The Igbo people survived a civil war that raged between 1967 and 1970 and that devastated their land and reduced their population because of more than three million deaths. They were confronted with the challenges of beginning life afresh from scratch with almost nothing. Since then, they have allegedly been marginalised on a continuous basis by the Nigerian government. This notwithstanding the people with their communal spirit, which saw them through the civil war, have continued to cement their survival resolve in the post-war era. The aim of this article was to study the Igbo communal system as the bedrock of Igbo progress, especially in the past 50 years and recommends it as the basic principle of Igbo survival in Nigeria. It considers Igbo communal spirit as a veritable panacea against the recent agitations for secession by the people as that would guarantee Igbo people an ample space to operate in Nigeria. The methodology used in this article is a qualitative phenomenological method. This was carried out by interviewing some members of Igbo society, observing and interpreting events in Igbo society and as documented in literatures. It was found that Igbo people have really done well for themselves despite the seeming marginalisation by sticking to their resilient spirit. This study concluded that instead of seeking for independence from Nigeria, the Igbo people need to be mindful of their resilient communal spirit and reinforce it in all spheres of life. This would make them more relevant in the country’s affairs than they are currently.

AbstractAlthough it is well-known that people feel disconnected from their past and future selves, the underlying mechanism supporting this phenomenon is unknown. To help fill this gap, we considered a basic principle of perception. As objects increase in distance from an observer, they also become logarithmically compressed in perception (i.e., not differentiated from one another), making them hard to distinguish. Here, we report four studies that suggest we may feel disconnected from distant selves, in part, because they are increasingly indiscriminable with temporal distance from the present self. In Studies 1-3, participants made trait ratings across various time points in the past and future. We found that participants compressed their past and future selves, relative to their present self. This effect was preferential to the self and could not be explained by the alternative possibility that individuals simply perceive arbitrary self-change with time irrespective of temporal distance. In Study 4, we tested for neural evidence of temporal self-compression by having participants complete trait ratings across time points while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Representational similarity analysis (RSA) was used to determine if neural self-representations are compressed with temporal distance, as well. We found evidence of temporal self-compression in areas of the default network, including medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC). Specifically, neural pattern similarity between self-representations was logarithmically compressed with temporal distance. Taken together, these findings reveal a “temporal self-compression” effect, with temporal selves becoming increasingly indiscriminable with distance from the present.Significance StatementFor centuries, great thinkers have struggled to understand why we feel disconnected from our past and future selves. Insight may come from a basic principle of perception: as objects become distant, they also become less discriminable, or ‘compressed.’ In Studies 1-3, we demonstrate that people’s ratings of their own personality become increasingly less differentiated as they consider more distant past and future selves. In Study 4, we found neural evidence that the brain compresses self-representations with time, as well. When we peer out a window, objects close to us are in clear view whereas distant objects are hard to tell apart. We provide novel evidence that self-perception may operate similarly, with the nuance of distant selves increasingly harder to perceive.

Nowadays, the customers often feel in danger in current unstable and unpredictable period of industrial, political, social and economic transition. In this environment, the weakened individuals find themselves in search of security references, identity, well-being, dream, emotion and re-enchantment, and consequently they want to return to the past and their memories, yearning for a sense of security and stability. They become nostalgic, seeking values of authenticity. On this basis, enterprises develop a strategy of nostalgic brands that appeal to the emotions, experiences and memories of the consumers. As a result, the basis of relations between the consumer and the brand is nostalgia, which is a positive attitude towards brands that are directly or indirectly related to the consumer’s past. The aim of this article is to evaluate the possibilities of implementation of the strategy of nostalgic brand. The results of own empirical research conducted in 2018 on a group of 16 international experts are presented. Both French and Polish experts positively evaluated the potential of nostalgic brands. Some differences in the opinions of the French and Polish experts are visible. The proposition of model of the nostalgic brands positioning is also presented. According to the experts, the basic principle for positioning of the nostalgic brand is having a strong brand history. Nostalgic brands are recommended for the following sectors: fashion, food, cosmetic (especially perfumes), luxury products, automotive, high-tech (music), entertainment and decorative. The results can serve as a guide for managers in implementing the strategy of nostalgic brand and can help identify the crucial elements needed for positioning of the brand based on the nostalgic feelings.

The development of marine reflection methods over the past few years has shown the technical and economic advantages that can be derived from highly repetitive nonexplosive sources. Pursuing the idea to its limits the Geophyiscal Division of SNPA’s Research Center has designed and implemented a new seismic method. The source energy is released into the water in the form of discrete pulses of the same sign and essentially the same amplitude, according to a long pseudo‐random sequence. This process is not restricted to any particular source; it can be used with a number of different sources, provided they can reach a sufficient rate of repetition. The basic principle has been checked with a sparker, chosen for its flexibility; however, conventional sources such as air and steam guns were also tested. Comparison section indicate improved quality for the new method due to multiplication of seismic ray paths and a more adequate frequency spectrum. Additional benefits are maximum flexibility in recording and processing and reduction of costs.

Intercropping has been practiced worldwide in both traditional and sustainable agriculture to feed the growing population. This study aims to analyze the research status and evolution of intercropping, to identify the influential authors, research centers, and articles, and to reveal the main research topics between 1992 and 2020 based on the Web of Science Core Collection database. The results show that the volume of publications in this field has increased rapidly over the past three decades. The analysis identifies the top three authors (i.e., Meine Van Noordwijk, Wenyu Yang, and Teja Tscharntke), top three contributing organizations (i.e., the World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF), the Chinese Academy of Science, and the INRA), and three most productive countries (i.e., the USA, India, and China). Co-occurrence analysis demonstrates that studies on intercropping can be divided into four clusters as centered by keywords of intercropping/maize, biodiversity/conservation, agroforestry, and carbon, respectively. Lal 2004 is the most influential study with the greatest number of citations and Agroforestry Systems is the most utilized journal. Perspectives on future studies were also given. This study helps researchers to clarify the current research status in the field of intercropping and put forward its future research.

It is acceptable that the uninhabited islands of small size, due to their isolation from the mainland, offer remarkable habitats for the distribution and conservation of significant protected flora and fauna species. Many of these islands hosted in the past settlements, castles, etc., that now have been abandoned, though the charasteristics of the landscape and the types of economy have not been altered to present. Albeit they do not sustain human habitation, the deterioration of their enviroment is owing to human intervention. The Oinousses island complex (consisting of three major islands: Sapientza, Schiza and Agia Mariani) retain a well-preserved and undisturbed natural environment as well as a rich wild life biodiversity. The main aim of the current research is to provide an effective tool which will serve the sustainable counterbalance development in remote insular areas around Greece. This will be achieved by using an enviromental assessment methodology (Leopold Matrix) that will contribute to the evaluation of the emergent environmental impacts. The monitoring and management of these islands in the future will be based on the conservation of their insular features (as a basic principle of sustainability) and the soft actions that must be adopted with respect to their natural environment.

This paper reviews the research status of digital image watermarking in the past decade. Considering there are too many publications about the digital image watermarking, we summarize main approaches and point out interesting parts of the researches. Multimedia watermarking technology offers advanced right away throughout the last several years. An electronic watermark is actually facts that are certainly imperceptibly and robustly inserted in the number data in ways that the idea is not taken off. Some sort of watermark commonly consists of information about the foundation, status, or perhaps receiver on the number data. In this review paper, certain requirements and apps intended for watermarking are usually reviewed. Purposes consist of copyright defense, data monitoring, and data pursuing. The fundamental concepts involving watermarking techniques are usually given and highlighted along with offered watermarking options for pictures, movie, audio tracks, text message files, along with advertising. Robustness and safety measures elements are usually mentioned in greater detail. Finally, several remarks are created around the cutting edge and possible potential trends inside watermarking technology.
