Effect of cryogenic treatments on mechanical properties of 2A11 aluminum alloy were studied. Cryogenic box with program control and electrical resistance furnace were employed to perform cryogenic treatment processes as well as heat treatment processes. Impact tester, tensile tester, three-coordinates measuring machine, high precision caliper and standard metallography were used to carry out tests. The influences of different process parameters on mechanical properties of 2A11 aluminum alloy were compared, and the results showed that cryogenic treatment could improve mechanical properties of 2A11 aluminum alloy. The dimensional stability increases after cryogenic treatment once, and increases further after cryogenic treatment again.

A severe thermal stress occurs during start up/shutdown transients in thick walled components of high temperature power plants. Thus, a precise consideration of this issue is very important. Many researchers have studied low-cycle fatigue at high temperatures and small box-type electrical resistance furnaces have been developed for small-sized fatigue specimens. However, these small-scale electrical resistance furnaces need precise temperature calibrations because temperature control is difficult in a small space. Thus, a method for the temperature calibration of a box-type electrical resistance furnace is investigated and calibration procedures are proposed in this study.

Cryogenic treatment is a supplemental structural and mechanical properties refinement process to conventional heat treatment processes, quenching, and tempering. Cryogenic treatment encourages the improvement of material properties and durability by means of microstructural alteration comprising phase transfer, particle size, and distribution. These effects are almost permanent and irreversible; furthermore, cryogenic treatment is recognized as an eco-friendly, nontoxic, and nonexplosive process. In addition, to encourage the application of sustainable techniques in mechanical and manufacturing engineering and to improve productivity in current competitive markets, cryo-treatment can be considered as a promising process. However, while improvements in the properties of materials after cryogenic treatment are discussed by the majority of reported studies, the correlation between microstructural alteration and mechanical properties are unclear, and sometimes the conducted investigations are contradictory with each other. These contradictions provide different approaches to perform and combine cryogenic treatment with pre-and post-processing. The present literature survey, mainly focused on the last decade, is aimed to address the effects of cryogenic treatment on microstructural alteration and to correlate these changes with mechanical property variations as a consequence of cryo-processing. The conclusion of the current review discusses the development and outlines the trends for the future research in this field.

The mechanical properties of a 7A04 aluminum alloy were improved by deformation strengthening and phase transformations strengthening adopting thermomechanical treatment, whose process include solution treatment, deformation treatment and ageing treatment in turn. The paper focuses on the influences of deforming degree and ageing process on microstructure and properties of 7A04 aluminum alloy. The experimental results show that hardness increased with increasing deformation ratio, and the value are greatly higher than that of samples after solution treatment. The results of ageing after deformation show that the hardness enhanced with prolonging the ageing time, which reach the peak value at 16 hours. In addition, the microstructure became more homogeneous and the grain was refined obviously by metallography microscope observation. The second phase precipitate dispersedly to strengthen the alloy. Above all, in order to obtain the better mechanical properties, the optimal thermomechanical treatment processes are solution treatment at 470°C for 2h, deformation with ratio of 40% as well as ageing at 120°C for 16h.

This paper describes how deep cryogenic treatment at 98K produces changes in the microstructure of a heat-treated aluminum alloy. It was observed how the sub-micrometric particles increased near and at the grain boundaries. This slight precipitation did not produce any modification in static mechanical properties. However, the compressive residual stresses of the material were higher after compared to before the treatment. Both these effects can enhance the life of this alloy through cryogenic treatment.

By using cryogenic treatment on 7A04 aluminum alloy tested with micrographic analysis and mechanical properties test, we studied the impact on mechanical properties of 7A04 aluminum alloy The results showed that the strength of 7A04 aluminum alloy could be highly increased and the grain size would be reduced in the process through being treated in 480°C/80min + aging in 120°C/4h + cryogenic treatment + aging at 120°C/16h.7A04 aluminum alloy are more fully recrystallized to grain refinement and the tensile strength of it can be increased to 720Mpa after the treatment.

This study demonstrated nanoindentation techniques of investigating the effects of size and feature in a microstructure on the mechanical properties of rheology-forged aluminum alloy. Mechanical properties and tribological characteristics of rheology-forged Al2024 wrought aluminum alloy in terms of T6 heat treatment were investigated by varying the aging time by nanoindentation and nanoscratch techniques. By nanoindentation/nanoscratch tests and atomic force microscopy, it was demonstrated that the 4 hour aged material exhibites the highest hardness because of the intermediate precipitate phase θ″, which was precipitated by T6 heat treatment at 495°C. Moreover, the friction coefficients in the precipitates in the eutectic phase region were lower than those in the primary α phase region.
