Research on Detecting Tris-(2,3-dibromopropyl)-Phosphate in Textiles with the HPLC/DAD Method

A detecting method for toxic flame retardant finishing agent tris-(2,3-dibromopropyl) -phosphate (TRIS for short) in textiles was studied. In the method, an acetonitrile ultrasound-assisted extraction process was included in sample pre-treatment, and HPLC/DAD was used in the separation and identification of extractives. After that, the conditions of pre-treatment and chromatograph were optimized. The results showed that the limit of detection (LOD) by this method (S/N10) is 1.0 mg/kg, its recovery ranged from 78.1% to 98.4%, and RSD of the precision test is 3.2%, of which all met the requirements for routine testing.

Hibiscus sabdariffa (Roselle) is in high demand worldwide due to its beneficial health properties owing to the polyphenols content, mainly in the flower calyx. The objective of this study was to find the best conditions (time and liquid: solid ratio) to extract polyphenols from Roselle using Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE) (40 kHz, 180 W), with ethanol how solvent; as well as determine the yield of phenols, anthocyanin, flavonoids, tannins, antioxidant activity (DPPH) and antigenotoxic effect (comet assay). A traditional solid-liquid extraction was applied as a reference. Extraction times of 40 and 60 min resulted in the highest polyphenols (13.019 mg GAE/g dry weight (dw)), flavonoids (4.981 CE/g dw), anthocyanins (1.855 mg Cya3GE/g dw), and tannins (0.745 CE/g dw) recoveries and an antioxidant activity (DPPH) of 74.58%. Extracts from white calyces contained similar amounts of phenols and flavonoids, but very little condensed tannins (0.049 CE/g dw) and practically no anthocyanins. Extracts from red and white calyces, showed antigenotoxic activity and repaired capacity of damage caused by mutagens in human lymphocytes.

Bael fruit is an abundant source of bioactive compounds that have importance in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The process of extraction of the bael fruit juice produced a higher percentage of bael fruit pulp waste (BFPW) (37.33 %), which was recycled for the extraction of bioactive compounds. Thus the bioactive compounds like polyphenols, flavonoids, and carotenoids were extracted from BFPW by using the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) technique. The modeling and optimization of the extraction process were carried out by using the experimental design of response surface methodology (RSM). The ethanol concentration of 51.22 %, ultrasound amplitude of 51.45 %, and ultrasound treatment time of 6.11 minutes were obtained to be an RSM optimized values of extraction process variables. The lower values of root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) and higher values of coefficient of determination (R2) indicated admissibility and acceptability of RSM. This extraction process of bioactive compounds has the potential to implement it on an industrial scale for the formulation of food additives and medicines.

Vitamin K1 is one of the important hydrophobic vitamins in fat-containing foods. Traditionally, lipase is employed in the determination of vitamin K1 to remove the lipids, which makes the detection complex, time-consuming, and insensitive. In this study, the determination of vitamin K1 in fat-containing foods was developed based on ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), solid-phase extraction (SPE) combined with liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The optimal conditions for extraction of vitamin K1 were material–liquid ratio of 1:70 (g/mL), extraction temperature of 50 °C, extraction power of 700 W, extraction time of 50 min, material-wash fluid ratio of 1:60 (g/mL), and 8 mL of hexane/anhydrous ether (97:3, v/v) as the elution solvent. Then, vitamin K1 was analyzed on a ZORBAX SB-C18 column (50 mm × 2.1 mm, 1.8 μm) by gradient elution with water (0.01% formic acid) and methanol (0.01 formic acid + 2.5 mmol/L ammonium formate) as the mobile phase. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 0.05 and 0.16 μg/kg, respectively. Calibration curve was linear over the range of 10–500 ng/mL (R2 > 0.9988). The recoveries at three spiked levels were between 80.9% and 119.1%. The validation and application indicated that the proposed method was simple and sensitive in determination of vitamin K1 in fat-containing foods.

The ‘Bravo de Esmolfe’ apple (BE) is rich in antioxidants and represents one of the most important traditional cultivars in Portugal. A large amount of non-compliant BE, with no market value, it is generated every year. Thus, an effort to find value-added solutions is of utmost importance. For the first time, green extraction (microwave-assisted-extraction (MAE) and ultrasound-assisted-extraction (UAE)) were compared against conventional extraction (with (CET) and without temperature (CE)) to select the most efficient process to produce a natural antioxidant extract from non-compliant BE. The results showed that MAE and CET are good methodologies for developing a BE antioxidant extract. However, MAE is more sustainable than CET, requiring less time to reach high temperatures. The MAE-extract showed great antioxidant activity (14.80 ± 0.70 mg TE/g DE by ORAC, 3.92 ± 0.25 mg AAE/g DE by ABTS, and 5.11 ± 0.13 mg TE/g DE by DPPH). This extract revealed high amount of chlorogenic acid (0.48 ± 0.07 mg/g DE), (-)-epicatechin (0.30 ± 0.02 mg/g DE) and phloridzin (0.13 ± 0.01 mg/g DE). This study shows that non-compliant BE is a useful source of antioxidants, being a sustainable way for the recovery of value-added compounds from the rejected fruit in line with sustainable and circular bioeconomy principles.

A hard cap espresso machine was employed for the extraction of polyphenolic compounds from food samples as dry legumes and pulses. 100 mg of ground dry sample was mixed with a dispersing agent and placed in a refillable stainless steel capsule with a borosilicate filter. A complete polyphenol extraction was achieved by using 150 mL ethanol 50 % (v/v) in water and determined by Folin-Ciocalteu spectrophotometric method. The method provided a limit of detection of 0.4 mg g<sup>-1</sup>. The whole extraction procedure was achieved in less than one minute using the mild extraction conditions of 72°C and 19 bars given by the domestic machine. Fifteen varieties of food samples (3 lentils, 6 beans, 5 chickpeas, and 1 sorghum) were purchased in Spanish and Tunisian markets and analyzed by the proposed procedure. Obtained results were compared with those found by a reference extraction method based on ultrasound-assisted extraction, being statistically comparable. The content of polyphenolic compounds in the analyzed commercial samples varied from 4.6 to 5.5 mg g<sup>-1</sup> for lentils, from 3.4 to 5.8 mg g<sup>-1</sup> for beans, from 2.2 to 3.5 mg g<sup>-1</sup> for chickpeas, and 3.0 mg g<sup>-1</sup> for sorghum.
