A vendor is any person or company that sells goods or services to someone else in the economic production chain. Parts manufacturers are vendors of parts to other manufacturers that assemble the parts into something sold to wholesalers or retailers. Retailers are vendors of products to consumers. In information technology, the term is applied to suppliers of goods and services to other companies. This chapter reviews attributes of IT vendors in healthcare. IT consultants who provide services to the healthcare industry are described and then the vendors of software and services.

Different production arrangements have been experienced in several economic fields. It is possible to observe integration cycles, when a company becomes responsible for consecutive stages in the production chain of goods and services. This process, known as vertical integration, generates many implications that have been analyzed by studies about operational management, transaction costs economics, competition and anti-trust regulation. Focused on the healthcare industry, this research aims to analyze the managerial perception about vertical integration in this field, aiming to gain insights about the motivations and implications of this process, not sufficiently exploited by the specialized literature. Using a qualitative approach, interviewees were asked to rank possible vertical integration benefits. It was noticed that the control of production costs and the optimization of services' quality were the main benefits of this process. Obtained results reinforce some perceptions gained at studies conducted among north american companies; however, some differences were observed, which are characteristic of the analyzed context.

The emergence of ecommerce almost three decades ago has completely transformed the approach to purchasing goods and services across various countries in the world. Almost every country in the globe, now have some form of ecommerce operations, this has further been enhanced by the stay at home COVID-19 induced lockdowns. The value and volume of transactions has also increased in transactions. However, there has been security concerns impacting ecommerce operations, which has in part, led to increasing adoption of hosting ecommerce systems in the public cloud. Threat modelling offer mechanisms to enhance the security of information technology (IT) systems. In this paper, we apply different threat modelling techniques to decompose the migration of an on-premise hosted ecommerce system to the public cloud and also evaluate these threat modelling techniques.

Healthcare is on of the industries that is currently fast adopting information technology (IT) into use. Electronic patient records (EPRs) are at the hearth of healthcare information technology applications. However, patient data is seldom efficiently organized even within one organization, and when patient data is needed in applications covering several organizations, the situation becomes even more complicated. We draw some lessons on how EPR systems should look like from the customer relationship management literature point of view: After all, patients are the customers of healthcare institutions. As a guiding framework for this analysis we use the concepts developed by (Winter, Ammenwerth, et al,. 2001). Then we proceed to discuss how EPR systems diffuse in the healthcare industry and use the Internet standards adoption (ISA) model presented by (Hovav, Patnayakuni, et al., 2004) as a starting point. We apply this model to the diffusion of EPR systems in the healthcare industry. We found big differences between customer relationship management and EPRs management. Customer relationship management aims at long-term relationships and customer profitability, which are not strong goals for EPR systems. Our analysis too resulted to the conclusion that the practical innovation adoption bath for EPRs over paper-based patient records is that of adoption through coexistence.

The healthcare industry is being impacted by advances in information technology in four major ways: first, a broad spectrum of tasks that were previously done manually can now be performed by computers; second, some tasks can be outsourced to other countries using inexpensive communications technology; third, longitudinal and societal healthcare data can now be analyzed in acceptable periods of time; and fourth, the best medical expertise can sometimes be made available without the need to transport the patient to the doctor or vice versa. The healthcare industry will increasingly use a portfolio approach comprised of three closely-coordinated components seamlessly interwoven together: healthcare tasks performed by humans on-site; healthcare tasks performed by humans off-site, including tasks performed in other countries; and healthcare tasks performed by computers without direct human involvement. Finally, this chapter deals with intellectual property and legal aspects related to the three-pronged healthcare services paradigm.

The past few years have seen Web-based technology diffusing into a wide cross-section of industries, cutting across various barriers, and changing the way many companies do business. The healthcare industry, though relatively slow to adopt information technology (Eder and Darter, 1998), is no exception. Information technology is transforming the healthcare environment in ways that go beyond simple consumer health information Web sites (Hagland, 1997). Increasingly, the industry is leveraging information technology effectively to manage its business and address issues affecting patient care (Lankford, 1999). At the heart of the healthcare industry lies the patient-physician relationship. The interaction between these two players usually occurs in a clinic/hospital setting. It is generally believed that the relationship between the patient and the physician is influenced not only by this interaction, but also by other interactions that a patient may have inside a clinic/hospital setting, such as interactions with nurses, staff, the registration desk, etc. However, changes brought about by information technology (a) allow players outside the clinic/hospital setting to influence the patient-physician relationship and (b) affect the way in which players and processes inside a clinic/hospital setting influence the patient-physician relationship. This chapter examines how Web technology affects the patient-physician relationship through its impact on players and processes both outside and inside a clinic/hospital setting.

The world of commerce has undergone a transformation since the early 1990s, which has increasingly included the utilization of information technologies by firms across industry sectors in order to achieve greater productivity and profitability. In other words, through use of such technologies as mainframes, PCs, telecommunications, state-of-the-art software applications and the Internet, corporations seek to utilize productive resources in a way that augment the efficiency with which they provide the most appropriate mix of goods and services to their ultimate consumer. This process has provided the backbone to the evolution of the information economy which has included increased investment in information technology (IT), the demand for IT labor and the initiation of such new paradigms as e-commerce.

Objective: Quality improvement in the healthcare industry has evolved over the past few decades. In recent years, an increased focus on coordination of care efforts and the introduction of health information technology has been of high importance in improving the quality of patient care.Methods: In this review, we present a history of quality improvement efforts, discuss quality improvement in the healthcare industry, and examine quality improvement strategies with a focus on patient-centered care and information technology applications via patient registries.Results: Evidence shows that the key to quality improvement efforts in the healthcare industry is the coordination of patient care efforts through better data evaluation processes. By utilizing patient registries that can be linked to electronic health records (EHRs) and the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) framework, the quality of care provided to patients can be improved.Conclusions: While many healthcare organizations have quality improvement departments or teams in place that may be able to handle these types of efforts, it is important for organizations to be familiar with processes and frameworks that employees at different levels of the organization can be involved in. In order to ensure successful outcomes from quality improvement initiatives, managers and clinicians should work together in identifying problems and developing solutions.
