This paper deals with the head-type torque sensor, on the basis of magnetoelastic effect, installed on the main shaft of machine tool for sensing cutting torque in order to monitor cutting process. The tests of two types of sensor are carried out under various cutting conditions. In order to confirm the accuracy of these sensors measuring cutting torque, the torque values obtained by two types of magnetic torque sensor are compared between measuring value of strain gauge and calculating value of cutting force experimental formula. The investigation demonstrates that the on-line monitoring of cutting force can be detected through measuring cutting torque by means of magnetoelastic torque sensor, and the cutting state can be shown by cutting parameters.

In orthopedic surgery, it is easy to do harm to surrounding tissues, so the study of bone cutting is necessary. In this article, a finite element model (FEM) of orthogonal bone cutting is developed. Cutting force intra-operatively can provide the surgeon with additional on-line information to support him to control quality of cutting surface. The obtained cutting force decreased little with cutting speed increasing, but ascended evidently with cutting depth increasing. The results of finite element simulations are aimed at providing optimization of cutting parameters and the basic information for hybrid force-velocity control of a robot-assisted bone milling system.

In this paper, the cutting experiment was used to study the influence of various cutting parameters on cutting force when rough turning titanium alloy (TC4) with the whole CBN tool. The results indicate that among the cutting speed, feed rate and cutting depth, the influence of the cutting depth is the most significant on cutting force; the next is the feed rate and the cutting speed is at least.

Drilling carbon fiber reinforced plastics and titanium (CFRP/Ti) stacks is one of the most important activities in aircraft assembly. It is favorable to use different drilling parameters for each layer due to their dissimilar machining properties. However, large aircraft parts with changing profiles lead to variation of thickness along the profiles, which makes it challenging to adapt the cutting parameters for different materials being drilled. This paper proposes a force sensorless method based on cutting force observer for monitoring the thrust force and identifying the drilling material during the drilling process. The cutting force observer, which is the combination of an adaptive disturbance observer and friction force model, is used to estimate the thrust force. An in-process algorithm is developed to monitor the variation of the thrust force for detecting the stack interface between the CFRP and titanium materials. Robotic orbital drilling experiments have been conducted on CFRP/Ti stacks. The estimate error of the cutting force observer was less than 13%, and the stack interface was detected in 0.25 s (or 0.05 mm) before or after the tool transited it. The results show that the proposed method can successfully detect the CFRP/Ti stack interface for the cutting parameters adaptation.

A methodology based on relax-type wavelet network was proposed for predicting surface roughness. After the influencing factors of roughness model were analyzed and the modified wavelet pack algorithm for signal filtering was discussed, the structure of artificial network for prediction was developed. The real-time forecast on line was achieved by the nonlinear mapping and learning mechanism in Elman algorithm based on the vibration acceleration and cutting parameters. The weights in network were optimized using genetic algorithm before back-propagation algorithm to reduce learning time.The validation of this methodology is carried out for turning aluminum and steel in the experiments and its prediction error is measured less than 3%.

The injection molding technology are usedgenerally for great number of pieces, in case of serial production while cutting processes arepreferred to piece (unit) or smaller number production.We used lathe and measured the main- and feeding-directional cutting force at differentengineering polymers (cast PA6, POM C and UHMW PE HD 1000). Abstract A single-degree-of-freedom active cutting fixture is employed to reveal and analyse the hysteretic nature of the lobed stability boundary in a simple machining experiment. Specifically, the seventh stability lobe of a regenerative cutting process is mapped using experimental, analytical, and computational techniques. Then, taking width of cut as a control parameter, the transition from stable cutting to chatter is observed experimentally. The cutting stability is found to possess a substantial hysteresis so that either stable or chattering tool motions can exist at the same nominal cutting parameters, depending on initial conditions. This behavior is predicted by applying nonlinear regenerative chatter theory to an empirical characterization of the cutting force dependence on chip thickness. Time-domain simulations that incorporate both the nonlinear cutting force dependence on chip thickness and the multiple-regenerative effect due to the tool leaving the cut are shown to agree both qualitatively and quantitatively with experiment.

Stainless steels have gained much attention to be an alternative solution for many manufacturing industries due to their high mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, owing to their high ductility, their low thermal conductivity and high tendency to work hardening, these materials are classed as materials difficult to machine. Therefore, the main aim of the study was to examine the effect of cutting parameters such as cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut on the response parameters including surface roughness (Ra), tangential cutting force (Fz) and cutting power (Pc) during dry turning of AISI 316L using TiCN-TiN PVD cermet tool. As a methodology, the Taguchi L27 orthogonal array parameter design and response surface methodology (RSM)) have been used. Statistical analysis revealed feed rate affected for surface roughness (79.61%) and depth of cut impacted for tangential cutting force and cutting power (62.12% and 35.68%), respectively. According to optimization analysis based on desirability function (DF), cutting speed of 212.837 m/min, 0.08 mm/rev feed rate and 0.1 mm depth of cut were determined to acquire high machined part quality

Abstract Cortical bones are semi-brittle and anisotropic, this brings the challenge to suppress vibration and avoid undesired fracture in precise cutting processes in surgeries. In this paper, we proposed a novel analytical model to represent cutting processes of cortical bones, and we used to evaluate cutting forces and fracture toughness, and investigate the formations of chips and cracks under varying bone osteon cutting angles and depths. To validate the proposed model, the experiments are conducted on orthogonal cuttings over cortical bones to investigate the impact of bone osteon cutting angle and depth on cutting force, crack initialization and growth, and fracture toughness of cortical bone microstructure. The experimental results highly agreed with the prediction by the proposed model in sense that (1) curly, serrated, grainy and powdery chips were formed when the cutting angle was set as 0°, 60°, 90°, and 120°, respectively. (2) Bone materials were removed dominantly by shearing at a small depth of cut from 10 to 50 µm, and by a mixture of pealing, shearing, and bending at a large depth of cut over 100 µm at different cutting orientations. Moreover, it was found that a cutting path along the direction of crack initialization and propagation benefited to suppress the fluctuation of cutting force thus reduce the vibration. The presented model has theoretical and practical significance in optimizing cutting tools and operational parameters in surgeries.

In the cutting process, cutting force is one of the important physical parameters, which affects the generation of cutting heat, tool life and surface precision of workpiece directly. In this paper an orthogonal design of experiment and subsequent data is analyzed using high speed finish hard cutting GCr15 whose hardness is 65HRC. Cutting speed is 200-400m/min, to study the influence of cutting parameters on cutting force, cutting force empirical model has obtained from least square method.
