Phenomena of conflicts among students may lead to critical situations, like isolation, violence and school dropout, especially if poorly managed. In Italy, a group of professionals, lawyers and mediators, has developed a training program called School of Mediation, Mediation for School (SMS) to provide students with more adequate and modern tools to manage their relationships with peers and adults. The SMS project originates from the belief that what determines the most crisis situations are not discriminations or conflicts themselves, but rather the way we deal with them. During the training program professionals have resorted to mediation tools and aikido, a Japanese martial art, to engage students both intellectually and physically. The project, to date, has involved more than 200 students with important results.

The attention sustainability and its impact of social status in the class are current issues concerning the field of education are the reasons for delay in assimilating the learning material and early school dropout. Behind both of those problems stand psychological causes such as low attention sustainability, poor communication skills and lack of positive environment. The presented article aims to prove that sustainability of attention directly influences the social status of students in the class, and hence their overall development and the way they feel in the group. Making efforts to increase students’ attention sustainability could lead to an increase in the social status of the student and hence the creation of a favorable and positive environment for the overall development of the individual.

The book of Jeremiah reflects a particular period in the history of Judah, certain theological perspectives and a particular portrayal of the prophet Jeremiah. Covenant theology played a major role in Jeremiah’s view of life and determined his expectations of leaders and ordinary people. He placed high value on justice and trustworthiness, and people who did not adhere to this would in his view bear the consequences of disobedience to Yahweh’s moral demands and unfaithfulness. The prophet expected those in positions of leadership to adhere to certain ethical obligations as is clear from most of the nouns which appear in Jeremiah 5:1–6. This article argues that crisis situations in history affect leaders’ communication, attitudes and responses. Leaders’ worldviews and ideologies play a definitive role in their responses to crises. Jeremiah’s religious views are reflected in his criticism and demands of people in his society. This is also true as seen from the way the people and leaders in Judah responded to the prophet’s proclamation. Jeremiah 5:1–6 emphasises that knowledge and accountability are expected of leaders at all times, but in particular during unstable political times.

Because the preadolescent's inner world is still undeveloped and insufficiently enriched by the experience of experiencing critical situations that stand in the way of meeting important needs, his activism, aimed at overcoming them, is not stimulated. Therefore, in difficult situations the preadolescent includes the defense mechanisms. When the mechanisms prove to be inefficient, the body instinctively looks for a way out and often finds it in the external environment. Psychoactive substances can be used as external procedures to defend against the psychotraumatic situation and the vulnerability of preadolescents to drug use is directly related to the fact that drugs have become accessible, the consumption being often associated with the pressure exerted by the group of friends.

This chapter traces the racial and legal changes that shaped the landscape of Mississippi by 1970. Into this context, the chapter places the story of the state-wide job training program Strategic Training and Redevelopment, sponsored by the Mississippi Catholic Church. It explores the way in which the diocese and Catholic staff by turn helped and hindered the operation of STAR, but often perpetuated a racial paternalism that characterised the program. The chapter also explores the relationship between the war on poverty and the state AFL-CIO, led by Claude Ramsay. Ultimately the story of STAR illustrates how class divisions and racial discrimination hampered the program, while the changes implemented by Nixon’s administration unravelled the foundations of the war on poverty.

AbstractWhile the Qurʾan approves of ascetic practices such as fasting and vigils, it does not insist on them. Nonetheless, Sloterdijk’s You Must Change Your Life may help us to identify an ascetic “training program” within the Qurʾan. This has as its main elements: hijra, in the sense of an ongoing attitude of separation and exile; jihad, in the sense of training for and engaging in combat, again as an ongoing attitude; and poverty, not in the sense of voluntarily undergoing deprivation, but of benefaction on a heroic scale recalling pre-Islamic Arabia. How do we contextualize this program and the Qurʾanic environment in general? While the historical narratives about Muhammad and the early community have plenty to say about these elements, they do not adequately account for the way they appear in the Qurʾan. We propose instead to use the chronological order of suras first proposed by Weil and Nöldeke, not to establish chronology but to identify diverse communities of reception within the Qurʾan, specifically with regard to poverty and generosity. The result is a simultaneous contrast and balance between values and practices based on reciprocity on the one hand, and requital/ reward on the other. Asceticism thus has a central role in a uniquely Qurʾanic system of economic and moral exchange.

Background: The aim was to assess the effects of a training program inclusive of contact sports and counseling on school dropout, quality of life (QoL) and psychopathologic symptoms in the youth with a history of school dropout and psychopathic personality traits. Methods: The Experimental Group (EG) consisted of 32 subjects (male 90.6%; age 19.6±4.3 years); the Control Group (CG) consisted of an equal number matched for gender and age with the same psychological features. At the beginning of the experimental Training Program (T0), both cohorts were assessed by a diagnostic psychiatric interview (SCID ANTAS), the Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) to evaluate QoL, the Psychopathy Checklist - Revised (PCL-R) for the assessment of psychopathic traits, the Self Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ) to measure general psychopathology. At the end of the program (T1), the coorths were evaluated by SF-12 and SRQ. Results: Twenty-seven subjects in the EG (84.4%) completed the course and underwent the evaluation at T1. The SF-12 score significantly increased from T0 to T1 in both groups, albeit this was more evident in the EG than in the CG, owing to an interaction between time and group. SRQ score significantly decreased in the EG from T0 to T1, while in the CG it did not, although the interaction between time and group was not significant. Conclusion: The experimental training program was effective in improving QoL and countering school dropout in young citizens with psychopathic traits. Further studies are needed to clarify if such results are due to a relationship between the practical tasks approach including contact sports and an improvement in mentalization processes.

This chapter examines the ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting (ADMM) and its wider regional spinoff, the ADMM-Plus. It makes a case for how cooperative initiatives within the multilateral context of the ADMM and ADMM-Plus embody the R2Provide on instrumental and normative grounds. In contrast to the underwhelming performance of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), the ADMM and ADMM-Plus have hitherto surpassed expectations with their strong military-to-military cooperation primarily in the form of substantive multilateral exercises in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), counterterrorism, maritime security and the like. The relevance and value of the ADMM-Plus is underscored by its upgrading to an annual gathering and overtures from interested parties seeking to join the ADMM-Plus. However, there are legitimate concerns over the future viability of the ADMM and ADMM-Plus: they remain untested in real crisis situations; their ability to address regional flashpoints is still unclear; their members may struggle with participation fatigue given the likely increase in activities and commitments. All these considerations could get in the way of the collective development of a security regionalism that is responsible, meaningful and substantive.

Although empirical links between deviant behavior and school dropout have been extensively demonstrated, the specific influence of drug use and delinquency on school dropout is still not clear and varies across studies. One reason for this lack of consistency may rests upon the way samples of dropouts have been analysed. Recently, Janosz, Le Blanc, Boulerice and Tremblay (1996) constructed and validated a typology of school dropout highlithing the social and psychological diversity of this population. Using a longitudinal sample of adolescents (N=791), we analyzed the predictive relationships of family rebelliousness, drug use and delinquency on school dropout. The results showed an important variability in the predictive relationships according to the type of dropouts. The necessity of considering the psychosocial heterogeneity of dropouts when conducting such studies is discussed.
