Employee Behavioral Intentions in Adopting Information Technology

This study investigates the impact of perceived information technology (IT) beliefs on behavioural intention to use IT. The study is based on a national sample of 18 organisations from the private hotel industry in Greece, and on data obtained from 215 employees. The statistical method employed is structural equation modelling. The findings of the study suggest that employee attitudes positively and fully mediate the relationship between perceived IT beliefs and behavioural intention to use IT. Furthermore, it suggests that this relationship is influenced by individual factors such as task-technology fit, self-efficacy, individual contingencies, and social factors such as subjective norm. Finally, the study argues that women, younger people, well-educated employees, and people with managerial experience are keen in adopting new technologies in the hotel industry in Greece.

This study investigated the impact of electronic human resource management (e-HRM) implementation on the effectiveness of the HRM system. The framework of this study was guided by three theories: unified theory of acceptance and use of technology, the social exchange theory, and the leader-member exchange theory. Covariance-based structural equation modelling was used to test the proposed model and hypotheses. The sample consisted of 282 responses from the employees of two telecommunications companies in Jordan. The research findings suggest that performance expectancy had a significant positive effect on behavioural intention to use an e-HRM system, whereas effort expectancy did not. Facilitating conditions had a positive significant impact on e-HRM system usage. Top management support and the HRM role of line managers positively affected behavioural intention to use e-HRM and actual usage of e-HRM, whereas the effect of HR professionals on e-HRM usage was negative. Finally, the actual usage of e-HRM had a significant impact on HRM system effectiveness.

AbstractDigital technologies fundamentally transform teaching and learning in higher education environments, with the pace of technological change exacerbating the challenge. Due to the current pandemic situation, higher education environments are all now forced to move away from traditional teaching and learning structures that are simply no longer adaptable to the challenges of rapidly changing educational environments. This research develops a conceptual model and employs Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) using Partial least Squares (PLS) to examine the impact of information and digital literacy on 249 Finnish university staff and students’ intention to use digital technologies. The findings show the complex interrelationship between literacy skills and digital technologies among university staff and students. The results illustrate that information literacy has a direct and significant impact on intention to use; while, unlike our expectation, digital literacy does not have a direct impact on the intention to use. However, its effect is mediated through performance expectancy and effort expectancy. The authors suggest that to understand the changes that are taking place in higher education environment, more attention needs to be paid to redefining policies and strategies in order to enhance individuals’ willingness to use digital technologies within higher education environments.

This study aimed to assess the impact of information technology risks on security of information systems by following an analytical method based on the structural equation modeling (SEM). The study population was seven telecommunication companies in Yemen. A questionnaire was distributed to 356 participants, but only 218 forms were valid for analysis. The data was analyzed by the partial least squares (PLS). The study findings revealed that information technology risks had a negative impact on the security of information systems. The study recommended that the security of information systems should be strengthened so as to maintain the confidentiality of information, its availability and safety from risks, and to cope with speedy developments in information and communication technology.

One of the company's goals is business continuity. Companies can maintain their survival if supported by human resources who are also ready to follow the demands of changes in their environment. The COVID-19 pandemic is bringing very significant changes in human life today. This study aims to identify the influence of employee profiles and attitudes, subjective norms and information technology literacy on the willingness to adapt to the necessity of using information technology, especially during this pandemic time. This study uses the Theory of Reasoned Action approach as a theoretical basis, electronic questionnaires as a data collection method, and structural equation modeling to observe causal relationships between variables. The results of this study found that the model in this study had met the criteria for the model-fit test, and the only variable affecting employee attitudes was age. Subjective norm variables and information technology literacy have affected employees' intentions to adapt to information technology. The results of this study can be used by companies to design training programs that aim to improve information technology literacy and skills, especially for older employees.

Acquisition and frequency utilisation of Competitive Intelligence (CI) are critical strategic activities designed to assist firms in evaluating emerging trends in their business environments, major and potential threats, capabilities, and competitions for businesses today, particularly in the tourism and hotel sectors. However, there is still ambiguity about the impact of competitive-intelligence acquisition (CIA) and utilisation (CIU) on firms' performance, particularly for the hotel industry in a developing country such as Malaysia. Thus, the purposes of this research are to define the nature of CI practice in Malaysian hotels, and to illustrate the relative importance of various CIA types and sources to marketing managers in Malaysian hotels, moreover, to investigate the impact of CIA and CIU on the financial and non-financial performance of Malaysian hotels. A quantitative research design was adopted in this study. To obtain the necessary data for analysing the hypothesised model of the study, 505 questionnaires were issued to marketing managers in member hotels of the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH), and a total of 184 analyzable questionnaires were gathered, with a response rate of 34.44%. The research data were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling and statistical package for social sciences "SPSS". Despite that half of the responding hotels practiced CI informally, and many of these hotels began practicing CI five years ago, the study found that hotel marketing managers have high and medium interest levels for most types and sources of CI in Malaysia, these five CIA's types were the most important: (1) competitors, (2) customers, (3) human resources, (4) socio-cultural, and (5) Global. As well, these five CIA's sources were the most important: the internet and extranets, (2) customers, (3) electronic information services/intranets, (4) business associates, and (5) newspapers and periodicals, and industry trade associations. Furthermore, the results indicate that CIA and CIU had a positive and significant impact on hotels' performance, but CIU has the most effect. These findings enrich those in positions of power like owners, managers, and practitioners, as well as academicians, with greater knowledge of the relationship and influence of CIA and CIU on firms' performance, particularly for hospitality and tourism firms.

PurposeTechnological advances regarding artificial intelligence (AI) are affecting the transport sector. Although fully autonomous delivery, or self-driving trucks, are not operating currently, various AI applications have become fixed components of cargo vehicles. Since many research approaches primarily concentrate on the technical aspects of assistance systems (ASs), the economic question of how to improve efficiency is seldom addressed. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to apply an efficiency analysis to measure the performance of truck drivers supplying retail stores.Design/methodology/approachFor this comparative study, 90 professional truck drivers in three groups are compared with (1) trucks without AS, (2) trucks with AS that cannot be turned off and (3) trucks with AS that can be turned off. First, we build a model investigating the impact of performance expectation, effort expectation, social influence and facilitating conditions on the behavioural intention to use AS. Second, we explore the impact of truck drivers' behavioural intention on actual technology use, misuse and disuse; operationalize these constructs; and merge them with our behavioural constructs to create one econometric model.FindingsThe human–AI system was found to be the most efficient. Additionally, behavioural intention to use ASs did not lead to actual usage in the AI-alone observation group, but did in the human–AI group. Several in-depth analyses showed that the AI-alone group used AS at a higher level than the human–AI group, but manipulations through, for example, kickdowns or manual break operations led to conscious overriding of the cruise control system and, consequently, to higher diesel consumption, higher variable costs and lower efficiency of transport logistical operations.Research limitations/implicationsEfficiency analysis with data envelopment analysis is, by design, limited by the applied input and output factors.Originality/valueThis study represents one of the first quantitative efficiency analyses of the impact of digitalization on transport performance (i.e. truck driver efficiency). Furthermore, we build an econometric model combining behavioural aspects with actual technology usage in a real application scenario.

The Internet of Things (IoT) enabled technologies to have proliferated due to their abilities to capture and exchange quality information. This empirical study aims to investigate the factors influencing the intention to use IoT services in healthcare by young physicians. An integrated model based on the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and diffusion of innovations (DOI) theories are drawn upon and analyzed through a Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) with importance-performance map analysis (IPMA). Data were collected through a structured survey questionnaire. The results indicated that behavioural intention to use IoT in healthcare services vastly affected by the attitude and value co-creation. Attitude was found to be a principal determinant followed by the relative advantage towards behavioural intention to use IoT services. The novelty of this empirical study is that the proposed integrated model provides a meaningful application of the young physicians’ intention to use IoT in healthcare in developing countries.

The growth of new technologies and ambient intelligence is an emerging technology that enhances our life by adding sensors and networks. Ambient technology is a revolution on smart devices that makes human life efficient. Smartwatches are one that provides flexibility in people's daily lives by adopting sensing and reasoning of their activities and the surrounding environment. Analyzing a customer's behaviour towards smartwatches that use ambient intelligence is a critical issue. This article analyses the behavioural intention of customer satisfaction towards smartwatch users in an ambient environment with the help of structured equation modeling using partial least squares and fuzzy rough sets. The structural equation modeling is used to check the reliability and validity of the constructs whereas a fuzzy rough set is used for rule generation and studying customer satisfaction. This enhances the personalization of human beings with the assistance of human-computer interaction capabilities of ambient intelligence.

The authors examined the impact of perceived usability of websites of commercial service vendors on consumer’s affective, intentional, and behavioral variables. Reflective and formative usability measures were used within a nomological network of predictors (trust, reputation, and perceived fun), mediators (user satisfaction, and intention to use), decision to choose as the criteria, product involvement as a moderator, and controls. Results from structural equation modeling revealed that usability holds both direct and indirect paths, via trust and perceived fun, to user satisfaction. User satisfaction was positively related to the intention to use and partially mediated the relation between usability and intention to use. Furthermore, product involvement does not moderate the relation between usability and intention to use and the relation between user satisfaction and intention to use. Finally, intention to use provided an excellent prediction of the decision to choose. Limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed.
