A Revisit of the Concept of Interactivity and its Dimensions

With the development of Information and Communication Technologies, social networking platforms have permeated into every aspect of industries and our lives. This new digital phenomenon brings opportunities for companies to reach and communicate with their audiences in different ways. In the same vein, this revolutionary phenomenon has largely accelerated the rate at which relationships develop and information is shared. It is worth noting that during the communication process there has been a growth in the potency of interactivity, which lays emphasis on conversing with audiences rather than merely communicating to them. This paper draws on the literature developed in various disciplines with the help of tri-dimensional features of interactivity identified as active control, two-way communications, and real-time communications. These three principal dimensions are explored within a Weblog context to provide a comprehensive understanding of the concept of interactivity and its dynamics.

Due to advancing information and communication technologies webinars have become a means of continuing education which demands methodological support and standardization. The authors analyze the methods of labor rating, in particular, timing of technological and organizational processes. The factors of time input for webinar organization are defined: i. e. number of lecturers, including those remote ones, various formats and number of demonstrated materials (presentations, video, audio, texts, links), scenario multitasking (for example, polling, displaying related materials, linking, etc.), simultaneous broadcasting to another videohosting  (i.e YouTube). The list of technological processes for webinar organization is presented along with the findings of labor rating as exemplified by the NPLS&T’s experience. The calculations of real time consumed are obtained through the judgment-based method as well as through the continuous timing method. The authors conclude on the rate between real-life and typical timing of webinar organization and the proportion of this time within working hours in NPLS&T.

In particular, eParticipation opens up greater opportunities for consultation and dialogue between government and citizens. Many governments have embraced eParticipation by setting up websites that allow citizens to contribute and have their say on particular issues. Although these sites make use of some of the latest ICT and Web 2.0 technologies, the uptake and sustained usage by citizens is still relatively low. Additionally, when users do participate, there is the issue of how the numerous contributions can be effectively processed and analysed, to avoid the inevitable information overload created by thousands of unstructured comments. The WAVE platform addresses what the authors see as the main barriers to the uptake of eParticipation websites by adopting a holistic and sustained approach of engaging users to participate in public debates. The WAVE platform incorporates argument visualisation, social networking, and Web 2.0 techniques to facilitate users participating in structured visual debates in a community environment.

On-line journalism completes 15 years of existence in 2009. The characteristics of journalism have evolved with information technology. Interaction and hypertextuality are two elements that configure the essence of the relationship between journalism and new information and communication technologies. This research analyzes the profile and elements of on-line journalism, as well as the transmitter and receiver in this communication process. The research corpus is 10 international media and the following Mexican media: 100 newspapers, 30 television stations and 30 radio stations, all with more than 10 years’ on-line experience. Also, two hundred e-mails were sent out to journalists, leader writers and webmasters. En el 2009 se cumplen 15 años del inicio del periodismo en Internet. Las características del periodismo han evolucionado con la convergencia digital. La interactividad e hipertextualidad son dos elementos que configuran la esencia de la relación entre periodismo y tecnologías de la información y comunicación. En esta investigación se realizó el análisis del perfil y elementos del periodismo digital, así como el emisor y receptor de este proceso comunicativo. El corpus de la investigación fueron diez medios internacionales y los siguientes medios nacionales: 100 periódicos, 30 cadenas de televisión y 30 emisoras de radio que desde hace más de 10 años están en Internet. También se realizó el envío de 2.000 correos electrónicos a un corpus de otros tantos periodistas: reporteros, editorialistas y webmaster.

This paper presents a set of information and communication technologies developed with the goal to improve the practice of cued speech. They are based on three-dimensional (3D) graphics and are covering the entire end-to-end content chain: production, transmission, and visualization. Starting from defining a set of potential applications, the requirements of the targeted system for cued speech are set. The research and development path takes into account high-quality animation, real-time constraints, personalization, user acceptability and, equally important, the easiness and feasibility of the deployment. The latter led to a strong orientation toward open standards. The original components of the system include 3D graphics and animation encoders, streaming servers, and visualization engines. The core technology is validated in two real-time applications: a web service for text to animation conversion and a chat service supporting two or more users.

The reference services have evolved and changed since the introduction of information and communication technologies in academia. Since its inception at the end of the XIX century great changes have taken place, especially when we refer to access to the enormous range of data and information available. The article approaches concepts of reference services and portrays reference services in Brazilian university libraries. Its purpose is to characterize Brazilian reference librarians and the medium in which reference services occur. The methodology used in this study integrates elements of qualitative and quantitative research. To collect data, the questionnaire was developed and made available to digital librarians in reference services of Brazilian university libraries. The results show a majority, female, between the ages of 35 and 40, post-graduated for a maximum of ten years, with a higher education in librarianship working in a university library, for a maximum of ten years and in reference services for a maximum of five years, linked to some central library or library system and that seek continuous training in courses, training and events in the area in which it operates, in short periods. The reference services occur in digital and face-to-face, the main information sources are the periodicals, theses and dissertations, made available and accessed through the portal informational resources of electronic journals and databases, mainly in the health and biological areas. The communication process for the reference transaction occurs predominantly with the use e-mail and landline telephones, social networks are used by most libraries, with Facebook and Twitter being the most used, mainly in the dissemination of products and services. The communication is carried out by librarians, prevailing in the Portuguese language.

Efficient communication is one the most important instruments used for the purpose of generating change inside and outside an organization. It can contribute to adjusting attitudes and the manner of approaching the present and future challenges and to changing behavioral patterns. The mission and the objectives of organizational communication are highly interrelated with organizational change and environment characteristics, in which the organization functions. The communication performed by the public administration institution outside is an institutional communication, extra-organizational, which presents the following purposes: strengthening its image, stimulating an environment of trust and affinity from the citizens (Kotler & Lee, 2007). We are of opinion that the management of communication performed by a public administration institution features three fundamental aspects, relevant for institutional communicators when designing and managing the institutional communication: communication efficiency, communication process and the implications of the new information and communication technologies (ICT) for this process.

Condition Monitoring (CM) is the process of determining the state of a system according to a certain number of parameters. This ‘condition' is tracked over time to detect any developing fault or non desired behaviour. As the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) continue expanding the range of possible applications and gaining industrial maturity, the appearing of new sensor technologies such as Macro Fiber Composites (MFC) has opened a new range of possibilities for addressing a CM in industrial scenarios. The huge amount of data collected by MFC could overflow most conventional monitoring systems, requiring new approaches to take true advantage of the data. Big Data approach makes it possible to take profit of tons of data, integrating in the appropriate algorithms and technologies in a unified platform. This chapter proposes a real time condition monitoring approach, in which the system is continuously monitored allowing an online analysis.

While fake and distorted information has been part of our history, new information and communication technologies tremendously increased its reach and proliferation speed. Indeed, in current days, fake news has become a global issue, prompting reactions from both researchers and legislators in an attempt to solve this problem. However, fake news and misinformation are part of the larger landscape of online deception. Specifically, the purpose of this chapter is to present an overview of online deception to better frame and understand the problem of fake news. In detail, this chapter offers a brief introduction to social networking sites, highlights the major factors that render individuals more susceptible to manipulation and deception, detail common manipulation and deception techniques and how they are actively used in online attacks as well as their common countermeasures. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the double role or artificial intelligence in countering as well as creating fake news.
