A Song of Transmedia Storytelling

This chapter describes how being one of the outcomes of new media, convergence culture enables individuals to participate in the production process of media. The active and participatory nature of the members of the modern web society has led media conglomerates to seek new methods. Transmedia storytelling is the concept which emerged as a response to this. It can be seen that this type of storytelling is commonly adopted for tv series which have lately become popular. In this chapter, being delivered with transmedia techniques, Game of Thrones tv series is analysed in terms of transmedia storytelling.

New media or convergence, in a few years we often hear, especially the convergence of media that are often associated with new media that is now developing, particularly media-related technology development. The rapidly of media convergence growthto advances in technology these days, especially when the advent of the Internet and the digitization of information. This media convergence brings together the name "three-C" (computing, communication, and content). Once of product a media convergence is transmediaa, in the paradigm of Transmedia, no longer known specific profession. Eg profession as creators of the film, director, screenwriter, animator, producer of the TV program, game creators, content developers, comic artist, broadcaster, author, novelist even journalists. Everything sublimate into a new capacity, the Story Teller. Selection of the research issue at Volkswagon simulation of interactive digital advertising is a new study in the field of advertising in Indonesia, especially on the concept of transmedia storytelling approach to advertising and media convergence. This study use qualitative research approach. While research method used in this research is the method of observation with descriptive type. Data collection techniques in this study using advertising document observation that in this case the advertisement print of Volkswagen Augmented Reality and literature studies / literature. From the results of research conducted can be obtained conclusion that the power of Transmedia Storytelling on this Volkwagon print reinforces a story. The impact is that consumers will be more emotionally attached to the main products and variants and derivatives. The concept of transmedia storytelling advertising can be effective in the process of imaging and delivery of advertising messages, so that the audience can engage fully in augmented reality.. Because of rapid developments in new media technologies and digital platforms, we live in a media-driven and highly digitalized society. Most of our everyday experiences are either highly mediated or digitalized. Hence, we live in a complex and multidimensional cyberculture. In order to understand and make sense of our experiences and identities within this culture, as scholars, we require fresh, new methods; hence, I propose cyber or digital autoethnography. In this essay, I define cyber or digital autoethnography and making a case for their importance. I will also outline cyber or digital autoethnography’s potentiality.

Abstract Nowadays, at the time of convergence culture, social network, and transmedia storytelling – when social interactions are constantly remediated – e-learning, especially in universities, should be conceived as a sharing educational activity. Different learning experiences should become smoother and able to fade out the closed learning environments (as software platform and classrooms (either virtual or not)). In this paper, we will show some experiences of the Communication Sciences degree program of the University of Cagliari, which is supplied through an e-learning method. In the ten years since its foundation, the approach has evolved from a blended learning with two kinds of traditional activity (online activities and face-to-face lessons) to a much more dynamic learning experience. Many new actors (communication companies, local government, public-service corporations, new media and social media) – indeed – have been involved in educational and teaching process. But also these processes changed: collaborative working, new media comprehension, self-guided problem solving are examples of the new literacies and approaches that can be reached as new learning objectives.

The notion of Education 4.0 has directed to the utilization of various media platforms in teaching, which, in this context, is the adoption of Transmedia storytelling. Transmedia storytelling is the material presented to the students during the teaching and learning session that aims at fostering students transliterate reading. Through transmedia storytelling students are introduced to reading activities that enable them to read through multiple media platforms presented in class. A number of studies have been done in researching transmediality in the area of communication studies, however only little is known in ELT research. Therefore, this paper endeavors to explore the ways in which transmedia storytelling helps foster students’ transliterate reading. Adopting Transmedia Play and Storytelling theories grounded in transmediality, the paper utilizes a case study as the research design. Employing classroom observation and students’ response sheets, the findings reveal that transmedia storytelling promotes students transliterate reading through facilitating them in engaging with multiple types of visual, audio and interactive media activities. It helps them develop awareness in three areas: 1) awareness of the function of pictures for story comprehension and vocabulary acquisition; 2) awareness of the way sound helps for narrative elements interpretation; 3) awareness of the needs of text-reader transaction through new media for comprehension.

This collection considers new phenomena emerging in a convergence environment from the perspective of adaptation studies. The contributions take the most prominent methods within the field to offer reconsiderations of theoretical concepts and practices in participatory culture, transmedia franchises, and new media adaptations. The authors discuss phenomena ranging from mash-ups of novels and YouTube cover songs to negotiations of authorial control and interpretative authority between media producers and fan communities to perspectives on the fictional and legal framework of brands and franchises. In this fashion, the collection expands the horizons of both adaptation and transmedia studies and provides reassessments of frequently discussed (BBC’s Sherlock or the LEGO franchise) and previously largely ignored phenomena (self-censorship in transnational franchises, mash-up novels, or YouTube cover videos).

This article discussed radio broadcasting technology in general and how the industry is relatively resilient amid the development of other media technologies today, such as the Internet. Internet technology is able to present number of social networks through social media that are interactive, direct, and user generated. In addition, the Internet forces conventional broadcasting industries such as radio to penetrate digital mechanisms by practicing radio streaming. Radio broadcasting also add this type of interaction to their listeners, for example through websites, blogs, vlogs (video blogs), Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook accounts. This integrated conventional media technology and new media is often called media convergence. By using qualitative approach and descriptive method, this paper explained a case of media convergence by one of the radio broadcast station in Indonesia that is Delta FM. As a result, Delta FM presents its broadcasts with the help of new media in order to survive in the broadcasting industry amid the current widespread use of new media.
