This chapter looks into the concept of culture and its impacts on travellers' online information search behaviour. The study is focused on two culturally diametric countries: United Kingdom and China (Hofstede, 2001) and they have been selected as case studies, representing values from the Western and the Asian cultures. In order to examine the effects of culture on online search behaviours, the research adopted a qualitative approach, and data was collected through interviews in order to enhance and elaborate the understanding on the subject studied. The results of this study show that culture influences the travellers' behaviour in the online environment, up to a certain extent, and as a result of this influences, different behavioural patterns between the British and the Chinese travellers emerged. Moreover, these findings bring implications for the marketers aiming at the British and the Chinese tourists, and they highlight the need to adopt different strategies in designing and marketing their tourism products for these two particular markets.

This study investigates children information search behaviour to inform about their search characteristics. The study uses a qualitative approach by observing and noting the children’s searching process. A total of 30 children aged 7-9 years participated in this study. The unobtrusively observation sessions were video-recorded on children's searching process via the Web. Probing interviews were used to gather understanding on how the children perceive information trustworthiness. The data was analysed using thematic coding approach. The finding highlighted two main characteristics of children search: Credible Searcher and Convenience Searcher. The children in general could gauge information trustworthiness and have confidence with regard to the relevance, reliability and the credibility of the resources. The children do not consider source reputation and currency as an important criterion when seeking information. This study contributes to a better understanding of information trustworthiness as reflected in young children’s information seeking processing.

The use of online information sources in most professions is widespread, and well researched. Less understood is how the use of these sources vary across the strata within a single profession, and how question context affects search behaviour. Using the dental profession as a case of a highly stratified discipline, we examine search preferences for sources by professional strata among dentists in a practice-based network. Results show that variation exists in information search behaviour across professional strata of dental clinicians. This study highlights the importance of addressing information literacy across different levels of a profession. Findings also underscore that search behaviour and source preference vary with perceived question relevance.

PurposeThe purpose of the current study is to theorize and apply a socio-technological model – the powerful influence of social determinants in conditioning the effects of information attention on social outcomes. Fundamentally, this study is motivated by the idea that the social determinants of information flow can be used as a predictive tool to inform public socio-policy decisions.Design/methodology/approachThis study draws upon digital disparity literature and uses publicly available Google search queries in exploring online information attention and its relationships to the HIV/AIDS diffusion in US cities. This study’s secondary data collected from extant sources is used to draw attention to a holistic urban ecology under which online search attention represents the variation of information access at the aggregate level.FindingsThe main finding shows that online information attention, as indicated by search trend, is far from being a simple predictor, but operates in complex interactions with existing social environments. A bivariate correlation between AIDS information search and AIDS diffusion rate was found to be significant. However, predictive multivariate models displayed robust effects of social contextual variables, such as income level and racial composition of cities, in moderating the effect of online search information flow.Practical implicationsThe importance of these insights is discussed for reducing socio-health disparities at the macro-social level, and policymakers and health administrators are recommended to incubate supportive online infrastructure as an effective preventive measure at the time of a crisis.Originality/valueThe unique contribution of this study is the premise that looks at the aggregate-ecological contour of cities within which the potential benefits of information occur, instead of examining the isolated function of mediated information per se. In this vein, online information search, in lieu of the exposure to mass media message that is often measured via self-reported items, is a particularly unique and fruitful area of future inquiry that this study promotes.

BACKGROUND People have access to a massive volume of up-to-date health information processed by various search engines. Before seeing a doctor, people are used to seek information about identification and support available (e.g. doctors, support centers. forum discussions etc.) for their disorder/s online. Researchers have shown that Internet search queries contain much valuable information about the disequilibrium dynamics of various economics activities (e.g. employment, consumption). OCD as a disorder steals much of the valuable time, energy and effort in day-to-day work life and scholars argues that patients diagnosed with OCD may have higher unemployment rates and lower average income. Except for a handful of work examining the relationship between various disorders (e.g. cancer) and online search volume data, the direct linkage between online search behaviour of seeking support for OCD and unemployment in the United States has been completely ignored in the literature. OBJECTIVE The objective of this paper is to examine the impact of online search behaviour of identifying and seeking support for OCD on unemployment level of the United States at aggregate data and age category level. METHODS This paper analyzes 50 closely related online search terms on identifying and seeking support for OCD from March 2006 to June 2019. Ordinary least squares technique is used to identify the significance of the impact of search behaviour on the unemployment levels of the United States. After screening for instrumentality, a reduced version of regression is derived after treating for multicollinearity among regression variables. In order to eliminate the effect of searches made by people other than employed people who have subsequently been unemployed, a diagnostic regression is run. RESULTS The findings show that online search behaviour of identifying and seeking support for OCD significantly impacts unemployment level of the United States at overall regression level (p<0.01, R^2=73%) and age category level regressions (p<0.01, average R^2=66%). Moreover, the diagnostic test confirms that the regression on aggregate data and age category level data properly explains the underlying relationship as hypothesized because the coefficient of Google search queries driven (the effect) by employed population is positive and highly significant in explaining the unemployment level of the United States (p<0.01, average R^2=90%). CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study are helpful for policymakers and regulators in providing useful inputs for designing and administering programms on prevention and counseling OCD diagnosed working population of the United States. In particular, this paper is helpful in identifying the age categories of male and female employed population who are searching and seeking support on OCD. The government institutions in the USA must utilize online search queries for effective analysis and identification of different age category of people who are in need of support. Since search query data are available at country-level and regional level, this could easily be done by IT rather than population surveys that are costly and time consuming.

The aim of this study was to examine the impact of cultural differences on students’ information-seeking, management and evaluation practices in an online information and communication technology (ICT) environment. The study was conducted at a Zimbabwean university on postgraduate students (male and female) (N=156), employing the questionnaire technique as data collection instrument. While there is a dearth of empirical studies on the use of ICT in Zimbabwe, the extant literature in this field shows a significant difference between the success and failure in the use of ICT sources for learning purposes among students in developing and developed countries. This study is premised on the proposition that “information seeking” is socioculturally bounded and the successful use of online information sources is significantly linked to the students’ perceptions of particular ICT platforms and how they are configured to facilitate specific information search outcomes. After the data collection process, the computer analysis software programme, Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), was employed to obtain the cross-tabulations and chi-squared statistical tests. The main findings of the study show a statistically significant difference in students’ information-seeking practices. The study identified the importance of students’ cultural contexts in the successful use of ICT and concludes that cultural differences influence online information-seeking practices among students. The study recommends that the impact of cultural differences be considered when students are introduced to the use of ICT as an information-seeking tool and suggests that future studies, both qualitative and quantitative, be pursued to improve students’ information-seeking practices to enhance their success.

Providing well-being and wellness services are growing trends in tourism. Well-being tourism has considerable potential as well with respect to tourism in rural areas. The objective of this article is to study well-being tourists as a heterogeneous market segment via activity-based segmentation in rural areas. Their online information search behaviour is compared to that of other market segments to ensure that the various segments can be targeted online and to elaborate upon the information search behaviour of various activity segments. Using cluster analysis, three different rural tourist segments can be identified in Finland based on their well-being activities. The results show the possibilities for activity-based segmentation in understanding the preferences for well-being services. The study demonstrates that the various rural well-being activity segments differ from each other based on socio-demographics and in how they use the Internet to search for information, book their holidays and write online reviews. All of these differences have managerial implications when it comes to developing rural well-being products, and they also demonstrate the possibilities for activity segmentation in rural well-being tourism.
