Smart Parking

With the increase of urban population and traffic congestion, smart parking is a strategic, economic, environmentally friendly solution for cities looking to remain connected. A sustainable parking system parking is connected in some way to every facet of the city that is water, waste, energy, and transportation. With the information and communication technology evolution and the development of the internet of things, drivers can more efficiently find satisfying parking spaces with smart parking services. This research adopts a survey approach by employing the use of questionnaires. From the questionnaire, descriptive data analysis is used to synthesize, analyze, and interpret the data. The result elicits user requirements and constraints for the development of a mobile app solution that will eliminate unnecessary traffic and ensure the maximum utilization of municipal parking facilities. These user requirements will determine the design and development of a mobile application that saves time, reduce the environmental impact, and improve the quality of life.

In recent years, enormous amounts of digital data have been generated. In parallel, data collection, storage, and analysis technologies have developed. Recently, there has been an increasing trend of people moving towards urban areas. By 2030 more than 60% of the world's population will live in an urban environment. Urban areas are big data resource because they include millions of citizens, technological devices, and vehicles which generate data continuously. Besides, rapid urbanization brings many challenges, such as environmental pollution, traffic congestion, health problems, energy management, etc. Some policies for countries are required to cope with urbanization problems. One of these policies is to build smart cities. Smart cities integrate information and communication technology and various physical devices connected to the network (the internet of things or IoT) to both improve the quality of government services and citizen welfare. This chapter presents a literature review of big data, smart cities, IoT, green-IoT concepts, using technology and methods, and applications worldwide.

The city of Kerbela is from the famous holy cities in Iraq and in the world where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein there. This city suffers from lack of suitable parking area for the vehicles coming to this city. This study selects a surrounding section which is approximately the same as other sections surrounding the city center. Knowing the problems in this section give a comprehensive picture for parking problems in the whole city. The study area has serious parking problems; therefore five off-street parks have been surveyed for two days during ordinary day and the other one in religious day (Thursday at day and night). Other types of data have been collected such as vehicular flow and pedestrian flow in order to select the best management for this area. The location of these five parks is on the north side of the city facing the main arterial street surrounding the holy city and in the opposing direction to the main garage called Al-Garage Al-Muhad from which different trips end and start. The analysis results of field data show that parking behavior differs in the ordinary day from the day of religious issues. It is a specific location has been assigned for one park with multi-stories in the same area as alternative of these separated parks. In addition, it was found that there is a need for managing pedestrian movement related to the parking vehicles in this area. This study also suggests using smart parking system as first step towards building intelligent transportation system to manage the parking facilities.

The data-driven approach to sustainable urban development is becoming increasingly popular among the cities across the world. This is due to cities’ attention in supporting smart and sustainable urbanism practices. In an era of digitalization of urban services and processes, which is upon us, platform urbanism is becoming a fundamental tool to support smart urban governance, and helping in the formation of a new version of cities—i.e., City 4.0. This new version utilizes urban dashboards and platforms in its operations and management tasks of its complex urban metabolism. These intelligent systems help in maintaining the robustness of our cities, integrating various sensors (e.g., internet-of-things) and big data analysis technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence) with the aim of optimizing urban infrastructures and services (e.g., water, waste, energy), and turning the urban system into a smart one. The study generates insights from the sensor city best practices by placing some of renowned projects, implemented by Huawei, Cisco, Google, Ericsson, Microsoft, and Alibaba, under the microscope. The investigation findings reveal that the sensor city approach: (a) Has the potential to increase the smartness and sustainability level of cities; (b) Manages to engage citizens and companies in the process of planning, monitoring and analyzing urban processes; (c) Raises awareness on the local environmental, social and economic issues, and; (d) Provides a novel city blueprint for urban administrators, managers and planners. Nonetheless, the use of advanced technologies—e.g., real-time monitoring stations, cloud computing, surveillance cameras—poses a multitude of challenges related to: (a) Quality of the data used; (b) Level of protection of traditional and cybernetic urban security; (c) Necessary integration between the various urban infrastructure, and; (d) Ability to transform feedback from stakeholders into innovative urban policies.

The city is transforming into the smart city using information and communication technology (ICT), and the major role in economic development is building an infrastructure to enable greater connectivity between citizen service, energy, economics, and government. A smart city can monitor the real-world scenario in real time and support the intelligent services to both locals and travelers. Due to urbanization, people move from village to city. Increase the population in city also causes an increase in vehicles. Here, parking the vehicle securely is a challenging problem. In a smart parking system, all the devices are connected to the internet. Hackers and third parties easily access the user data or sensitive data. Smart parking system application controls the traffic, air pollution, and city functions making it easy to park the vehicle and reduce accidents. Many of the problems arise in the security and privacy of the sensitive data. In this chapter, the authors discuss security and privacy issues in smart parking systems using IoT.

AbstractSmart cities use Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to enrich existing public services and to improve citizens’ quality of life. In this scenario, Mobile CrowdSensing (MCS) has become, in the last few years, one of the most prominent paradigms for urban sensing. MCS allow people roaming around with their smart devices to collectively sense, gather, and share data, thus leveraging the possibility to capture the pulse of the city. That can be very helpful in emergency scenarios, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, that require to track the movement of a high number of people to avoid risky situations, such as the formation of crowds. In fact, using mobility traces gathered via MCS, it is possible to detect crowded places and suggest people safer routes/places. In this work, we propose an edge-anabled mobile crowdsensing platform, called ParticipAct, that exploits edge nodes to compute possible dangerous crowd situations and a federated blockchain network to store reward states. Edge nodes are aware of all critical situation in their range and can warn the smartphone client with a smart push notification service that avoids firing too many messages by adapting the warning frequency according to the transport and the specific subarea in which clients are located.

The article analyzes the impact of digitalization on the life population quality, identifies areas, identifies the positive and negative impact of digitalization on the qualitative characteristics of the population’s life. The life quality is one of the important indicators of the level of development of society; it is a complex systemic integral characteristic of satisfaction with material and non-material factors of life of the population living in a certain territory. Since the environment and environmental conditions are constantly changing, various trends and patterns occur, the trends and requirements of our time, inevitably affect the life quality. One of such conditions, gaining momentum at the present time, is digitalization. Digitalization is the introduction of modern digital technologies in various spheres of life and production. Currently, in all types and levels of economic processes in the world and in individual countries, the so-called “digitalization” is gaining momentum - the active use of information and communication technologies. There is a need to accept digitalization as a universal process, adapt to it and use its levers for the best possible result for society. In nine areas, digitalization directly affects the life quality - the city, education, healthcare, economy, finance, information systems, infrastructure, business, and agriculture.

The concept of Smart City (SC) has been popular recently, and has been adopted by many cities in the world with various implementation and development. As the world most population now concentrates on urban area, a sustainable city planning and management become important. As the population keeps growing,pressure and tension on a city arise: space for living, waste management, traffic congestion, sufficient clean water resources, and other issues. Beginning in around 2009, the concept of SC was designed to solve problems related to city growth in a sustainable manner. By using technology, Internet of Things (IoT), and community participation, SC aims to make the city a livable place for its inhabitants, putting people as the center of interest and in quality of life in sustainable manners as ultimate goal. This paper aimed to deliver a study on the trend of SC adopted by two cities: Amsterdam and Jakarta. The study was conducted through literature review. The data were analyzed to compare the concept of SC in each city from different parameters, focusing on the developmentprocess, technological adoption, political and institutional arrangement and implementation. The results show that each city has specif ic strategy to implement SC, based on their economic, social, environment and demographic characteristics. It is also important to underline that the main concept of SC is to attract related stakeholders in taking charge of their roles for the success of SC. Furthermore, both cities has a sharing vision in putting environment as the main framework of the development of SC.

   With the development of road infrastructure, there is a significant increase in number of private vehicles which results in traffic congestion, directly effecting the flow of traffic, and life of citizens. Parking becomes a significant problem in the urban areas (Cao & Menendez, 2015). The research paper proposes a smart parking system to solve the current parking problem at affordable cost. Previously automatic car parking system were proposed to reduce the space or size required for parking especially in crowded places with few spaces, such as a multi-story car park providing cars with parking on multiple levels stacked vertically to increase the number of parking spaces (Ibrahim, 2017). The proposed system utilizes the latest advancement in the Information and Communication Technologies and consists of  four layers: Application, Middleware, Networking, and sensor layer. It offers environmental friendly, reduces harmful emissions during parking, and is a computerized system pre-programmed without human intervention. The research paper highlights the comparison of traditional parking system with smart parking system using IoT. The paper also proposes a framework for smart parking system.

Parking in Sumbawa District, West Nusa Tenggara nowdays has not provided significant problems yet to traffic congestion in some roads in Sumbawa District, but in some places with activities of trading, shopping and service centers will provide potential congestion in the next few years if there is no professionally improvement in parking management. This is due to inadequate parking facilities, manually parking systems, limited quality of the parking attendants and supervision that is less than optimal. The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of on-street parking and the potential income of parking charge in Sumbawa District. The analysis method used is descriptive qualitative and quantitative. The expected result of this study is the identification of on-street parking characteristics and the potential income of parking charge to support the performance of parking and smoothness of urban traffic in Sumbawa District.

The Implementation of e-government has been established with the Instruction of President. Application of e-government is a research topic that has received a lot attention because of its improve the function and management of the city by utilizing Information and Communication Technology to improve the quality of public services. In this research focused on one application of e-government that called Mobile City. This study observe 22 application that has been implemented in 22 regencies/cities. This study have goals to identify and compare all 22 Mobile City Applocation to get the rank of the regency/city based on the quality of its application and research city with the best application . The results of the study to show the Mobile City application applies a Location Based Services (LBS) system so the main features of this application showed tourism locations or public facilities. The difference of application features between regencies/cities is depends on how the regency/city developed their application. The city that has the most complete features on its mobile city is Surakarta that called Solo Destination. This application is managed by the Office of Infromation Communication Statistics and Coding of Surakarta City with the most frequently used feature is community complaints.
