Ethical Approach to Gathering Survey Data Online

Using the Internet to conduct online surveys is not a new form of data collection. A large proportion of marketing analysis or customer surveys are now done online (Burns & Bush, 2006). However the uptake in tertiary education and research has proven to be slower. This could be attributed to the fact that high-visibility institutions such as universities are subject to stringent codes of ethics (Kizza, 2003). This article discusses techniques university researchers may use when implementing an online survey, premised on McNiff, Lomax, and Whitehead’s (2003) action research checklist of ethical considerations.

The widespread use of personal computers in the work place and at home has created a new opportunity of conducting research. With the increasing accessibility of the Internet and e-mail, using the new medium to distribute surveys is gaining popularity among researchers. The online survey, however, is a “double-edged sword” with the ability to access a large number of respondents at low costs but the risk of increasing difficulties to evaluate the quality of the research (Couper, 2000). Concerns over response rates, sampling, and controlling the data collection environment have posed serious challenges to online survey researchers. The purpose of the present paper is to offer suggestions for addressing these concerns. After a brief discussion on the formats of online surveys, the author will outline the challenges of conducting online surveys and provide some strategies to overcome these challenges.

Online survey is considered as an effective means to collect research data. The use of the internet benefits researchers to get large sample sizes in almost unlimited reach. Unfortunately, the editing and coding of the results of the current survey is often constrained by outcomes that are still in the form of word responses. We introduce Simple Recoder (SRc) to make it easier for researchers to provide codes on response responses, especially on the results of online surveys. This tool will make it easier for researchers and students to organize data from online survey results.

The article is dedicated to finding reasons for the reliability of such a data collection tool as Internet surveys. The article consistently presents the arguments “pro” and “contra” using online surveys. In the scientific community, “contra” arguments are often put forward considering ideal research standards, which are often not feasible even in proven methods of data collection, such as censuses, phone surveys, etc. Based on this, in the article each argument “contra” is placed into the comparative plane — by examining the Internet surveys’ accusations of insufficient representativeness, sampling bias, and other disadvantages along with similar arguments against accepted methods of data collection, the lack of theoretical and methodological foundation of these charges is revealed. The irrelevance of “contra” arguments is also shown by analyzing global and Russian trends in the spread of the Internet and computer literacy. The “pro” arguments presented in the article are intended to demonstrate the features of generalization of findings obtained using online surveys, considering the specifics of this type of data collection. The evidence presented in the article for the validity of data obtained in online surveys confirms the possibility of using them in particular for making legal and public management decisions, provided that the specifics of the obtained data are taken into account.

Firms have only just begun to fully use the Internet to obtain customer information in their database marketing processes to enhance customer relationship management (CRM). This chapter introduces a framework about how they can do this. Essentially, it argues that the advent of Internet/database marketing brings solutions to some of the difficulties in customer relationship management by providing one-to-one interactivity and customization. For example, the Internet offers benefits, such as increased consumer data collection accuracy and speed, cost savings in collecting data, greater interaction, and better relationships with customers. This chapter develops a framework for integrating the Internet and database marketing to help marketers improve customer relationship management through rigorous action research.


Essentially, the “branching logic” feature enables survey developers to create one survey and deploy it in different ways to different respondents; this enables survey developers to create one survey with variant question elicitations among different respondents, based on a wide variety of variables. This chapter provides a basic overview of some common types of branching logic in self-administered online survey design, development, and deployment, and highlights some considerations in effective branching logic and some precautions related to survey taker trajectories and experiences, proper survey setups for desired data collection and data analysis, survey pilot testing, and other aspects.

I chose this topic for inquiry because I have personal experience with bullying, and I wanted to know what I can do to combat bullying when I am an elementary teacher. Through an online survey and personal interviews, research has been conducted to answer the question whether or not the increased availability of technology to students in, and out, of the classroom has an impact on bullying. My data collection, through the use of an online survey and personal interviews, has led me to believe that the increased availability of technology does have an impact on the number of cases and severity of bullying. The second question that I set out to answer is what can teachers do to recognize and prevent bullying in their classroom. In a twenty-first century classroom, students need to be educated on how to safely use the Internet. This could include administering a digital citizenship course to students. Teachers must also be aware of the warning signs of bullying in order to recognize when it is happening and stop it in its tracks. The best way that teachers can combat bullying is to educate themselves, and their students about the dangers of bullying. As a future teacher, this information is important for me because it will allow me to do more to combat bullying in my classroom.

This research is motivated by the lack of ability to write simple words first grade students of SD Negeri 014 Pagaran Tapah Darussalam Rokan Hulu. This study aims to improve the ability to write simple words first grade students of SD Negeri 014 Pagaran Tapah Darussalam, held for 1 month. The subjects were students of class I SD Negeri 014 Pagaran Tapah Darussalam academic year 2015/2016 the number of students as many as 7 people, consisting of 5 boys and 2 girls. Form of research is classroom action research. The research instrument consists of instruments and instrument performance data collection activity observation sheet form teacher and student activity. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that the ability to write simple words can be enhanced through training methods first grade students of SD Negeri 014 Pagaran Tapah Darussalam. This statement can be accepted, because the students' ability to write simple words increased. Where known from preliminary data the average value of 59.3 or in the medium category. When viewed from the classical completeness, there is 28.6% or 2 students who completed gain value according to standards KKM, which is a minimum of 65. However, after the implementation of training methods, obtained an average value of 67.1 or higher in a category. When viewed from the classical completeness has reached 57.1%, or 4 students, but research has not been successful. Because this study was successful when 85% of students obtaining a minimum value of 65. While on the second cycle, to reach an average value of 80.7 or higher in a category. When viewed from the classical completeness, has acquired all of the students (100%). Thus, the researchers limited the study to the second cycle. Because of the results obtained was clear, that improve the students' first-class students of SD Negeri 014 Pagaran Tapah Darussalam in writing simple words.

The learning of listening to the story of the child has been given to the students of grade VI of SD Negeri 020Tembilahan Hilir. However, the existing picture shows that classically, the result only reaches an average of20% or is not satisfactory based on preliminary tests. This research is a classroom action research conducted byclass VI SD Negeri 020 Tembilahan Hilir with subject 20 people. Data collection techniques through tests andobservations. Then the analysis technique is done descriptively. The result of the research concludes that thestudents' learning achievement has increased. This is seen in the preliminary study of 20%, or only 4 studentsout of 20 students completed, in the first cycle increased to 50% because of 20 students 10 students, and in thesecond cycle increased by 85% of 20 students 17 students.

This research is motivated by the low ability of basic technique of playing the students' grate V.A SDN 002Pantai Cermin Kabupaten Kampar. This study aims to improve the basic techniques of playing kasti throughcooperative learning methods paired type students class V.A SDN 002 Pantai Cermin Kampar District. Thesubjects of this study are students of class V.A SDN 002 Pantai Cermin Kabupaten Kampar with the number ofstudents as many as 28 people. The form of research is classroom action research. The instrument of thisresearch consisted of performance instrument and data collection instrument in the form of observation sheet ofteacher activity and student activity. The basic technique ability to play with cooperative method of paired typelearning in VA VAN 002 Pantai Cermin Kabupaten Kabupaten Kampar average of basic technique ability toplay the students' census on the initial test is categorized less with percentage 48,9%, in cycle I increase to68,4% with sufficient category whereas in cycle II the average ability of students is categorized very high with90.8% percentage. The cassical completeness specified in this study that 80% of students have been declaredthoroughly achieved. The conclusion of this research is the application of cooperative learning method pair typecan improve basic technique of playing kasti.

As participant recruitment and data collection over the Internet have become more common, numerous observers have expressed concern regarding the validity of research conducted in this fashion. One growing method of conducting research over the Internet involves recruiting participants and administering questionnaires over Facebook, the world’s largest social networking service. If Facebook is to be considered a viable platform for social research, it is necessary to demonstrate that Facebook users are sufficiently heterogeneous and that research conducted through Facebook is likely to produce results that can be generalized to a larger population. The present study examines these questions by comparing demographic and personality data collected over Facebook with data collected through a standalone website, and data collected from college undergraduates at two universities. Results indicate that statistically significant differences exist between Facebook data and the comparison data-sets, but since 80% of analyses exhibited partial η2 < .05, such differences are small or practically nonsignificant in magnitude. We conclude that Facebook is a viable research platform, and that recruiting Facebook users for research purposes is a promising avenue that offers numerous advantages over traditional samples.
