This paper introduces a kinetic model to simulate a foam-core composite sandwich panel impacted by a solid semi-sphere. A modified Hashin failure criterion, which consider failure modes of fiber breakage, matrix cracking and matrix crushing, are implemented into the model analysis by using a self-developed VUMAT subroutine. Cohesive elements with zero-thickness are used in the composite laminates model and quadratic nominal stress criterion is used to predict the delamination initiation during the impact. A crushable foam model is used for foam core. The time history curve of contact force is obtained and shows a good correlation with the experimental data.

The residual compressive strength of a foam core sandwich panel after low-velocity impact was studied by using experimental and analytical methods. The test specimens were compressed uniaxially after they were subjected to a low-velocity-impact. From the observation in the test, one can conclude that the subsequent core crushing around the impact region is the major failure mode in the sandwich structure. A failure criterion named Damage Propagation Criterion was proposed to predict the residual compressive load bearing capability of the low-velocity impacted composite sandwich panel. The characteristic value used in this failure criterion can be calculated by an analytical model developed or by conducting the Sandwich Compression after Impact test.

ABSTRACTA method was developed to predict numerically the damage of composite laminates with multiple plies under low-velocity impact loading. The Puck criterion for 3D stress states was adopted to model the intralaminar damage including matrix cracking and fibre breakage, and to obtain the orientation of the fracture plane due to matrix failure. According to interlaminar delamination mechanism, a new delamination criterion was proposed. The influence of transverse and through-thickness normal stress, interlaminar shear stress and damage conditions of adjacent plies on delamination was considered. In order to predict the impact-induced damage of composite laminates with more plies quickly and efficiently, an approach, which can predict the specific damage of several plies in a single solid element, was proposed by interpolation on the strains of element integration points. Moreover, the proposed model can predict specific failure modes. A good agreement between the predicted delamination shapes and sizes and the experimental results shows correctness of the developed numerical method for predicting low-velocity impact damage on composite laminates.

AbstractIn this study, the foam sandwich panels were manufactured by integrating top facesheet and bottom facesheet with pyramidal lattice stitched core to overcome the weak interface between the core and skins of the sandwich structures. Low-velocity impact test and numerical simulation were conducted to reveal the failure mechanisms and energy absorption capacity at sandwich composite with foam core, different strut stitched foam core under different impact energy. The experimental results show showed that the strut core can improve the impact resistance of the specimen, and which is closely related to the diameter of the strut core. Compared with foam sandwich structure, pyramidal lattice stitched foam sandwich composites have comparable specific energy absorptions. The failure modes were also analyzed which is: fiber breakage, delamination, foam deformation and strut core breakage. The research presented here confirms that numerical simulation show good agreement with the experiment.

In this study, a new approach for predicting damage and specific failure modes in laminated fiber reinforced composites is presented. The new method is based on the peridynamic theory and models individual plies, and represents fiber and matrix materials in each ply explicitly. These features enable analysis of laminates with arbitrary fiber orientation in a convenient manner. Additionally, a new failure mode identification algorithm has been developed and implemented. Instead of the conventional peridynamic damage parameter, the new algorithm works with individual broken bonds, which makes identification of different failure modes including matrix cracking, fiber breakage, and delamination straight-forward and unambiguous. The new peridynamic approach is demonstrated by considering the low-velocity impact damage on composite laminates with and without translaminar reinforcements. The translaminar reinforcement technique considered in this study is z-pinning; two different geometric configurations of z-pins are explored. The impact testing and the post-impact nondestructive evaluations with ultrasonic c-scans are performed at the Air Force Research Laboratory to characterize the delaminations. The impact tests on different samples are simulated using the current peridynamic approach. The predicted impact damage failure modes are compared against the experimental measurements. The new approach is shown to capture low-velocity impact damage both quantitatively and qualitatively.

In this paper, biaxial warp-knitted fabrics were produced with different high tenacity polyester linear density and inserted yarns density. The low-velocity impact property of flexible composites made of polyurethane as matrix and biaxial warp-knitted fabric as reinforcement has been investigated. The effect of impactor shape and initial impact energy on the impact response of flexible composite is tested. The results show that the initial impact energy have minor effect on the impact response of the biaxial warp-knitted flexible composites. The impact resistance of flexible composite specimen increases with the increase of high tenacity polyester linear density and inserted yarns density. The damage morphology of flexible composite materials is completely different under different impactor shapes. The findings have theoretical and practical significance for the applications of biaxial warp-knitted flexible composite.

AbstractProfiled hollow core sandwich panels (SPs) and their components (outer layers and core) were manufactured with ponderosa and lodgepole pine wood strands to determine the effects of low-velocity impact forces and to observe their energy absorption (EA) capacities and failure modes. An instrumented drop weight impact system was applied and the tests were performed by releasing the impact head from 500 mm for all the specimens while the impactors (IMPs) were equipped with hemispherical and flat head cylindrical heads. SPs with cavities filled with a rigid foam insulation material (SPfoam) were also tested to understand the change in EA behavior and failure mode. Failure modes induced by both IMPs to SPs were found to be splitting, perforating, penetrating, core crushing and debonding between the core and the outer layers. SPfoams absorbed 26% more energy than unfilled SPs. SPfoams with urethane foam suffer less severe failure modes than SPs. SPs in a ridge-loading configuration absorbed more impact energy than those in a valley-loading configuration, especially when impacted by a hemispherical IMP. Based on the results, it is evident that sandwich structure is more efficient than a solid panel concerning impact energy absorption, primarily due to a larger elastic section modulus of the core’s corrugated geometry.

The dependency of the static residual tensile strength for the Glass Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) laminates after impact on the impact energy level and indent shape is investigated. In this study, two different laminates, unidirectional, [0°2]s) and TRI (tri-axial, (±45°/0°)2]s), were prepared using the vacuum infusion method, and an impact indent on the respective laminates was created at different energy levels with pyramidal and hemispherical impactors. Impact damage patterns, such as matrix cracking, delamination, debonding and fiber breakage, could be observed on the GFRP laminates by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and it is found that those were dependent on the impactor head shape and laminate structure. Residual in-plane tensile strength of the impacted laminates was measured and the reduction of the strength is found to be dependent upon the impact damage patterns. Furthermore, in this study, stress concentrations in the vicinity of the indents were determined from full-field stress distribution obtained by three-dimensional Digital Image Correlation (3D DIC) measurement. It was found that the stress concentration was associated with the reduction of the residual strength for the GFRP laminates.

This research work presents a hierarchical method able to reconstruct the time history of the impact force on a composite wing stringer-skin panel by using the structural responses measured by a set of surface bonded ultrasonic transducers. Time reversal method was used to identify the impact location by the knowledge of structural responses recorded from a set of excitation points arbitrarily chosen on the plane of the structure. Radial basis function interpolation approach was then used to calculate the transfer function at the impact point and reconstruct the impact force history. Experimental results showed the high level of accuracy of the proposed impact force reconstruction method for a number of low-velocity impact sources and energies.

AbstractDue to the properties of shape memory effect and super-elasticity, shape memory alloy (SMA) is added into glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) face-sheets of foam core sandwich panels to improve the impact resistence performance by many researchers. This paper tries to discuss the failure mechanism of sandwich panels with GF/ epoxy face-sheets embedded with SMA wires and conventional 304 SS wire nets under low-velocity impact and compression after impact (CAI) tests. The histories of contact force, absorbed energy and deflection during the impact process are obtained by experiment. Besides, the failure modes of sandwich panels with different ply modes are compared by visual inspection and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). CAI tests are conducted with the help of digital image correlation (DIC) technology. Based on the results, the sandwich panels embedded with SMA wires can absorb more impact energy, and show relatively excellent CAI performance. This is because the SMA wires can absorb and transmit the energy to the outer region of GFRP face-sheet due to the super-elasticity-behavior. The failure process and mechanism of the CAI test is also discussed.
