The university is considered one of the engines of growth in a local economy or its market area, since its direct contributions consist of 1) employment of faculty and staff, 2) services to students, and supply chain links vendors, all of which define the University’s Market area. Indirect contributions consist of those agents associated with the university in terms of community and civic events. Each of these activities represent economic benefits to their host communities and can be classified as the economic impact a university has on its local economy and whose spatial market area includes each of the above agents. In addition are the critical links to the University, which can be considered part of its Demand and Supply chain. This paper contributes to the field of Public/Private Impact Analysis, which is used to substantiate the social and economic benefits of cooperating for economic resources. We use Census data on Output of Goods and Services, Labor Income on Salaries, Wages and Benefits, Indirect State and Local Taxes, Property Tax Revenue, Population, and Inter-Industry to measure economic impact (Implan, 2016).

This article analyzes their university backgrounds. Tourism can promote job growth and income growth in regional economies. Policymakers in the regional government promote tourism to bring outside money into the local economy. Using accommodation tax revenue data published by the South Carolina Department of Revenue, this paper estimates the employment impact of tourism spending in South Carolina counties. The OLS regression results show that increased tourism spending, as measured by the accommodation tax, leads to increased total county employment, increased county employment in the accommodation sector (NAICS 721), increased county employment in full-service restaurant sector (NAICS 7221) and increased county employment in arts, entertainment, and recreation sector (NAICS 71).

This article investigates the impact of Communist historical legacies on the variation of sub-national regimes in a federal state. It focuses on the Russian Federation and studies the role of sub-national variations of membership rates in the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) during the 1970s and 1980s as a predictor of regional democracy in Russia in the 2000s. Using a unique dataset collected by the authors, the article shows that past CPSU membership rates continue to have a significant and negative impact on democracy at the sub-national level. The article also investigates possible mechanisms of this effect and links them to the persistence of Soviet bureaucracies and their role in exercising control over regional economies. These findings contribute to understanding the complex nexus of federalism and sub-national democracy and to the study of the role of communist legacies in democratisation.

Abstract Many Mediterranean-type climates around the world will face increased risks of wildfires as a consequence of climate change. In this study we consider the case of Portugal and estimate the impact of the increasing risk of forest fires on tourism. Using data for 278 municipalities for the 2000–2016 period, we find a considerable negative impact of burned areas on the number of tourist arrivals, both domestic and inbound. We go beyond the traditional impact analysis and provide predictions for 2030 and 2050. The estimated annual costs to the Portuguese economy due to the impact of burned areas in 2030 range between €17.03 and 24.18 million for domestic tourist arrivals and between €18.26 and 38.08 million for inbound ones. In 2050, those costs will increase at least fourfold. These findings underscore the importance of taking the forest fire risks into account when planning local investments.

The impact of coronavirus on the socio-economic development of Russian regions inevitably depends on the structure of their economy, which is analyzed in the article on the basis of official data on the employment structure. The contribution of different sectors of the economy (primary, secondary, and tertiary), the role of informal employment and the budget sector, and the share of employment in the most affected industries are evaluated. Not only short-term, but also long-term structural problems of the regional economy are highlighted. It is shown that the negative impact of coronavirus mainly on the service sector in the context of the Russian Federation subjects is evident in federal cities, in economically underdeveloped regions with an underdeveloped real sector of the economy, as well as regions that specialize in certain types of services (tourism, foreign trade, complex services). For economically underdeveloped regions, the impact of coronavirus is deepened by a high share of the informal sector (which limits the possibility of obtaining state support), but is softened by an increased share of employees who receive wages from the budget system. The reduced share of the service sector in agricultural regions means that they are less dependent on coronavirus, but it confirms the need to develop the service sector as a basis for improving the quality of life of the population. At the same time, almost everywhere there is a need to restructure the service sector: reducing the role of simple services (primarily trade), in favor of complex ones related to high technologies and innovations and to the social sphere, especially health.

This paper assesses the economic impact of a cultural event on a local economy. The event analysed is the Umbria Jazz music festival, which is held annually in July in the city of Perugia in Italy. The relevance of this case study concerns the methodological problems involved in estimating the number of visitors attracted by an event characterized by numerous free concerts. In addition, through the choice of the components of expenditure and the impact analysis model, the proposed approach represents an advanced synthesis of the paths which have been developing in the literature.

This research study aims at assessing the impact of the Algerian Dinar exchange rates variations on the Algerian trade balance during the period from 1990 to 2016.To achieve such an aim, we adopted a measuring model that suits local economy reality. The chosen model assessment was carried out by means of the OLS method and the cointegration test to notice if there are long term relationship between the dependent variable and interpreting ones. Econometrics analysis showed that exchange rate variations have negative impact on trade balance as an inverse relationship exists between exchange rate variations and trade balance, which is the exact opposite of what is stated by economic theory, the cointegration test showed no relations at all between dependent and interpreting variables in the long run. We concluded that Granger causality test gave results which rule out any causal relationship between dependent and independent variables as immediate response functions test showed weak trade balance response to any shock due to exchange rate variations of the local currency during the studied period.

The increase in both industrialization and tourism in Kasongan village famous with its pottery being the tourism Village since 1988, radically altered the local economy and domestic life. Based on oral history, survey, and documentary sources, this paper examine the impact of economics globalization to the diversity of culture in Kasongan. Globalization has two faces. If it can be managed properly, globalization can certainly give sufficient benefit to the country. The result of study indicated that pasedhuluran kinship systems in pottery production chain as one of social capital in socio-economic development in Kasongan, play an important role. This can be seen in terms of hiring local labor, then the pottery associated with the ordering system, and the use of the showroom to promote their pottery. Based on this note that the negative impact of globalization, especially the pottery in Kasongan indsutry can be minimized by pasedhuluran system.
