The increased demand for potato by the Brazilian processing industry requires long term refrigerated storage, but after a few months, natural dormancy ends, and sprouts start to grow. Thus, sprout inhibitors are necessary to reduce the rate of growth and allow further storage. The purpose of research described here was to determine the effects clove and menthol essential oils have on the inhibition of sprout growth in non-dormant ‘Asterix’ tubers. Both eugenol and menthol treatments reduced the rate of sprout growth during storage at 8oC for up to 50 days. Eugenol and menthol essential oils diminished the rate of accumulation of reducing sugar, which are responsible for browning of French fries. Color after frying was within acceptable levels when the tubers were treated with eugenol or menthol essential oils.

AbstractThe aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the sensory properties of the table potato in relation to the use of natural sprout inhibitors during long-term storage. The material for the study consisted in four varieties of potato of the medium early group. The research was carried out in the Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute – National Research Institute Branch in Jadwisin in 2014-2015. After harvest potatoes were stored from the end of October to April at 5°C, at the relative humidity of 90-95%, without application of natural sprout inhibitors (control) and using the natural sprout inhibitors (essential oils). After storage, the potatoes were boiled and sensory evaluation was carried out, which includes qualities such as: over-cooking of the surface, texture, mealiness, flesh texture, taste and smell. Study results showed that long-term storage of potatoes treated with natural sprout inhibitors – peppermint, caraway and clove essential oils is significant for the changes in overcooking the surface, structure of potatoes and mealiness of tubers after cooking. The taste and smell of potato tubers depended only on the variety.

: In recent years, SLNs and NLCs are among the popular drug delivery systems studied for delivery of lipophilic drugs. Both systems have demonstrated several beneficial properties as an ideal drug-carrier, optimal drug-loading and good long-term stability. NLCs are getting popular due to their stability advantages and possibility to load various oil components either as an active or as a matrix. This review screens types of oils used till date in combination with solid lipid to form NLCs. These oils are broadly classified in two categories: Natural oils and Essential oils. NLCs offer range advantages in drug delivery due to the formation of imperfect matrix owing to the presence of oil. The type and percentage of oil used determines optimal drug loading and stability. Literature shows that variety of oils is used in NLCs mainly as matrix, which is from natural origin, triglycerides class. On the other hand, essential oils not only serve as a matrix but as an active. In short, oil is the key ingredient in formation of NLCs, hence needs to be selected wisely as per the performance criteria expected.

Abstract Essential oils and aromatic extracts (oleoresins, absolutes, concretes, resinoids) are often used as food flavorings and constituents of fragrance compositions. The flavor and fragrance industry observes significant growth in sales of some natural materials during the COVID-19 outbreak. Some companies worldwide are making false claims regarding their essential oils or blends to be effective (or indirectly points towards this conclusion) against coronaviruses even though the available data on the activity of plant materials against highly pathogenic human coronaviruses is very scarce. Our exploratory study aimed to develop pioneering knowledge, and provide the first experimental results on the inhibitory properties of hundreds of flavor & fragrance materials against SARS-CoV-2 main- and papain-like proteases. As essential oils are volatile products, they could provide an interesting subsidiary inhalation therapeutic strategy in the long term.

In this research, the effects of three different holding periods (6, 12 and 24 hours) prior to storage on the quality attributes of Starking Delicious apples were investigated during storage of 8 months at 0.5 ± 1.0 ºC. Changes in weight loss, flesh firmness, pH values, soluble dry matter amount, titratable acidity values, ascorbic acid contents, and total and reducing sugar content were determined. According to the results, the holding period showed statistically significant changes in the quality attributes of the apples (p < 0.05).

ObjectivesWorld’s largest outbreak of listeriosis in South Africa last year, remind us that Listeria monocytogenes contamination and growth is still of major concern in refrigerated RTE meats. The same time customers demand for clean label food safety solutions. Provian NDV, a fermented vinegar based powder, was developed to provide a clean label solution that inhibits Listeria monocytogenes during long term refrigerated storage. This document describes the effect of chemical derived acetates and Provian NDV, a novel vinegar based product, on the inhibition of Listeria monocytogenes in a cooked meat applicationMaterials and MethodsFive treatments of cured deli-style ham were tested. The pork ham contained 72–74% (w/w) moisture, 1.75 ± 0.1% (w/w) salt, and pH 6.2–6.4, 156 mg/kg sodium nitrite and 547 mg/kg sodium erythorbate. The treatments included a control without antimicrobials and different concentrations of a chemically derived acetates (0.5% and 0.75%) and Provian® NDV (0.5%, 0.65%). Cooked products were surface-inoculated with 3-log10 CFU/g of a cocktail of 5 strains of Listeria monocytogenes from the culture collection of Food research institute, Wisconsin University including serotypes 4b, 1/2a, and 1/2b. All strains were isolated from RTE- cooked meat products. Inoculated slices (100 g/package) were vacuum-packaged and stored at 4°C and 7°C for 8 to 12 wk. Per treatment triplicate samples were assayed by enumerating on modified Oxford Agar. One way ANOVA was used to analyze significance, p < 0.05. Except from the triplicate repeat, this study was conducted twice independently (trial 1, 5 treatments in triplicate and trial 2 including same treatments, also in triplicate.)ResultsControl Ham supported > 1 log increase of L. monocytogenes at 4- and 2-weeks storage at 4 and 7°C, respectively. In contrast, hams supplemented with 0.5 or 0.75% chemical acetates or 0.65% Provian® NDV inhibited the Listeria growth for 12 and 8 wk at 4 and 7°C, respectively. Inhibition of Listeria on ham supplemented with 0.5% Provian®NDV was further affected by pH and moisture. Ham supplemented with 0.5% Provian® NDV in the trial 1 (71.5% moisture, pH 6.2) delayed Listeria for 12 wk storage at 4°C, whereas individual samples of trial 1 (72.9% moisture, pH 6.3) supported growth (> 1 log increase) at 8 wk. Similar trends were observed at 7°C. The images below reflect the results of trial 1 only.ConclusionThis study confirms the efficacy of acetates on the inhibition of Listeria monocytogenes. Next, this study shows that a product based on natural fermented vinegar, Provian NDV, has a comparable growth inhibitive action in a cured ready-to eat ham. This illustrates that most relevant serotypes (4b, 1/2b and 1/2a) of Listeria moncytogenes can be controlled using an ingredient based on natural fermented vinegar.Figure 4.

SummaryKinetic analysis of the transport of 5-HT into the blood platelets of depressed patients and recovered depressive patients has shown that the rate of accumulation of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is significantly decreased both before and after recovery from the illness. This abnormality is corrected by both short and long-term lithium treatment. As a corollary to these studies, the effect of lithium in vitro on 5-HT uptake has been studied and the results are opposite to those reported in vivo. These findings suggest that lithium acts indirectly, and possible mechanisms of its action are discussed.

Potato is an important food crop and its production is susceptible to drought. Drought stress in crop growth is usually multiple- or long-term. In this study, the drought tolerant potato landrace Jancko Sisu Yari was treated with drought stress, rehydration and re-dehydration, and RNA-seq was applied to analyze the characteristics of gene regulation during these treatments. The results showed that drought-responsive genes mainly involved photosynthesis, signal transduction, lipid metabolism, sugar metabolism, wax synthesis, cell wall regulation, osmotic adjustment. Potato also can be recovered well in the re-emergence of water through gene regulation. The recovery of rehydration mainly related to patatin, lipid metabolism, sugar metabolism, flavonoids metabolism and detoxification besides the reverse expression of the most of drought-responsive genes. The previous drought stress can produce a positive responsive ability to the subsequent drought by drought hardening. Drought hardening was not only reflected in the drought-responsive genes related to the modified structure and cell components, but also in the hardening of gene expression or the “memory” of drought-responsive genes. Abundant genes involved photosynthesis, signal transduction, sugar metabolism, protease and protease inhibitors, flavonoids metabolism, transporters and transcription factors were subject to drought hardening or memorized drought in potato.

The concerns over safety and environmental impact of synthetic pesticides such as chlorpropham (CIPC) has stimulated interest in finding environmentally benign, natural sprout suppressants, including essential oils. The effects of Chenopodium ambrosioides and Lippia multiflora essential oils on sprout growth and decay of stored potatoes has been investigated. Formulations of essential oils with alumina, bentonite, or kaolin, both with and without Triton X-100 additive, were tested. These formulations have been compared to the pulverized plant materials themselves as well as wick-volatilized essential oils. The results showed that the tested oils possess compositions that make them suitable for application as sprout suppressants. Additionally, the formulation seems to be able to reduce the volatility of the essential oil and artificially extend dormancy of stored potatoes.
