Road markings should always be visible, readable and effective. Their performance is related to the quality of materials, their application and textural characteristics of the road pavement. The evolution of properties (visibility, skid resistance, color and durability) also depends on the product, its resistance to traffic abrasion, the application technique and adhesion between coating and substrate. This paper analyzes the results of a wide campaign of tests (over more than 4,000 km of lines) on road marking performances, with the purpose of evaluating a model for design and maintenance management. Mainly post-sprayed coatings are investigated with regard to quality controls, their frequency and protocols, according to the standards in force.

This paper evaluates experimental variables for virtual road safety audits (VRSAs) through practical experiments to promote sustainable road safety. VRSAs perform road safety audits using driving simulators (DSs), and all objects in the road environment cannot be experimental variables because of realistic constraints. Therefore, the study evaluates the likelihood of recommendation of VRSA experimental variables by comparing DSs experiments and field reviews to secure sustainable road safety conditions. The net promoter score results evaluated “Tunnel”, “Bridge”, “Underpass”, “Footbridge”, “Traffic island”, “Sign”, “Lane”, “Road marking”, “Traffic light”, “Median barrier”, “Road furniture”, and “Traffic condition” as recommended variables. On the contrary, the “Road pavement”, “Drainage”, “Lighting”, “Vehicle”, “Pedestrian”, “Bicycle”, “Accident”, and “Hazard event” variables were not recommended. The study can be used for decision making in VRSA scenario development as an initial effort to evaluate its experimental variables.

This study was set out to analyze and investigate the damaged surface course of a newly-constructed road pavement within the two years after its completion. Because the idea of sustainable public infrastructure in Taiwan has recently encouraged the use of renewable materials in the design phase, parts of this roads pavement structure is composed of recycled asphalt concrete, renewable agents, disposed construction surplus and the like. Considering the complex relationship between the damaged condition of the road pavement and factors such as its load repetitions, its design, its construction process and management, and road management, this study employed an intelligent vehicle for pavement survey, Benkelman Beam method, GeoGauge, and Ground Penetrating Radar to examine the roads pavement structure. After cross-analyzing the results from the non-destructive testing, certain parts of the road and the possibly-damaged structure of the pavement were sampled for material testing. The results from the material testing indicated that the related mechanical parameters of the road sections sampled by the non-destructive testing were significantly lower than the normal standards. Moreover, the results from the GPR analysis revealed that the water content of the subgrade of the severely-damaged road sections was high. The low loading capacity of the pavement structure was mainly due to the high groundwater water level in the surrounding area and the penetration of the rain into the cracks of the surface course. This study proposes that nondestructive testing can facilitate sampling sections for material testing to better ensure the quality of the construction although random sampling is commonly seen in the standard material testing for acceptance of completed work. In addition, the study suggests that non-destructive testing can be one requirement for the acceptance of completed work in pavement projects with renewable materials to better evaluate the quality of the pavement after its construction.

Horizontal road marking along with road signs is an essential factor that ensures road safety. The quality of road markings largely depends on the quality of the application. In today’s, for road marking are used road marking machines. They are complex high-performance automated units requiring highly professional operators. Stink to classify for the way of marking, design of the running gear, base machine, type of drive, productivity and the most important signs. The article describes the principles of the operation of marking machines and the main technical characteristics of machines from leading manufacturers: GRACO, SТiM, Hofmann. When applying road marking, special attention should be paid to the use of certified materials and certified equipment. The results of measuring the geometric and lighting indicators of horizontal road marking are presented. During certification, marking is applied with a marking machine. During the application, the thickness of the liquid paint layer is determined by a calibrated comb. To control the lighting technical characteristics of road marking – whiteness, retroreflectivity (Rl) and brightness (Qd) coefficients, a ZRM 1021 reflectometer and a ZRM 1013 retroreflectometer are used. Geometric indicators were measured with a tape measure. The table of certification results of the Line Lazer IV 3900 machine is shown. Similar indicators were obtained during certification of the machines of Hofmann, Combizet Gruen, RoadLazer, etc. Deviations from the road marking indicators declared by the manufacturer are not observed for 3 years. All marking performed by verified marking machines meets the requirements of current regulations. Keywords: certification of machines, durability of marking, retroreflectivity, accuracy of application, brightness.

The article reviews the stability of an automobile on the road pavement with ruts. The problems of road safety depend on many factors. One of those is the quality of the road surface. Big heavy lorries deform the road surface causing ruts especially in the first line of the road. The article analyzes the influence of the geometry of ruts on the stability of the automobile. A mathematical model of a 3D automobile and the interaction between wheels and the road surface and the geometry of the road surface are presented. The mathematical criterion of the stability of the moving automobile on the road surface with ruts is laid down. The results of mathematical simulation and the criterion of the stability of the moving automobile (60 km/h) on the road surface depending on the depth of ruts are introduced.

Quality does not mean compliance with a checklist of standards but rather “fitness for use.” Compliance with a checklist of standards will only assure quality if the standards specifically address the intended use of the final results. In the design of a quality assurance program, the emphasis is upon quality controls and monitoring schedules for those aspects of the study that significantly alter the variability of the final results and alter the variability to the extent that the final results are no longer useful. Therefore, the principal researcher in conjunction with the quality assurance staff contribute to the quality of a study by applying combined expertise in the design of specific reference standards that both address the fitness for use criterion and the more comprehensive government standards.

Introduction. The actuality of the research is emphasized in the Strategy of proclaiming the desire for zero mortality on the country’s roads. Increasing the functional durability (the service life period) of horizontal road markings is an effective and cheap way to organize the movement of vehicles and pedestrians, which could reduce the number of accidents by 15-30%.Methods. The detailed factor analysis, influenced on the functional durability of the horizontal road markings and on the durability forecasting methods, is made by the authors.Results. The authors have established the main factors determining the functional durability of the horizontal road marking. They are divided into five groups: weather-climatic; mechanical; properties of the marking material; technological; properties of the road pavement. Moreover, the article presents a critical analysis of the existing methods of forecasting the functional durability of horizontal marking. In foreign publications on the issue under consideration there is no work on the prediction of the functional durability of horizontal marking by creating complex mathematical models. Most foreign and Russian models are based on empirical dependences. However, these methods and models do not take into account a number of important factors, such as the degree of roughness and abrasion of stone materials, their embedding in asphalt concrete coating, etc.Disscussion and conclusion. The authors came to the conclusion that attempts to create a single reliable mathematical model that takes into account more than 40 factors couldn’t be realistic. Therefore, there is a task of developing a number of models that allow to have greater extent that take into account the properties of the road surface, the location and variety of marking lines and predict the functional durability of horizontal road markings for different types of road pavement more reliably.

The quality of the paved road depends not only on the decisions of the road designer and the work carried out but also on the materials used. Most of the aggregates used are imported from other countries. However, the usage of domestic materials reduces the cost of the road pavement and the use of aggregates produced by a special production technology in Lithuania, i.e., dolomite aggregates instead of granite aggregates. Experimental studies were carried out on the skid resistance of the road surface. It was found that the coefficient of skid resistance met the requirements for surface dressing with dolomite aggregate, and the results were analysed with 95% probability. This coefficient partially met the requirements for asphalt concrete, while it did not meet the requirements at all for stone mastic asphalt. The surface roughness, however, met the requirements for road sections where granite aggregates were used instead of dolomite in mixes of surface dressing and asphalt concrete. The analysis was carried out considering the volume of traffic and the service life of the individual road sections. It was determined that it was suitable for a 5-year guarantee period to perform the surface dressing, wearing course of asphalt concrete and stone mastic asphalt with dolomite aggregate where part of heavy vehicles is less than 20% of traffic flow. The use of granite aggregates was justified only in the road where heavy vehicles dominated.

Abstract One of the most significant factors for a good transportation system is the quality of the road pavement. As a result, many steps have been made to address the concerns of moisture damage to roadways, including increasing pavement quality and structural design approaches. In the last few years, there has been an increase in the attention of respective engineers to enhance the asphalt performance and provides various types of modifiers and substituting the virgin of asphaltic materials with recyclable products, to attain sustainable while reducing the price of modified pavement mixture. This article discusses the performance of modified asphalt mixes and the most commonly used recycled product, crumbs rubber, which is used as a modifier in asphaltic mixes at various contents (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, and 15% by asphalt weight), and investigates the impact of the addition rubber particles on a critical characteristic of asphalt mixtures, particularly regarding their resistance to damage of moisture. The results showed that modification of asphalt binder with CR increased Marshall’s Stability, and the inclusion of 10% of CR recorded the highest increment, increasing by 30.25%. According to increased TSR and IRS, the addition of CR improved the asphalt mixture’s moisture resistance. The addition of 7.5 % of CR resulted in the largest values of TSR and IRS, increasing by 8.8% and 12.9% respectively. Additionally, this study aims at understanding the benefits and drawbacks of recycling rubber tires and to build a concept for effectively incorporating waste materials into road pavement.

Skid resistance is a significant feature that provides consistent traffic safety management for road pavements. An appropriate level of Skid resistance describes the contribution that the pavement surface makes to tire/road friction, and the surface of the road pavement can reduce vehicle operation cost, traffic accidents, and fatalities, particularly in wet conditions. Wet conditions decrease the level of the skid resistance (pavement friction), and this may lead to serious struggles related to driving on the road pavement (e.g., skidding or hydroplaning), which contributes to higher crash rates. The knowledge of skid resistance is essential to ensure reliable traffic management in transportation systems. Thus, a suitable methodology of skid resistance measurement and the understanding of the characterization of the road pavement are key to allow safe driving conditions. This paper presents a critical review on the current state of the art of the research conducted on skid resistance measurement techniques, taking into account field-based and laboratory-based methodologies, and novel road sensors with regard to various practices of skid resistance, factors influencing the skid resistance, the concept of the minimum skid resistance and thresholds. In conclusion, new trends that are relevant to data collection approaches and innovative procedures to further describe the data treatment are discussed to achieve better understanding, more accurate data interoperability, and proper measurement of skid resistance.
