For the limitations of the existing hydraulic test bench for experimenting with multi-species of hydraulic components, the additional cartridge valve circuit and multi-way directional valve circuit were designed. The AMESim simulation models of the hydraulic test benchs basic hydraulic circuits were established and simulated. Then the simulation results were compared with the experimental data to get some principles of simulation modeling and optimize the models. These principles were used to simulate the additional hydraulic circuits. Through analysis of the simulation results, theory supports were provided to the optimal design of hydraulic test bench. In this way, the existing hydraulic test bench can be fully used and the suitable components were selected, reducing the waste of resources. Besides, the simulation models can be used as part of the virtual hydraulic teaching.

This paper deals with the simulation of hydraulic gear machines, focusing on the validation of simulation models and on the comparison between numerical results and experimental data, concerning both steady and unsteady conditions. First authors give a brief overview on the simulation tool HYGESim, which has been presented and discussed in several previous papers. Afterwards, the attention shifts on the analysis of the simulation results for the case of a stock gear pump. Regarding steady state characteristics, the paper shows how HYGESim is able to accurately reproduce the operation of the analyzed pump, in terms of flow, pressures and efficiency maps. Regarding unsteady simulations, namely the delivery pressure ripple, the paper highlights the significant effort done by the authors in order to achieve experimental data clear and suitable for the comparison with simulation results. In fact, the peculiarities of common measuring systems (in particular of the load apparatus and the sampling methods) are often difficult to reproduce numerically: frequently different acceptable assumptions in the numerical model lead to remarkable discrepancies in simulated results. For this purpose, the authors developed a measuring device mainly focused on the easy reproducibility in the simulation environment. Furthermore, an original technique for processing unsteady data (pressure and flow ripples) is proposed, allowing to achieve comparable data indifferently of the adopted sampling method and of the data origin (experimental or numerical). In the final part of the paper, pressure ripple simulations and test results (obtained with the described measuring system and analyzed with the described technique) are presented and compared.

Construction site operations are very complex, and they involve complicated relationships among numerous tasks, factors, obstacles, risks, and uncertainties, or triggering situations that affect productivity. To improve the performance of construction operations, one needs to understand the impact these triggering situations have on productivity. The paper discusses a recently developed technique, called situation-based simulation modeling, that is used to model the triggering situations in construction to predict productivity. This tool can model the cause-and-effect relationships among various triggering situations, which previous construction models have ignored. Construction operations that were directly observed and recorded for more than 3500 person-hours served as the data source for the development of the model. The simulation results are not only able to accurately predict productivity relative to the actual productivity observed at the site, but also provide the basis for recommendations to mitigate problematic situations to improve productivity.Key words: construction, productivity, modeling, simulation, situation-modeling.

To study the characteristics of the coupling vibration between a maglev vehicle and its track beam system and to improve the performance of the levitation system, a new type of vibration test bench was developed. Take a single maglev frame as the study object; simulation of the coupling vibration of the maglev vehicle, levitation system, and track beam were achieved. In addition, all types of real track irregularity excitations can be simulated using hydraulic actuators of the test bench. To expand the research scope, a simulation model was developed that can conduct the simulation research synergistically with the test bench. Based on a dynamics model of the test bench, the dynamics simulation method determined the influence on the levitation control performance of three factors: the track beam support stiffness, the track beam mass, and the track irregularity. The vibration resonance phenomenon of the vehicle/track system was reproduced by the dynamics simulation, and a portion of the simulation results were validated by the test results. By combining the test bench and the dynamics model, experiments can be guided by the simulation results, and the experimental results can validate the dynamics simulation results.

Simulation modeling of phytophagans’ influence on the yield of seed fruit crops, in particular apple trees, was carried out. By means of simulation models the importance of phytophagans’ influence at different stages of the vegetation period and the period of fruit ripening was revealed. The software package Matlab was used to build simulation models. As a result, simulation models with nonlinear characteristics were obtained, which maximally reflected the studied processes. The developed models imitate the process of phytophagans’ development. Generation change of pests and all stages of their development are simulated. Their respective numbers are recorded at each stage for all generations. The development process at each stage is modeled by separate subsystems of the simulation model. To simulate the development of one generation of pests, these subsystems are connected by external links. In addition, part of the relationships provides a simulation of generational change. There are a number of input parameters that allow to configure the simulation of the process of changing generations, taking into account the peculiarities of the development of various phytophagans.

AbstractIn the paper, a fractional-order RLC circuit is presented. The circuit is realized by using a fractional-order capacitor. This is realized by using carbon black dispersed in a polymeric matrix. Simulation results are compared with the experimental data, confirming the suitability of applying this new device in the circuital implementation of fractional-order systems.

A finite element model is proposed to investigate the effect of thickness differential on Limiting Dome Height (LDH) testing of aluminum tailor-welded blanks. The numerical model is validated via comparison of the equivalent plastic strain and displacement distribution between the simulation results and the experimental data. The normalized equivalent plastic strain and normalized LDH values are proposed as a means of quantifying the influence of thickness differential for a variety of different ratios. Increasing thickness differential was found to decrease the normalized equivalent plastic strain and normalized LDH values, this providing an evaluation of blank formability.

Craps is a simple dice game that is popular in casinos around the world. While the rules for Craps, and its mathematical analysis, are reasonably straightforward, this paper instead focuses on the best ways to cheat at Craps, by using loaded (biased) dice. We use both analytical modeling and simulation modeling to study this intriguing dice game. Our modeling results show that biasing a die away from the value 1 or towards the value 5 lead to the best (and least detectable) cheating strategies, and that modest bias on two loaded dice can increase the winning probability above 50%. Our Monte Carlo simulation results provide validation for our analytical model, and also facilitate the quantitative evaluation of other scenarios, such as heterogeneous or correlated dice.

Silicon wafers are the most widely used substrates for fabricating integrated circuits. A sequence of processes is needed to turn a silicon ingot into silicon wafers. One of the processes is flattening by lapping or by grinding to achieve a high degree of flatness and parallelism of the wafer [1, 2, 3]. Lapping can effectively remove or reduce the waviness induced by preceding operations [2, 4]. The main aim of this paper is to compare the simulation results with lapping experimental data obtained from the Polish producer of silicon wafers, the company Cemat Silicon from Warsaw (www.cematsil.com). Proposed model is going to be implemented by this company for the tool wear prediction. Proposed model can be applied for lapping or grinding with single or double-disc lapping kinematics [5, 6, 7]. Geometrical and kinematical relations with the simulations are presented in the work. Generated results for given workpiece diameter and for different kinematical parameters are studied using models programmed in the Matlab environment.
