Design reliability is analyzed for the interference fits of the railway wagon wheelset with 30 ton axle weigh. Aim focus on eliminating fretting fatigue damage of the wheelset. An extreme wheelset loads set is deduced by which can yields the thermal mechanical loads on the wheel same to the code AAR S 660. Integrated wheelset model of finite element method is applied to calculate the stresses on the fits to consider the physical fit relationship of wheelset, in which the rail pieces, wheels, axle, bearings, and adapters are fitted together by contact phases. It is revealed that the fits are all in the press stress states for the original design. But the stresses seem smaller than the least reasonable value for the reliable fits between wheels-axle. An improvement suggestion is provided to rise the fit scale to 0.23 mm equal to 0.01 percentage of the wheel-hub hole diameter. Calculation results verify that the press stresses have been controlled in the reasonable range.

In this paper, the flow, heat transfer and stress during solidification process of the machine tool bed weighed about 2.5ton that has been optimized by structural topologymethod, was calculated with ProCAST software, and the causes of the crack forming in the casting of the machine tool bed was analysed. According to the calculation results, the structural design of the local part where cracks tends to form has been improved, and the heat transfer and the stress are calculated again. By comparing the temperature field with filling of molten cast iron and without filling, it has been found that there was little effect of filling on the results of temperature distribution of the cast, therefore the effect of filling can be ignored in the following temperature field calculation to save computation time. The model has been simplified in the stress field calculation with considering the complexity of the machine tool bed and the cost of computation. Then, the merits and demerits of the original design and the improved design are compared and analyzed depending on the calculated temperature and stress results. It is suggested that the improved one could get a more uniform temperature distribution and then the trend of the crack occurring can be greatly reduced. These results could provide a guide for the actual casting production, achieving the scientific control of the production of castings, ensuring the quality of the castings.

Based on a loading-deformation relationship of bearing elements and the coordination of displacement between bearings in the rotor system, a model for calculating the additional axial force of angular-contact ball bearings in a single-rotor system is established. Nonlinear equations of this model are solved through the Rapid Descent method and Newton-Raphson method. The simulation results which are based on Gupta’s example verify that both the model and solving methods in this paper are reliable. A pair of 276927NK1W1(H) angular-contact ball bearings in symmetry in the single-rotor system is used as the example, calculation results of the additional axial force of bearings from the model in this paper and from the ISO method are compared and the influence of bearing geometry parameters and working conditions on the additional axial force is further studied. This model and its conclusions could provide the basic data and reference for analyzing the carrying ability and dynamic properties of rolling bearings.

Chapter Six provides an extended examination of the newspaper reporting of the treason trial of Obafemi Awolowo, the second major treason trial after independence. How the Nigerian press covered the trial illuminates the ways in which legal process as a mode of nation formation was woven into the daily lives of newspaper readers. Moreover, attending to that press coverage illustrates the importance of narrative and literary form in the process of national self-construction. The chapter begins by outlining the relationship of politics and the press in Nigeria before looking at the defining features of the trial itself. The chapter examines how the trial was presented in the press and the readerly engagement that the press sought to foster. The chapter concludes by reflecting on the larger significance of the trial and its coverage in the media at the dawn of Nigeria’s first Republic.

Objective of the work: develop a model for calculation of plate exit thickness. This model is supposed to improve process reliability in obtaining specified thickness with +/- 0.5 mm tolerance. The work identifies major influences on obtaining specified thickness and relationship of their effects. Based on derived relationships, the work develops rolling force calculation model with the following inputs: alloy grade, feedstock temperature, feedstock entry and exit gage, feedstock width, rotational speed of the rolls. Mill stand characteristics, like mill stiffness, backlash, work roll behavior, were studied in relation to force and temperature. The resulting model allows to predict the value of work roll gap increase during rolling. The model was validated in production environment and demonstrated high confidence level of calculation results.

The literature concerned with communications in American magazines during the last quarter of 1952 was overwhelmingly dominated by the subject of the relationship of radio and the press to the presidential campaign. While the election itself was resolved definitely in favor of Eisenhower, it became more and more evident that press institutions themselves in the United States may soon face a virtual decision at the bar of public opinion in regard to their ideal role in national life. Marking the main skirmish line for the three months in question was the phrase “one-party press” which bounded from a political speech by defeated-candidate Stevenson in early September into almost every written or spoken discussion of the press since that time. Means of disproving or proving this characterization of U. S. newspapers has been the main topic of discussion at many conventions and conferences of such diversified groups as publishers, editors, union leaders, educators, congressmen, women's clubs and politicians as evidenced by following bibliography entries. Also numerous have been outright attempts at proof and disclaimer by various speakers and writers. Also of note during the quarter were the number of articles by pollsters defining their exact position in regard to pre-election opinion figures. Most managed to be both safe and sorry, since the growing corps of polling critics contributed a great number of articles following the election pointing out ignored evidence on Eisenhower's strength with great statistical accuracy.

Successful intercarpal arthrodesis requires a stable fusion with maintenance of correct alignment and spatial relationship of the carpus. The technique described utilizes a series of tube saws to fashion the arthrodesis bed and then insert a sized iliac crest dowel bone graft with a tight interference fit. This technique has been used in 24 patients over a two-year period in both medial and lateral column intercarpal fusions. All wrists had fused by the tenth post-operative month. The technique is precise, reproducible and technically simple with a high fusion rate and minimal donor site morbidity.

Tolerance with upper deviation less than lower deviation is defined as virtual tolerance; the dimension between two extreme values required with tolerance (virtual tolerance) is expressed by a set. The changed characteristics of the set range when the tolerance value is continuously reduced from positive to negative are explored. The nature of virtual tolerance is that the absolute value of virtual tolerance is the error compensation amount, and the dimension between two extreme values is the error compensation range. On the basis of the concept of positive and negative number, the theory of dimensional homogeneity, the existing conditions of the general formula of the dimensional chain, the accuracy of the calculation results of tolerance, and so on, the concept of virtual tolerance and its relationship of unity of opposites with tolerance are proposed. Based on the concept of virtual tolerance, analysis and calculation processes of various assembly dimensional chains are unified, and general formulation of calculating the range of false waste is established, and the method of determining the range of false waste by using probabilistic method in machining process is deduced.

A micro-fracture model is presented to investigate mechanics properties of porous media such as cement paste on basis of micromechanics theory and fracture theory. Relationships between mechanics properties of porous media and the parameters of pores such as shape, size, and porosity are analysed by this model. Calculation results show that, to a hypothetic porous media with same porosity, the ultimate strength and elastic properties are reduced with an increase of average pore diameter. Nano-scale pores have little effect on the ultimate strength of this porous media while the micron-scale pores have great effect on it. The stress-strain relationship of this porous media with the micron-scaled pores is nonlinear obviously. The results also show that the ultimate strength and elastic properties of the porous media are reduced with an increase of the porosity and shape parameter. Mechanics properties of a cement paste with water cement ratio of 0.5 are tested. The calculation results from the model are in agreement with the experimental results.

According to researching the spin traveling wave pump, the relationship of the characteristics of magnetic fluid and the press is investigated under the spin magnetic field by the theory method. The relationship of moving, magnetic field and press is investigated by the decoupled computation between the magnetic field and force. The method is scientificity and rationality by the testing. The distributing shape of magnetic fluid in the pump is affected by the adding magnetic field under the spin magnetic field when the magnetic fluid is filled in the pump. At the same time, the adding magnetic field is affected by magnetic particles of magnetic fluid. The magnetic fluid can be moved by the effect of the adding magnetic field in the pump. The flux of magnetic fluid increases with the magnetic field.

The purpose of this article is to examine the sport–celebrity relationship of singer–actress Jessica Simpson and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. This qualitative analysis of 100 magazine and 100 newspaper articles that coincided with the first publicized notion of the “Jessica [Simpson] Jinx” reveals the prevailing dominant ideologies of patriarchal structures, traditional gender roles, hegemonic masculinity, and deviance. This study uncovers typologies that mirror the archetypal sporting partnership, for example, Simpson’s feminine position as a “supporter” and her function as an “antagonist” (e.g., the femme fatale, Yoko Ono) and Romo’s position as a hegemonic male (the new-laddist, maverick sporting star) and victim. Through developing these themes, the researchers illustrate the concepts of villainization and victimization in the mass media, where Simpson was portrayed unfavorably. Romo, conversely, was portrayed favorably in the press, suggesting the need to maintain the patriarchal order while restraining female dominance.
