Mentoring for Novice Teachers

The purpose of this chapter is to explicate the concept of “mentoring.” First, the confusion on the “mentoring” concept is fixed in this chapter and then the purposes of mentoring practices are examined. The theoretical background of mentoring, roles and responsibilities of mentors, and main mentoring models are reviewed. Then, benefits of mentoring practices are discussed thoroughly. After clearing up the concept of “mentoring,” the qualities that a mentor should have are mentioned in this chapter. Additionally, the selection of mentors, mentor-novice matching, and mentor training issues are highlighted. Finally, the interaction between mentors and novice teachers, the effect of mentors' and novice teachers' workload to mentoring practices, and incentives for mentor teachers are discussed.

Climate change in the Arctic affects both environmental, animal, and human health, as well as human wellbeing and societal development. Women and men, and girls and boys are affected differently. Sex-disaggregated data collection is increasingly carried out as a routine in human health research and in healthcare analysis. This study involved a literature review and used a case study design to analyze gender differences in the roles and responsibilities of men and women residing in the Arctic. The theoretical background for gender-analysis is here described together with examples from the Russian Arctic and a literature search. We conclude that a broader gender-analysis of sex-disaggregated data followed by actions is a question of human rights and also of economic benefits for societies at large and of the quality of services as in the health care.

Traditionally, classroom teachers have been asked to “cooperate” during student teaching, providing advice to imitate and emotional support to meet immediate needs. Based on theories of educative experience, educative mentoring focuses on growth, continuity, and inquiry. The purpose of this study was to understand what educative practices look like through the eyes of 10 mentor teachers who participated in six mentor study groups across a school year. We report on mentor’s talk about and enactment of three practices: coplanning, observing and debriefing, and analyzing student work. Although we introduced and gave name to particular mentoring practices, the mentors’ interpretations of what these look like when done in educative ways helped us craft the definitions we present in our findings. The findings of this study highlight that mentors benefit from professional learning that is focused on concrete practices with opportunities to develop over time in educative ways.

Recollimation shocks (RS) appear associated with relativistic flows propagating through pressure mismatched atmospheres. Astrophysical scenarios invoking the presence of such shocks include jets from AGNs and X-ray binaries and GRBs. We shall start reviewing the theoretical background behind the structure of RS in overpressured jets. Next, basing on numerical simulations, we will focus on the properties of RS in relativistic steady jets threaded by helical magnetic fields depending on the dominant type of energy. Synthetic radio maps from the simulation of the synchrotron emission for a selection of models in the context of parsec-scale extragalactic jets will also be discussed.

This article describes a one-year rural mentor training program designed for novice special education teachers and their teacher mentors. Mentoring efforts to encourage collaboration and collegiality run counter to age-old norms of autonomy and congeniality in the school settings. However, collaborative forums can provide support for both experienced and novice teachers to engage in ‘critical friendships’ through discussions on the dilemmas, ambiguities, and paradoxes identified within the contexts of their rural school settings.

Research has affirmed the importance of principals and mentors in supporting novice teachers; however, little is known about how teacher leaders contribute to this work. We employed a mixed methods design to examine teacher leaders’ contributions to induction by surveying principals, teachers, and other staff ( n = 246) and interviewing teacher leaders ( n = 8). We analyzed data using rank-order and constant comparative analyses. Teacher induction tasks were distributed across teacher leaders, principals, mentor teachers, and other positions. Teacher leaders primarily contributed to professional development and promoting collaboration. They mediated support from colleagues by advancing principal-initiated structures for collaboration, referring novice teachers to experienced teachers, requesting principal support, and recommending induction program improvements. Findings have implications for how leader preparation programs and central office supervisors prepare and support principals and teacher leaders with communicating responsibilities, monitoring workloads, and coordinating distributed leadership for school improvement, particularly in the context of supporting novice teachers.

Groundwater contamination is one of the most concerning issues from uranium mining activities. Radionuclides cannot be destroyed or degraded, unlike some organic contaminants (and similar to metals). Besides, sites, where radionuclides may be found, are mainly radioactive and mixed waste disposal areas, and therefore many other contaminants may also be present in groundwater. The state-of-the-art of environmental technology is continually changing, and thus a review on technologies application is of utmost relevance. This work gives an overview of the available remediation technologies for groundwater contaminated with radionuclides resulting mainly from uranium mining. For each technology, a theoretical background is provided; the state of development, limitations, efficiency, and potential adverse effects are also approached. Examples of application and performance monitoring of remediation progress are described, and criteria for the selection of the appropriate remediation technology are given. The most effective remediation technology will always be site-specific as a result of the multitude of geographic and operational factors that influence the effluent quality and impact the technical feasibility of treatment methods. Ion exchange, chemical precipitation, and membrane filtration have been considered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) as best demonstrated available technologies for radium and uranium removal. Several factors have been demonstrated to influence the selection of a remediation technology (technological aspects and non-technical factors), but even for the technologies demonstrated or industrial proven, two important challenges remain; the (still) mobile radionuclides and the generation of secondary wastes. Besides, remediation technologies are constantly evolving, but future advancement depends on rigorously monitored, documented efficiency, and results achieved. Therefore, the technologies approached in this paper are by no means exhaustive.

Abandoning fiscal decision-making, redistributing and dispersing authorities provided by central government in favor of local and regional-level governance bodies is one of the widely discussed issues across the world based on the theory of “fiscal decentralization”. Incumbent theoretical and empiric researches regarding to achieving economic growth in the light of global economic fragilities indicate that managerial allocation of public funds among central and local authorities casts significant attention in terms of optimizing economic efficiency. In the article, it is tried to introduce brief theoretical background and measurement techniques to depict empiric relationship between fiscal decentralization and economic growth. In addition to investigating empiric facts, an effort to reveal the impact of fiscal decentralization on acquiring economic growth is made. Based on the investigations conducted in the framework of the article, it becomes obvious that empirical approaches toward the issue can be differed in several aspects: the selection of different economies, the time period chosen, the economies’ level of development and the estimation methodology. However, there are few empirical studies that analyze the relationship between fiscal decentralization and economic growth, and unfortunately the evidence on this topic is inconclusive.

Managers at all levels must make various decisions while solving problems of their organizations. It is very important to select an appropriate method to solve a particular managerial problem. The purpose of this paper is to develop a model of method selection of managerial problem solving in an organization. In the beginning the theoretical background regarding managerial problems’ classification and methodological aspects of method selection for their solution are discussed. Further, the paper concentrates on the criteria of method evaluation and building a model helping at selecting the best method to solve the corresponding problem. It also makes an attempt to evaluate the perceived efficiency of the model as well as to provide potential dilemmas to its construction. Finally, some suggestions for future research are provided.
