This article sets up mathematic model for the traffic circle to determine how best to control traffic flow. In order to make the traffic at the circle intersection smooth in maximum, this model figures out the largest traffic capacity through Wardrop’s formula. When the signal control is needed, a linkage time solving model is set up, which proves the number of seconds of every green light and work out the delay time. At last, the simulation software VISSIM is used for an example to work out the average delay time under the signal control. The result matches with this model.

We proposed a signal control optimization model for urban main trunk line intersections. Four-phase intersection was analyzed and modeled based on the Cell Transmission Model (CTM). CTM and signal control model in our study had both been improved for multi-intersections by three-phase theory and information-exchanging. To achieve a real-time application, an improved genetic algorithm (GA) was proposed finally, the DISCO traffic simulation software was used for numerical simulation experiment, and comparisons with the standard GA and CTM were reported in this paper. Experimental results indicate that our searching time is less than that of SGA by 38%, and our method needs only 1/3 iteration time of SGA. According to our DISCO traffic simulation processing, compared with SGA, if the input traffic flow is changed from free phase to synchronized phase, for example, less than 900 vel/h, the delay time can reduce to 87.99% by our method, and the minimum delay time is 77.76% of existing method. Furthermore, if input traffic volume is increased to 1200 vel/h or more at the synchronized phase, the summary and minimum values of average delay time are reduced to 81.16% and 75.83%, respectively, and the average delay time is reduced to 17.72 seconds.

In the existing bandwidth-based methods, through traffic flows are considered as the coordination objects and offered progression bands accordingly. However, at certain times or nodes in the road network, when the left-turn traffic flows have a higher priority than the through traffic flows, it would be inappropriate to still provide the progression bands to the through traffic flows; the left-turn traffic flows should instead be considered as the coordination objects to potentially achieve better control. Considering this, a general maximum progression model to concurrently synchronize left-turn and through traffic flows is established by using a time-space diagram. The general model can deal with all the patterns of the left-turn phases by introducing two new binary variables into the constraints; that is, these variables allow all the patterns of the left-turn phases to deal with a single formulation. By using the measures of effectiveness (average delay time, average vehicle stops, and average travel time) acquired by a traffic simulation software, VISSIM, the validity of the general model is verified. The results show that, compared with the MULTIBAND, the proposed general model can effectively reduce the delay time, vehicle stops, and travel time and, thus, achieve better traffic control.

This article is on the purpose of developing an isolated tram signal priority control strategy based on logic rule for modern tram system. The designed method is presented with features that can ensure the intersection operates in a proper manner on the premise of tram priority and avoid vehicle queue overflow when the tram passes. In this study, the new method description consists of two parts: (1) the detector locations are determined, which include the upstream detector, the upstream trigger detector, the downstream detector, and the queuing detector upon entry approach to the intersection; (2) the corresponding priority logical algorithm for signal control is designed. The proposed method is experimentally examined in a tram intersection in Huaian city, China. In the process of the experiment, the detector layout scheme and optimal priority control model are simulated and verified using the VisVAP module of the Vissim simulation software. In the experimental results, the designed scheme significantly decreases average delay than the fixed timing signal control method, while it also can prevent the vehicle queue from overflowing compared to the absolute priority actuated control scheme.

The concept of signal-free management at road junctions is tailored for Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs), in which the conventional signal control is replaced by various right-of-way assignment policies. First-Come-First-Served (FCFS) is the most commonly used policy. In most proposed strategies, although the traffic signals are replaced, the organization of vehicle trajectory remains the same as that of traffic lights. As a naturally signal-free strategy, roundabout has not received enough attention. A key motivation of this study is to theoretically compare the performance of signalized intersection (I-Signal), intersection using FCFS policy (I-FCFS), roundabout using the typical major-minor priority pattern (R-MM), and roundabout adopting FCFS policy (R-FCFS) under pure CAVs environment. Queueing theory is applied to derive the theoretical formulas of the capacity and average delay of each strategy. M/G/1 model is used to model the three signal-free strategies, while M/M/1/setup model is used to capture the red-and-green light switch nature of signal control. The critical safety time gaps are the main variables and are assumed to be generally distributed in the theoretical derivation. Analytically, I-Signal has the largest capacity benefiting from the ability to separate conflict points in groups, but in some cases it will have higher delay. Among the other three signal-free strategies, R-FCFS has the highest capacity and the least average control delay, indicating that the optimization of signal-free management of CAVs based on roundabout setting is worthy of further study.

For the purpose of improving the efficiency of traffic signal control for isolate intersection under oversaturated conditions, a multi-objective optimization algorithm for traffic signal control is proposed. Throughput maximum and average queue ratio minimum are selected as the optimization objectives of the traffic signal control under oversaturated condition. A simulation environment using VISSIM SCAPI was utilized to evaluate the convergence and the optimization results under various settings and traffic conditions. It is written by C++/CRL to connect the simulation software VISSIM and the proposed algorithm. The simulation results indicated that the signal timing plan generated by the proposed algorithm has good efficiency in managing the traffic flow at oversaturated intersection than the commonly utilized signal timing optimization software Synchro. The update frequency applied in the simulation environment was 120 s, and it can meet the requirements of signal timing plan update in real filed. Thus, the proposed algorithm has the capability of searching Pareto front of the multi-objective problem domain under both normal condition and over-saturated condition.

Internet usage has become an essential part of our daily lives, it has become universal. The aim of this research is to consider existing Internet-based networks with regard to their support for the remote operation of robotic technology, in particular, looking at transmission speed and delay time as it relates to teleoperation. Currently dedicated connections are typically used when a high Quality of Service (QoS) is required for mission critical services or safety-critical systems (SCS), however such connections are very expensive to set up and maintain. Therefore, this study focuses on modifying existing internet networks in a manner to provide a better QoS with little additional cost. Using a number of microcontrollers, computers, and routers, two different protocols were used to control a robotic device remotely. Use of the Point-to-Point Tunnelling Protocol (PPTP) used for implementing a Virtual Private Network (VPN) was found to provide higher average transmission speeds compared to the using a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) which is a regular internet connection.

Abstract A graphical method is proposed for removing the “drudge work” of looking up property values and solving the conservation equations and second law in an Applied Thermodynamics course. The vehicle used is VisSim simulation software. The method requires the student to perform the thermodynamic analysis and set up the equations, but the computer finds the property values and solves the equations. This concept allows the student to explore various aspects of the topics covered in such a course, including power and refrigeration cycles, mixtures and psychrometrics, and combustion and equilibrium. Substantial design type problems can be solved easily, as can complicated analyses that are too difficult and time consuming for traditional solution methods.
