The evolution of the human society over the last 50,000 years has been greatly influenced by technology. The last 200 years have brought about technological achievements at a breathtaking speed. For about six decades, we have been the beneficiaries of the information technologies, which have acquired, over the last 20-25 years, due to the communication technology, an exponential proliferation. In an ideal world, computers will blend into the landscape, will inform but not overburden you with information, and make you aware of them only when you need them. Therefore, the human being is a mere subject of technology, and his everyday life has become increasingly stressing. In order to diminish this stress, solutions have been considered, designed to “tame” the technologies that the human being uses, so as to become calm technologies, that is, technologies that affect neither the human life nor the environment. We can say that everything that surrounds us is technology! Be it or not natural, It influences the environment we live in. Here is a serious reason for every technology to be calm! This article basically deals with the concept of calm technologies and with the characteristics that should be emphasized in the field of the information and communication technologies aimed at turning them into calm technologies.

This chapter introduces a qualitative study of the use of mobile text messaging (SMS) and re?ects on how SMS in?uences social interaction. It describes how this new communication technology is used to maintain social relations and how it generally assists users in their everyday activities. Three issues are highlighted: how users use SMS to overcome shyness, how they use it for micro-grooming, and how they are able to control messages to their advantage. It is argued that SMS facilitates users in their everyday life through the ways it supports awareness and accountability. These characteristics make the communication channel a “social translucent” technology, contributing to its popularity. It is suggested that simple information and communication technologies such as SMS can provide powerful tools in new designs of information and communication technologies.

ABSTRACTNew paradigms and new realities emerge in the human society in current days, characterizing a society that questions its segregation culture, glimpsing new paths towards social inclusion of people with cerebral palsy. This scenario encourages scientific research, contributing to the evolution of available technological resources for accessibility. The significance of Communication and Information Technologies can be observed in a context in which, not just information shows a prominent role, but the ways to access it. The main goal of this article is to discuss, in the light of Technological and Complexity Paradigms, about the access to information by people with cerebral palsy, through Information and Communication Technologies. These technological resources are considered as Assistive Technology, once they promote accessibility for people with cerebral palsy by using user interfaces, which are especially relevant for the proposal reflection in this document.RESUMONovos paradigmas e novas realidades insurgem na sociedade humana nos dias atuais, caracterizando uma sociedade que questiona sua cultura de segregação, vislumbrando novos caminhos na inclusão social de pessoas com paralisia cerebral.
