil down to a systematic approach, here called evaluation template, of 53 points that the design strategies of the Web sites should be checked against. This template was tested on a significant number (232) of Web sites of Greek companies and proved it can be used to evaluate the quality of Web sites not only by technology experts but by non-experts alike. The evaluation template, suggested here, is by no means the solution to the problem of standardizing the process of evaluating a Web site but looking at other work done on the subject worldwide it is a step ahead.

Background Studies involving autistic adults have often focused on negative outcomes and quality of life ratings. Aims This study provides a different viewpoint by examining the perspectives of autistic men who consider themselves to be successful. Methods Data were gathered from 10 men who shared their experiences and perceptions regarding their journey to achieve success. Self-determination theory provided a useful lens for examining the men’s narratives and understanding the factors that led to their success. Results Analysis of interviews revealed four main themes: (1) being my own self, (2) a competent professional, (3) solving problems in a neurotypical world, and (4) relating and connecting. These themes reflect the men’s perception of their own self-determination including their autonomy, competence, and relatedness with others. Conclusions The men’s sense of success was derived from their ability to achieve competence in their work, act without help or influence from others and demonstrate a high level of self-awareness and self-reflection. Despite this, many continued to experience difficulty in the social areas of their lives. Implications: These findings suggest that self-determination theory may present an alternative and more positive means of enacting support programs for autistic individuals, and males in particular.

Abstract— Utilization of information and communication technology (ICT) in education becomes an absolute thing to do, in order to improve the quality of education, service effectiveness and become a strength for higher education institutions. One application of aspects of ICT in college is academic web. In the Faculty of Engineering University Singaperbangsa Karawang, academic information system is known by the web SIAKAD (Academic Information System) Faculty of Engineering Unsika. Web SIAKAD FT Unsika aims to manage data and facilitate the integration associated with academic information, but on its application may occur mismatch between procedures established in the web with its implementation. Therefore, please note the behavior of SIAKAD web users, also conducted testing of the academic web interface. This is considering that the web SIAKAD FT Unsika is still in development stage. Stages in this study started from a preliminary study of the use of the web SIAKAD and continued with research on the usability of the web SIAKAD. From the results of the study note that there are five dimensions that affect web usability SIAKAD FT Unsika that must be repaired by the web developers, namely Responsiveness (RS), Web design (WD), Assurance (A), Readability (RD), and Navigation (N).Keywords— academic web; usability; university

The paper shows that comparative analysis of Russian mentality development relevancy is due to the decline in indicators of social orientation of state policy and quality of public administration at the end of 20th – beginning of 21th century and in living standards, etc. The development and current state of Russian, Chinese and Latin American mentalities viewed from the standpoint of transdisciplinary ethno-functional analysis was compared with the aim to identify possible connection of this development with accelerated growth of various socio-economic indicators of the regions under study. The results of this comparative analysis of the above mentioned collective subjects development allowed assuming that the growth of their various socio-economic indicators is determined by the high level of self-reflection of ethno-integrating components of archaic, pre-modern and modern elements. The analysis of Russian mentality historic genesis detected the suppression — and in modern times — the low level of ethno-integration of the archaic component. It allows concluding that the decline in social indicators of Russia's development in the late 20th – early 21th centuries results from the insufficient integration of this component in the Russian mentality. It also makes for arguing that suppressing of the ethno-integrating archaic component in terms of Russian mentality genesis may act as a psychological condition for the formation of the mobilization type of development of Russia in general.

One important aspect of consumer relationships is trust. Conducting business on the Web is relatively new compared to traditional business and many of the factors related to consumer trust related to the Web remained unexplored. To increase our understanding about trust building on the Internet, this article studies trust with a focus on its relationship to Web design characteristics, specifically perceived quality of presentation, perceived ease of navigation, and several user attributes: prior internet experience, Web users’ self efficacy, and gender differences. A research model is proposed that builds upon prior research on trust. A survey is developed based on the constructs and relationships in the model. The data analysis and results confirm five out of eight of the hypotheses associated with the model. Theoretical and practical implications are provided.

Purpose: This article examines how 34 teachers self-assessed their work with the nine Assessment for Learning (AfL) strategies in teaching and their own suggestions for improvement as evidenced by the reflective statements given on reflection forms. Design/Approach/Methods: The sample was a group of 34 teachers from 10 primary schools and 10 kindergartens who have participated in the project. School Development Officers (SDOs) were assigned to conduct class observations in the schools, in which they recorded whether the teachers had used the AfL strategies in teaching. The SDOs would also share and discuss the comments with the teachers who had returned the self-reflection forms in which they wrote their feedback on the research questions. Findings: The findings show that teachers in kindergartens and teachers in primary schools might have different emphases on the nine AfL strategies in teaching. Their own suggested rooms for improvement in practicing AfL skills have provided insights for enhancing teaching effectiveness. Originality/Value: We propose that reflective practices can generate a “reflective spiral” of planning, acting, observing, and then reflecting. The study shows that reflective practitioners become professional experts who are able to assure the quality of teaching by self-enhancement and self-improvement.
