Towards A Combined Model for On-Line and Real Conferences

This chapter presents a combined model for on-line and real conferences. The chapter introduces Web 2.0 and its importance. Then, using Web 2.0 in real and virtual conferences is discussed since Web 2.0 can make a difference is supporting such a conference model. A past on-line event is analysed and evaluated in order to have lessons learned and make recommendations towards this proposal. The combined model approach is presented and detailed in its components and the importance of Web 2.0 elements is discussed.

Este artículo describe el desarrollo de una arquitectura funcional orientada a la Gestión de Conocimiento Personal (GCP), definido desde el concepto de las lecciones aprendidas que se registran en una red social de uso masivo. Esta arquitectura funcional aplica de forma práctica la implementación de un sistema de registro de las lecciones aprendidas personales, en la nube a través de una red social Facebook. El proceso inicia con la adquisición de datos a partir de la conexión a una base de datos no relacional (NoSql) en SimpleDB de Amazon Web Services y a la cual se le ha configurado un algoritmo de análisis complementario para realizar el análisis semántico de la información registrada de las lecciones aprendidas y de esta forma estudiar la generación de Gestión de Conocimiento Organizacional (GCO) desde GCP. El resultado final es el diseño de una arquitectura funcional que permite integrar la aplicación web 2.0 y un algoritmo de análisis semántico a partir de información no estructurada aplicando técnicas de aprendizaje de máquina.Palabras Claves: Gestión de conocimiento, gestión de conocimiento personal, lecciones aprendidas, análisis semántico, computación en la nube, redes sociales, aprendizaje de máquina.This paper shows the development of a functional architecture oriented Personal Knowledge Management (PKM), defined from the concept of lessons learned that are registered in a social network for mass use. This functional architecture applied in a practical implementation of a registration system for personal lessons learned in the cloud through a social network Facebook. The process begins with the acquisition of data from the connection to a non-relational database (NoSQL) in SimpleDB of Amazon Web Services and which you have set up a complementary analysis algorithm for semantic analysis of information recorded lessons learned and thus study the generation of Organizational Knowledge Management (OKM) from PKM. ABSTRACTThis paper presents the main results of an investigation whose purpose is to investigate the adoption of on-line social networks in SMEs run by women. The base assumption is that the use of networks as a strategic communication element is still at an early stage of development, far from being an established practice. Our interest in this study is to determine the willingness and motivations of entrepreneurs in using these networks, as well as utilities and difficulties they have faced. Our goal is to visualize the change of attitude and competences that entrepreneurs are imprinting on their businesses within the competitive environment they operate in. Ultimately, we are interested in studying the perception of women-entrepreneurs regarding the adoption of online social networks to the extent where they are, as an additional management tool. We find ourselves facing a new field of knowledge on which there are very few references and very little research has been carried. Hence, this study has a primarily qualitative and exploratory purpose. To obtain the needed information we held semi-structured interviews to fourteen Andalusian entrepreneurs, coming from different business fields. The main findings were that just less than a half of them used them, or implemented them in their companies, as communication tools. The others, depending on to the size of their business, adopted them as an extension of the personal use in which they had been started.RESUMENEste trabajo presenta los principales resultados de una investigación cuya finalidad es conocer la adopción de las redes sociales on-line en las pymes dirigidas por mujeres. Se parte de la base de que el uso de redes, como elemento estratégico de comunicación, se encuentra todavía en una fase incipiente de desarrollo, lejos aún de ser una práctica consolidada. Nuestro interés en este trabajo es conocer la predisposición y motivaciones de las empresarias hacia el uso estas redes, así como las utilidades y dificultades a las que han de enfrentarse. Nos interesa visibilizar el cambio actitudinal y competencial que las empresarias están imprimiendo en sus empresas dentro del marco competitivo en el que se encuentran. En definitiva, nos interesa estudiar la percepción que tienen las empresarias sobre el uso de las redes sociales online en la medida en que están insertas, como una herramienta más de gestión empresarial. Nos situamos ante un nuevo ámbito de conocimiento sobre el que apenas existen referencias bibliográficas ni se ha realizado apenas investigación; de ahí que la investigación tenga una finalidad fundamentalmente exploratoria y de carácter cualitativo. Para la obtención de la información se realizaron catorce entrevistas semi-estructuradas entre empresarias andaluzas de distintos sectores de actividad. Entre los principales resultados encontramos que algo menos de la mitad de ellas las utilizan, o están implantadas en sus empresas, como herramientas de comunicación. El resto, y relacionado con el tamaño de sus negocios, las utilizan como una prolongación del uso personal en el que se iniciaron.

MIE 515, Alternative Energy Systems, an engineering technical elective course open to senior undergraduates and graduate students, was delivered as an on line course for Fall 2011. This is the first time an undergraduate engineering course at the University of Toronto has been offered online. The course is also one of five pilot online courses across the University. The move online is being accomplished in two steps. For Fall 2011, a small lecture section of 25 students was used as a setting for video capture and the remaining 110 students accessed the course lectures online asynchronously. A live tutorial was offered once a week. All students were physically present for the midterm examination and the final examination. For Fall 2012, the course will be delivered entirely online, with the exception of student physical presence for the two examinations. Pedagogical and technical lessons learned during this transition year will be presented. The benefits and drawbacks of online delivery will be discussed from the perspective gained this year and compared with our expectations. Student feedback will also be presented and discussed.

Improved 4G communication technologies in conjunction to Web 2.0 technologies are contributing to design and implement new and exciting healthcare services for citizens that can be accessed any time and any place. Tobacco is a risk factor causing increased morbidity and mortality in developed countries. Smoking cessation is a hard challenge for several people that can be achieve with the help of Web 2.0 and wireless access technologies to multimedia information. There are a lot of basic Web 1.0 portals for smoking cessation. The authors present an overview of serious damages or even death provoked by nicotine poisoning, an overview of on-line group therapies, and their user-centric Web 2.0 Portal intended for smoking cessation. They demonstrate innovative and effective facts of their Web 2.0 portal: Wireless access, scheduled agendas, and video on-demand services.

Abstract The current best-estimate model describing the fracture toughness of ferritic steels is the Master Curve methodology standardized in ASTM E1921. Shortly following standardization by ASTM, efforts were undertaken to incorporate this best-estimate model into the framework of the ASME Code to reduce the conservatisms resulting from use of a reference temperature based on the nil-ductility temperature (RTNDT) to index the plane strain fracture initiation toughness (KIc). The reference temperature RTT0, which is based on the ASTM E1921-defined T0 value, was introduced in ASME Code Cases N-629 (replaced by Code Case N-851) and N-631 to replace RTNDT for indexing the ASME KIc curve. Efforts are continuing within the ASME Code to implement direct use of the Master Curve model; using the T0 reference temperature to index an elastic-plastic, KJc fracture toughness curve. Transitioning to a direct T0-based fracture toughness assessment methodology requires the availability of T0 estimates for all materials to be assessed. The historical Charpy and NDT-based regulatory approach to characterizing toughness for reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels results in a lack of T0 values for a large population of the US nuclear fleet. The expense of the fracture toughness testing required to estimate a valid T0 value makes it unlikely that T0 will ever be widely available. Since direct implementation of best-estimate, fracture toughness models in codes and regulatory actions requires an estimate of T0 for all materials of interest it is necessary to develop an alternative means of estimating T0. A project has been undertaken to develop a combined model approach to estimating T0 from data that may include limited elastic-plastic fracture toughness KJc, Charpy, tensile, ductile initiation toughness, arrest toughness, and/or nil-ductility temperature data. Using correlations between these properties and T0 a methodology for combining estimates of T0 from several sources of data was developed. T0 estimates obtained independently from the Master Curve model, the Simple T28J correlation model, and a more complex Charpy correlation model were combined using the Mixture Probability Density Function (PDF) method to provide a single estimate for T0. Using this method, the individual T0 estimates were combined using weighting factors that accounted for sample size and individual model accuracy to optimize the accuracy and precision of the combined T0 estimate. Combining weighted estimates of T0 from several sources of data was found to provide a more refined estimate of T0 than could be obtained from any of the models alone.

The sheer volume of information, 15 books and over 1,500 graphics, contained in CSC's corporate system development methodology, Catalyst,sm has created a need to have this information on-line. On-line access, it was felt, would dramatically impact productivity. To help support users and facilitate the use of Catalyst, the Microsoft (MS) help system, in conjunction with RoboHELPTM, was used to put Catalyst online in a hypertext format. Incorporating feedback and usability concerns was key in determining how its more than 20,000 users could best utilize this product. The design evolved over several months and in its final form also extended the limited functionality of the MS help system, providing a more robust product. This paper discusses the challenges surrounding the design of a large windows help system, approximately 53 MB in size (33 MB when fully compressed). The lessons learned can form the basis for creating an effective help system development process for meeting users' needs.

Estudos científicos consolidados na área de educação a distância mostram a relevância do design instrucional na elaboração de material didático. Isto se deve, principalmente, à motivação e ao incentivo à autoaprendizagem que o material pode exercer no estimulo da autonomia dos estudantes na modalidade em que devem ser capazes de “construir” sua rede de conhecimento. Este fato foi levado em consideração na elaboração e implementação dos cursos on-line que compõem a área “Formação via Web” da Diretoria de Extensão da Fundação Centro de Ciências e Educação Superior a Distância do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (CECIERJ). Desde o segundo semestre de 2009, os cursos, que são gratuitos e oferecidos totalmente a distância, são direcionados a professores, em atividade, de escolas públicas e privadas. Neste artigo, é apresentado um estudo de caso por meio de uma pesquisa qualitativa realizada no período setembro/2009 a julho/2012 com os participantes de um destes cursos, intitulado Formação Continuada em Tecnologias Educacionais na Web (FCTEWeb) – Módulos 1 e 2. Dos 1.364 professores cursistas atendidos no período citado, de acordo com os resultados obtidos nesta pesquisa, com os 682 cursistas aprovados, ficaram evidenciadas a satisfação e a aprovação dos cursistas em relação ao modelo de design instrucional utilizado. Segundo eles, este modelo não só facilitou o processo de aprendizagem no que diz respeito à utilização de algumas ferramentas Web 2.0, bem como a posterior aplicação em sua prática docente, proposta principal do curso FCTEWeb.
